Gangsters Become Humans

Evan Hunter’s short story The Last Spin is a cold summary about gang wars. The plot begins when two men from different gangs meet each other. The two men Danny and Tigo are told to settle the gangs´ relations because of last night’s shootings. The cruel fact is that Danny and Tigo need to play Russian roulette until the end.

First they both are very tough guys and they see each other only as enemies. The Russian roulette starts with only one cartridge in the revolver’s cylinder. Odds are five-to-one. Gangsters are lucky, again and again they target the weapon towards their own heads and pull the trigger coldbloodedly. Without noticing it themselves Danny and Tigo begin talking. The men realize how much they have in common. They speak about their girlfriends, families, and dream about joining the army one day. Gangsters from different gangs decide to be friends. They even notice that the real conflict between the two gangs concerns the gang leaders’ greed of power, it’s not between them. But the game goes on and they must add another cartridge inside the cylinder. Quitting is not an option.

Both of the men are young because they can’t join the army without their parents permission. They are also newcomers in their gangs. In my opinion they are insecure and vulnerable young men trying to find approval and social cohesion from their gangs. As the story goes forward Danny and Tigo slowly take off their masks of tough guys and the real humanity increases in these two ordinary fellows.

Though The Last Spin is only a short story it ties its reader firmly in his or hers seat. Evan Hunter uses colloquial language in the men’s dialogue. It has its own influence on building the atmosphere. Actually without slang language the feeling would be far from what it should be. The story forces the reader to think about chains set up by the surrounding community. Can you be what you want to be or are you just playing a role? Or how hard is it to take off the mask?

Black hawk down

Black hawk down were made in 2001 in United States of America. The film won Oscars from best editing, best sound and were nominated for best director and cinematography. Black hawk down is a story of American elite strike teams mission to release small city from withering warlords grip. Sounds Like a basic American super soldier movie right? However it´s different from others because it´s based on actual event.

The battle of Mogadishu happened between October 3, 1993 and October 4, 1993. The battle of Mogadishu were joint ops mission witch goal were to capture Somali warlord  Mohamed Farrah Aid-id and the movie focuses on rescuing party for crew of two shot down Black Hawk helicopter. A lot director didn’t  change the code film is still a triumph for American ”saviors”.

Storyline is still old same first 30 minutes is spend to watch bald people speaking meaningless fuzz and showing how evil hostile is. When the battle begins, it´s same old story: American propaganda: hundreds of Somali militia are shooting group of American soldiers on a ground without any effect. However after couple minutes Americans are forced on defence still they seem to get over whit it without a scratch. The rest of the film is just meaningless stuffing when rescuing party is trying to get to crash side. however in that stuffing the secret of success is hidden, because that’s where the tide changes and Americans are starting to drop down, which brings the movie more realistic. of course Americans are not going to lose but in this movie they don’t get any miracle power but air support which is much more acceptable. Another funny fact is that everything else than American things seem to blow up Movie doesn’t show much about the citizen’s view or even the city it’s purely about soldiers.

Personally I think that movie were made to defence USA:s massacres and to get more soldiers to world. During the raid more than 1000 Somali got killed by ALL forces and 19 American were killed.

The movie is not to be recommended for those who require a deeper meaning or something stimulating. but those who enjoy action and all that other stuff its very enjoyable.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a American drama film directed by Richard Brooks. The movie was released in 1958 and it’s starred by Elizabeth Taylor (as Margaret ”Maggie”), Paul Newman (as Brick) and Burl Ives (as Harvey ”Big Daddy”).

The film starts when a drunken Brick Pollit brakes his leg by leaping hurdles on a trackfield, dreaming of his glory days in high school sports. He is an ex-football player, who had later switched the ball to alcohol and who’s marriage with gorgeous Maggie is cold and indifferent from his case. Big Daddy is dying for cancer, although he doesn’t know that yet himself. He arrives home from the hospital just in time for his 65th birthday and his both sons, Brick and Garson, with their families had gathered together to celebrate this big day. Everybody knows about Big Daddy’s dying but they wants him to remain happy, so nobody tells the truth to him. But in the evening of his birthday he finds out the real side of his illness. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a great story of self-loathing, growing, falsehood and living in it and ofcourse love.

