I am an EFL teacher in upper secondary school. I am an Anglophile and keen on using web resources to enhance language learning.

Reflecting on the course

English 5 is now over. The students have danced their Seniors’ Ball and are enjoying the winter break.
As a teacher I am enjoying reading students’ blog entries. Calling it enjoyment sounds ironical, but I mean it. Quite sincerely, now that deadlines aren’t pushing, I can read the articles in peace and with thought, reflect on the process of producing our blog content from various points of view, and enjoy my own meditations on the whole.
The very fact that our students were writers of the same blog at the same time, while they taking course ENA5, hopefully created a shared learning environment for the four groups involved. The fact that they were blog editors/writers and not just commentators, hopefully , likewise, helped them get new insights to the blogging world.
Using web resources to write the articles was the kind of language learning that we would strongly like to see promoted. It is integrating content and language, and making language learning a natural process of acquisition while processing content (CLIL and ESL). Our teenagers are screenagers (see link to a book by Richard Watson) and are in a fair way of learning English just like that, as a by-product of living a life online in the English-medium Internet.
It’s not plain sailing though. There are still problems with the language. The main problem is grammatical accuracy. Students simply make mistakes with grammar and usage. But this problem can be addressed in their classroom studies. What’s more, we have sanguine expectations as to the reduction of language errors both through exposure to language and trough producing language oneself.
It was not plain sailing with using web resources ethically. Students had obvious difficulties to draw the line of creating their own text drawing on the resources used and between plagiarism and misuse of intellectual property. But if the process of researching and writing , together with the feedback from the teachers helped clarify this issue somewhat, valuable learning has taken place.
A link here to read more on the topic cyber ethics.

In conclusion, we, the course teachers, would like to thank the students on making this blog work!

V for Vendetta

V for Vendetta is fantasy thriller movie whitch is written by The Wachowski Brothers. It is based on a comic book with the same name. These episodes happen in a near-future dystopian society London. The mysterious man, V, is going to change the whole society system with his own way, while he is executing his private vendetta.

The main character, Evey Hammond is a young lady, whitch Mr. V saves from secret police, and after that Evey is proving V’s destruction of Old Bailey. The government says that is was only emergency demolition, but the lie comes esposed by V who talks over BTN. Evey tries to help V to escape, but same time gets herself in danger. This movie is also some kind of lovestory, but different one. The most remarkable moment in this movie, also in my mind is the line where the secret police chief Creedy asks for V that ‘’Why won’t you die?’’ and then V answers ‘’Behind this mask is more than bones and blood, behind this mask is an ism, Mr. Creedy, and isms are bulletproof.’’

And some special day, all the dead people will be seen walking with others who live.
V for Vendetta is maybe one of the best movies I have ever seen since Avatar. The meaning of this movie is very intelligent and after it I have been hoping many times that there should be person like V, who will do those same things to this world too. I really would recommend this movie to everyone. It has very good effects and thrill, so you should absolutely watch that movie!

A Shocking Accident

I read a short story called A Shocking Accident. Writer of this story is Graham Greene. It have writed on 1967. The story is tradegy about of Jerome`s being killed by a falling pig.
The story starts when protagonist has called into his housemaster`s room. In room housemaster tells to Jerome that his father has died by accident. When she tells that she looks out of the window. Jerome thinks that she is doing it becauce she is lieing but the truth is she is doing it becauce she can`t look into Jeromes eyes and say that his father is died. Reason of dieing is incredible. He died because a pig falled on his neck! Jerome doesn`t believe the reason because he has always beliewed that his father is secret agent or something like that because he travelles so much.
Jerome has big problems with telling all people that how his father died. He doesn`t want that people start laughing when they hear that incredible reason. He has two methods how to tell it. First one is just telling straight how it happened and second one is a bit more complicated. When Jerome is older he has big problems on telling his fiancèe about his father. He scares at how his fiancèe called Sally takes it. That is the reason why Jerome hasn`t shown Sally to his aunt. But when the wedding day is coming he has to show Sally to his aunt. In aunt`s place Sally finally hears about Jerome`s father and on big Jeromes surprise she tooks it really well. Only what she asks is what happened to pig. Probubly the pig died because it falled on fifth floor and no one can survive it.
Short story was pretty good. Plot was easy so it was easy to catching up with it. I recommend this for anyone.