Characters are all very professional. Margaret’s ”The Cat” loneliness and Brick’s refusal to make her his desire, has made her hard, nervous, and bitchy. Brick is the favorite son and mourned lover. Brick embodies an almost archetypal masculinity. At the same time, the Brick before us is also an obviously broken man because of his repressed homosexual desire for his dead friend Skipper. Big Daddy is Brick’s father a large, brash, and vulgar plantation millionaire who believes he has returned from the grave, though he is very ill. Deep in his heart, he’s still a loving old man despite the brash appearance.

I have watched this film about five times and I never get bored to it. Film represent old-fashioned but wealthy life of a big family, with it’s sorrow, hate and love. I recommend this film to all who has an interest in old classic dramafilms.

Die Hard 4.0

Die Hard 4.0

The movie I chose was Die Hard 4.0, also known as “Live Free or Die Hard”. It was released in 2007 and it still remains as the latest and the most profit made movie of the Die Hard film franchise. USA premier was at 22nd of June and Finland’s premier 5 days later, 27th . Genre of the movie is action. The stars of the movie are Bruce Willis as John McClane, the ‘hero’ of the movie, Timothy Olyphant as Thomas Gabriel, the villain of the movie. Other important actors are; Justin Long and Maggie Q. Len Wiseman was in charge of directing the movie.

For the 4th time Bruce Willis makes a incredible role as John McClane, ruthless detective of NYPD who does not show any mercy to bad guys. Bruce Willis fits well to his role. He gives the role the touch which makes John McClane charismatic and outstanding. And the proof of Willis’s amazing performance; Bruce Willis won the ‘National Movie Awards for the best performance by a Male’ for his magnificent role in Die Hard 4.0. Timothy Olyphant instead doesn’t fit to his role as well as Willis does. He just doesn’t seem to be unrefined and ruthless as terrorists are used to be seen in movies.

The plot of the movie is similar to all of the Die Hard movies – terrorists do something that they shouldn’t do and John McClane is always there for some odd reason to save the day. Yet again, NYPD cop is in wrong place at the wrong time. This time the incidents happen in Washington, DC, on 4th of the July, when group of terrorists hack in to USA´s government servers and gain access all of the services and  shut down the security and transport systems of the city and its neighbors. Chaos rules in the whole Eastern-Coast of the USA and when nothing is working McClane has to drag his friend, Matthew Farrell (Justin Long) who knows everything about computers and partners try to get the systems back online.

Overall I think the movie is successful. Still after 12 years Len Wiseman and Bruce Willis have managed to modernize the character very well and the story as well is astonishing itself. I myself really enjoyed the movie and I would recommend it to everyone who fancies the movies like this.

Bridget Jones – Elämä jatkuu

Bridget Jones:The Edge of Reason (2004) is a romantic comedy film of the life of Bridget Jones. It is a sequel to Bridget Jones’s Diary (2001), based on a novel written by Helen Fielding and directed by Beeban Kidron. Starring is Renée Zellweger as Bridget Jones, Hugh Grant as Daliel Cleaver and Colin Firth as Mark Darcy.

Bridget Jones is a chubby, awkward but very funny english tv-journal whose lovelife is a mess. In the first movie Bridget Jones’s choose polite and civilized Mark Darcy over cheating and arrogant Daniel Cleaver. Now Bridget is happily with Mark but not for long. Mark and Bridget break up because of a misunderstanding and Bridget ends up in Thailand to business trip.Of course Bridget’s ex-boyfriend Daniel is on board and as Bridgets work partner. Bridget isn’t far from falling for Daniel again until it turns out that he hasn’t changed a bit. The real problems start when Bridget is about to get back to UK. In the airport a sniffer dog finds cocaine from Bridgets suitcase. Bridget has unwittingly tried to smuggle drugs.
Bridget stays in Thailand in prison, but luckily Mark comes and saves her. Traditionaly, Mark and Daniel get into a fight for Bridget. In the end Bridget and Mark get back together and Mark proposes to Bridget.