A Shocking Accident

A Shocking Accident
Short story “A Shocking Accident” by Graham Greene tells about Jerome whose going through a tragedy (his father was killed by a falling pig). Jerome get engaged with Sally and she will chance Jerome’s world. Jerome becomes a different, happier person in the end of the story.
In the beginning Jerome was quite young when housemaster, Mr Wordsworth tells to Jerome that his father is died in accident. Mr Wordsworth tells him the incident of his father with the pig falling on him. Why Mr Wordsworth went to the window and turned his back on Jerome? maybe because he started laughing and he didn’t want show it to Jerome.
When Jerome was a child he believed that his father either “ran guns” or was a member of the British Secret Service. He thought his father is a kind of hero, as many of children are thinking about their parents. When he grew up he understood his dad was a common man who wrote books.
Soon, Jerome realized that this incident was a comedy to other people. Jerome rehearsed the method of recounting his father’s death because he wanted to reduce the comic. He was scared how people would relate. He had two possible methods. The first method led gently up to the accident, so it was described the listener was so well prepared that the death came really as an anti-climax. This method was good because people didn’t usually laugh him and they believed the story was true. The other method had virtue of brevity. In this way the main thing came up immediately so the listener was surprised and he didn’t understood story so he didn’t laugh. Jerome scared that his fiancée, Sally, would laugh when she will hear the story of his father’s death. He can’t tell that her himself. He knew that his aunt will inevitably tell how Jerome’s father dead for his fiancée, and that’s why he was very anxious about Sally meeting his aunt. Jerome’s aunt come to visit week before wedding and tell the story quickly and briefly to Sally. She was surprised but she didn’t laugh. Jerome was amazed because Sally didn’t laugh and that’s why Jerome feels his heart sang with joy and that his had appeased for ever!
Jerome and Mr Wordsworth’s dialogue tells little bit about them: Mr Wordsworth didn’t really know how to tell about death, he just shilly-shally. Finally he told it to Jerome and Jerome wasn’t so sure what to feel then. Maybe Wordsworth scared how would Jerome react. I think Mr Wordsworth is careful man, maybe little base (he almost laugh when said “a pig fell on him”. In dialogue Jerome was a silent, typical little boy who was just surprised by father’s death.
Sally’s final comment was very important for Jerome. The comment means that she understood how painful and dramatic father’s death was. She didn’t laugh, she was horrified. And that comment had appeased Jerome’s fear for ever. Sally’s great personality changes his life!
But what happened to pig? I think that pig is alive but he had hurt himself when he fell on Jerome’s father. Maybe the pig has now his own family and his living a life full of joy…… or maybe somebody have ate him. Who knows?

The Seven Dials Mystery

The Seven Dials Mystery

Agatha Christie wrote the novel called The Seven Dials Mystery in 1929. This novel was first published in Great Britain by Collins. Lady Agatha Mary Clarissa Mallowan is best known from her thrillers which she had written by name Agatha Christie.

The Seven Dials Mystery is one of these thrillers. The story is based on a mysterious secret society called the Seven Dials. Along the story two characters gets killed and their nearby friends starts to investigate what on earth is happening. Different kind of clues comes to them; letters from the victims of this cruel chain of events, words from a dying man trying to tell them about the Seven Dials and so on.. When these young, curious people realise that all of these clues are related to each other and the mysterious words “Seven Dials” shows up in many contexts, they muster their courage and begin to find out what is going on.

This novel has many characters which makes the story complete. The main ones are Superintendent Battle, Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent, Bill Eversleigh, Jimmy Thesiger, Loraine Wade and of course the two victims Gerald Wade and Ronny Devereux.

The sructure of the book is very well built together. In the beginning happens something that defines the whole idea of the story and when you get to the end of the book, it turns out why eveything went that way. The excitement stays all the way to the last pages of the novel which keeps the story captivating. The ending is nothing like you could have thought it would be, the heros aren’t that much heros anymore. Of course, love is added to a murder thriller.

The language of the book is old-fashioned and very much conformable to etiquette.
“Perhaps, Caterham, you begin to have some inkling of my purpose in visiting you this morning. – – I have given this matter my deep and earnest consideration. I can assure you, my dear Caterham, that I will cherish her exquisite youth..”.

At first, it was a bit difficult to stay in track among all these characters and their nicknames which are used a lot. But the further I read the more structured it all started to feel. I admire the character of Bundle; very self-confidence young lady with a huge amount of courage. I also can’t stop wondering how skilled writer Agatha Christie is when creating this kind of thrillers!

A shocking Accident

A Short story by Graham Greene

Story tells about boy named by Jerome and how he have to cope with a difficult situation. At first Jerome finds out that his dad have been in a street accident in Naples. Jerome was always thought that his father were a great adventurer who travelled around the world and faced spectacular places. Jerome thinks that police was shooting his father or something, so he asked: Did they shoot him through the heart ? But nobody didn´t shoot him, not at all. He died when pig fell on him straight from the balcony, in the fifth floor and broke his neck. Not really very dignified death for a noble man, it just don´t fit Jerome´s thoughts. Jerome was shocked about the situation, but he also realize that he have to find some way to tell others how his dad was killed. It isn´t that easy… Every time he started to tell about his father´s accident, the listener can´t help grinning its face or starting at laugh. Everyone just laughs at Jerome´s story, nobody really try to understand real meaning and how it affect Jerome feelings. It irritates him so badly. He use two different ways to tell others, first one was to tell all the story just how it goes and second was to tell only that: ”My father was killed by a pig”. He only get others answer like this: ”How interesting. I never realized there was pig-sticking in Italy. Was your father keen on polo?” It was apparently too hard to understand…
Years after Jerome gets married a girl called Sally, but he afraid to tell even her about his fathers death. Jerome tried to tell her himself several times, but he was too anxious to know all she could that concerned him. Week before wedding he took Sally to dinner to see his aunt and then came the moment when he have to face Sally´s reaction to strange story. He just prepare to face contempt. But Sally didn´t laugh at all. At the she just said: ”How horrible. It makes you think, doesn´t it?Happening like that. Out of clear sky.” And Jerome was so happy, finally someone realized everything. It was first time ever that somebody didn´t laugh at his story.
The story was weird at first glance, but after I readed it several times it opened to me. But I really don´t like it so much. Text was hard to understand and it was full of strange words, so I can´t follow plot perfectly. I think the story could have been more interesting if it contained more plot twists. However it was rewarding when you really understand the meaning of this strange story.

Why, Honey?

This novel tells about a mother who can’t trust her son and starts to afraid him. The boy (Hartley) can’t tell the truth to her and he gets outbursts sometimes. In the novel mother finds out unpleasant things concerning about her son. There are happening several uncertain things that Hartley can to be a part. For example the mother suspects that her son is guilty of their cat’s (Trudy) death. The neighbour saw two boys in the field putting firecrackers in Trudy´s ears and one of these two boys ran towards to their house.

Hartley got a job and he lied to his mother about the wage. He said that he earned 80 dollars, but mother found later a stub from his pocket, where read that the wage was 28 dollar for real. He lied also when he was going to show but mother found out later that he went to the school dance or spent the evening riding around with somebody in a car.

The mother supposed that Hartley was gone on a field trip and he told to mother about the trip and what was happen on there. Next day mother found a note from school, where they asked permission for a field trip.

The mother was gone to seek groceries on the Hartley´s car, but she found shotgun, knife and bloody t-shirt there. Hartley saw that and told his mother that it was caused by his bloody nose and told to throw it away.

Hartley was often nights away from home and that’s why mother worried about him. He got nervous for mothers caring.

Mothers worry was sometimes understandable because his boy never told truth and he acted strangely. Hartley felt that his mother was too carrying. Mother´s claims were justifiable and convincing. If I was his mother I would also have been worried about him and his doings.
I can imagine that mother says claims to Hartley assertively voice what makes it seem sinister.

In the last section mother asks from sender of letter where he get know her identity, because she wanted that nobody will find out that. She wanted that her son think that she was dead. She is afraid him so much.

Mother is writing letter to man who was taken contact to her. In the beginning of letter reads “Dear Sir” that refers to a man. I think that person would be her son, because of the last section´s writings. While in the beginning of letter, writer seems to be for example Hartley´s father.

I think that the narrator of novel is reliable and she tells her real feelings.