Bridget Jones movies differ much from other romantic comedies. Bridgets charachter is easy to identify with. She hasn’t got the most amazing bodyshape nor is she rich. She cant stop smoking and she rarely acts the way that’s supposed to. She embarreses herself often but she always gets back on her feet and she also doesn’t care about what other people think of her. That is something to admire.

The most fun part is Marks and Daniels fight. It wasn’t ”cool” fighting like in most films. There was two men slapping, kicking and trying to hit each other, thats what fighting really looks like between men. The seem made the movie even more plausible. The atmosphere is very casual and comical. The film is very light to watch, it is no Schindlers list. The movie is suitable for young and older women.

The story ends and old Jacob asks for job in a circus.

CHARACTERS

Robert Pattinson as Jacob Jankowski – Sweet Polish boy who falls in love with Marlena – owner’s wife.

Reese Witherspoon as Marlene Rosenbluth – Beautiful performer, owner’s wife who falls in love with Jacob.

Christoph Waltz as August Rosenbluth – Circus’ owner, ruthless man who kills people and animals to keep the circus going.

There was plenty other people – circus’ staff, who became important to Jacob but they didn’t affect significantly on the plot.

CAMERAWORK

The filming is by Rogrigo Prieto. I liked the way the movie was shooted and I think it’s excellent.  It brought the needed feeling to otherside of the screen. Editing is by Alan Edward Bell. I think that also Bell done it well, none of the deleted scenes wouldn’t made the movie any better.

SOUNDTRACK

Film’s music is by James Newton Howard. As I said before the feeling came across the movie in filming but also in music. All of the film’s music was composed strictly for the film.

Atonement

Atonement is a Drama Mystery film made in 2007 based on a bestseller novel of the same name written by Ian McEwan. The director of the film Joe Wright has done some very successful films during the last eight years. One of his most critically acclaimed films is Pride & Prejudice in which Keira Knightley plays the main character Elizabeth Bennet.

Keira Knightley reunites with director Joe Wright in Atonement in which she plays Cecilia Tallis, the elder one of the Tallis sisters. Cecilia is very protective of her little sister Briony, although she finds her very condescending. Younger Briony Tallis is played by Saoirse Ronan and later on by Romola Garai. James McAvoy was cast as Robbie Turner after Joe Wright had tried to work with him in the past. Robbie is the son of the Tallis charlady and he used to be very good friends with the Tallis children before noticing the class difference between them. Basically Atonement is a story about how an innocent young girl tells a lie which changes the lives of her beloved ones and how she desires for atonement. The young girl, Briony, lies about her sister being raped by Robbie whom she thinks has also raped her family friend Lola. Although she is unsure about what actually happened she still carries on with her lie. After this the two lovers Robbie and Cecilia are divided by this lie and also by the II World War, which is an important theme throughout the film.

The beautiful film score is composed by Italian composer Dario Marianelli, who has worked with Joe Wright in four of his films. Dario has composed different themes for the movie, but the most important one has to be little Briony’s theme which consists mostly of sounds from an old typewriter. It fits beautifully with the tension between all of the main characters.

The Setting of the film is magnificent. A certain scene in the film caught my eye: the beautiful but at the same time destructive shot of the Dunkirk evacuation during the II World War. Also the cast of the film was full of great British actors. I fell in love especially with James McAvoy’s performance because of his pure, relatable and touching interpretation as Robbie Turner. I got interested in the film because of Keira Knightley who is an old favorite of mine, but I also found new talent like Saoirse Ronan. She is very young in the film but her age didn’t prevent her from giving an amazing performance.