The Last Spin

The last spin is short story which is written by Evan hunter. Story tells about Russian Roulette which is game where the loser are that one who shoot him self first. In the story Danny play against Tigo, who is an enemy.
The story begins when Danny and Tigo sits around the table, and Tigo shows the gun which is Smith & Wesson .38 Police Special. Guys are talking about why game has to play and the reason is that Tigo’s club has ordered that the relations between club and Danny is going to clear that way (So Tigo has nothing to against for Danny). The game starts when Tigo decides to pull trigger first. Both of them are very lucky and they both survive from ”first stage” (1 cartridge in one of the six cylinder). Then next they put one more cartridge, and somehow they survive also that ”stage” and Tigo wants to stop the game and he decides to put one more cartridge to cylinder. Tigo starts first, but only what hears is ”CLIC”. Between The shooting shifts boys talking about their own lives and get to known each others, and they planed to make a boat trip on the lake on Sunday, but before that Danny’s must pull the trigger for the last time. ”The explosion rocked the small basement room”- that’s the sentence, which is written in last chapter in The Last Spin short story by Evan Hunter.

In a story were ironic moment when Danny didn’t dare to close his eyes while he was pulling the trigger, because he feared that Tigo going to do something to him, if he close his eyes.

The narrator in this story is impartial. Story narrator is good I like the way how the plot is told.

The Dream Begins

Goal! The Dream Begins is the first part of goal trilogy, all of them tells about Santiago Muñes. Who is very talented and skilled young footballer. The Dream Begins tells how to Santiago comes the real professional player.
Santiago lives in poor family in Los Angeles, and they lives illegally in America. They left Mexico behind ten years ago, because of bad conditions and their mother had abandon them. Santiago works in La as a gardener and in Chinese restaurant and plays only for hobby in local team which consist of work friends. But Santiago’s live turns up suddenly when former Newcastle United player and scout Glen Foy notice Santiago and offers to Santiago try out to Newcastle United (big club in England). So Muñes works really hard for his dream in two work, and he gets the money that he needs, to travelling in England but his father stoles those money and spent moneys to the new car as an investment of fathers gardener firm. Anyway he gets the money from his grandma and goes to Newcastle secretly for his father. In England hi lives whit Foy and training in Newcastle United his try out is only a one month, so he has real hurry to show his skills to coaches. At first everything is not going so well, but anyway he gets place for a team, his first game is totally flop because he has asthma and jealous team meat breaks his inhaler. After game coach lets him go but way to airport Galvin Harris comes to same taxi, who the is star of the team and he talks to second chance to Santiago whit coach. Next downhill on his way to first team, when his dad dies suddenly in La. But Santiago decides to stay in New Castle whit his girlfriend who’s the nurse of team. The movie end for a big game which decides teams destiny. And for a last minutes New Castle gets free kick, and Santiago shoots the winning goal.

Kuno Becker acts Santiago Muñez. Becker is not so famous actor, but I think that he was really good. All Goal movies are very special for that at there are also real life football players acting them selves. however Santiago Muñez is not real life player and not also Galvin Harris (=Alessandro Nivola). But it make that movie very realistic when Santiago’s other team mates on the field also real life players.

The Dream Begins is a 2005 film directed by Danny Cannon, he has known about C.S.I tv series. The movie’s plot was good so good for him. Movie didn’t have so much special effects than I expected, but camera work was good because camera moves a lot.

The thing in the movie, which I didn’t like was that in the games Santiago were much better than the team mates and that feels very unrealistic in real life.
Movie’s genre is of course sport movie, also drama and romance.
movie’s soundtrack is PlayGround Superstar by Happy Mondays.

I recommend this movie for everyone who watches sport. I would give for grade: 8/10

Taken 2

I watched a movie called Taken 2 which was sequel for movie taken. It was an action film and I liked it. The movie was pretty much same kind than first taken.
Plot of the movie is protagonist Bryan Mills whos actor is Liiam Nelson killed lot of people in first movie because they had kidnapped his daughter and now father of one of the boys whom Bryan killed wants to revenge. His plan is kill whole Bryan`s family when they are holiday in Istanbul.
Unfortunately, Taken 2 is mostly an empty retread that, despite some high-octane action scenes. If viewer have seen Taken he can guess almost everything what is going to happen in Taken 2. The story is less engaging, character dynamics are less believable, and action set-pieces are less thrilling. If viewer is person who merely want to see Bryan snap necks and crash cars this movie will be good for him.
The expanded roles for both Grace and Janssen who play roles of Bryan`s daughter and ex wife offer a little in the moment to moment enjoyment of the film as the larger family story is often melodramatic and relies heavily on familiar platitudes. In movie there are nothing else than one man`s army who kills every bad people and at the end goes happily home with his family.
After all the movie was huge disappointment and much worse than the first movie.
If you have nothing to do you may watch this once but it will not be good entertainment.