All and all this film made a great impression on me. The story, the beautiful score, the acting and the beautiful cinematography make it an enjoyable but also a devastating film to watch. The story will stay with you for a long time after watching it.

Wuthering Heights (2009)

Wuthering Heights is a romantic movie and based on the novel by Emily Brontë (released 1847). This old love story has inspired many directors particularly since 1939, when the first film of the story was released. I watched version of the motion which was released in 2009 and directed by Coky Giedroyc.

Wuthering Heights is a traditional and unique romantic movie at the same time. It tells Cathy Earnshaws and Heathcliffs story. Next I’ll tell a little bit about the plot, so if you don’t want to know, stop reading! So, Cathy and Heathcliff are childhood friends, whose friendship turn into love. They can’t get married because Cathy has a highter social status than Heathcliff. Heathcliff goes away, and Cathy marries Edgar Linton. Later Heathcliff comes back, but Cathy is pregnant to Linton. Cathy gives birth to a little girl and dies herself in the birth. Cathy and Heathcliff both knew that they love each other, despite they both got married with someone else. In a sense they get each other in the end, in a sense not. Anyway, their love story is so touching, love between them is passionate and strong and it’ll never finish.

There are two actors who starring Wuthering Heights; Charlotte Riley (Cathy Earnshaw) and Tom Hardy (Heathcliff). Their roles have been criticized, but my own opinion is, that they suit quit well in their roles. I’ve red later that Riley and Hardy got engaged after the film, and you can notice their chemistry in the motion. Some scenes are a little bit too dramatic and make me smile though I must be touched. And other scenes make me cry, too.

Camerawork is usual and classic, I don’t have nothing to say about it. There aren’t any special effects in the film, too, and only a little bit music. At the beginning music creates exciting feeling and with the picture it’s nearly scary.

I can’t decide if I like the movie or not. I like it at the first sight, but when I watched it second time, I was more critical. I don’t believe I would watch the film third time. Nevertheless, the story is very beautiful, and I can recommend Wuthering Heights to everyone, who likes romantic movies. This is the motion, which worth to watch; but maybe one time is enough!

The hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (year of release is 2012), the long-awaited fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson. Movie is the first of a three-part film adaptation of the novel The Hobbit (1937, by J.R.R. Tolkien). The script is written by Jackson and his collaborators Guillermo del Toro, Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. Story’s principal character is Martin Freeman who act the part of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins. Other important actors of film are Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Ian McKellen (wizard Gandalf).
An Unexpected Journey –story set sixty years before The lord of the Rings in Middle-earth. Movie’s principal character in young Bilbo Baggins whose life change completely by the wizard Gandalf: Bilbo is convinced by the wizard Gandalf the Grey to accompany thirteen dwarves (Thorin, Balin, Dwalin, Nori, Dori, Ori, Oin, Gloin, Fili, Kili, Bifur, Bofur and Bombur) led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield. Bilbo reluctantly joins the company on their journey to the Lonely Mountain. Then starts exciting adventure, the quest to reclaim dwarves stolen home the Lonely Mountain from Smaug the dragon. To achieve their goal they have to go across middle-earth and encounter many scary threats such as orcs, trolls, enormous colossuses made by stone and, of course, Gollum.
The film looks beautiful, characters are fun and memorable, and the special effects look amazing. Bilbo is pleasant and brave little man and Dwarves are loyal to each other, really pedantic and materialistic and Gandalf old and wise wizard.
Before I see the movie I had high impressions that it would be amazing fantasy story because the legendary Lord of the Rings have also been great, famous and award-winning movies. As I watched the movie I noticed more and more of how good it really is! After seeing the movie I wished the other parts of hobbit could come out as soon as possible !
All in all, the hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has good plot setup and great action but some scenes were too long I recommend this movie to fan of fantasy or Tolkien’s novels.. If you enjoyed entering Middle Earth over a decade ago, then I highly suggest watching the Hobbit.
