Harrison Bergeron

Name of the novel is Harrison Bergeron and its written by Kurt Vonnegut. The Novel tells about year 2081 when everybody was equal. Nobody was smarter or stronger than anybody else. People who were smarter than others, had for example a mental handicap radio in their ear. Every people were forced to be equally stubid.

The story tells about George and Hazel Bergeron. Their 14 year old son Harrison Bergeron was kidnapped by the United States Handicapper General. One day George and Hazel were watching ballerinas dancing on television. Suddenly there was a special news bulletin. The news told that their son, Harrison, had just escaped from prison. He was arrested because of suspicion of plotting against the covernment.

Because Harrison was a big guy and very strong, he escaped. He screamed that everybody needed to obey him. He wanted to choose himself an empress. Very beautiful ballerina volunteered to be his empress. They started to dance. Their romantic dance was interrupted by Diana Moon Glampers, the Handicapper General. She shot both Harrison and the Ballerina to death. Harrison’s parents didn’t quite understand what had just happened. So they continued their lives.

The story was a little bit strange but still it was quite interesting to read. I hoped that the end of the story would have been happier.

The Red Badge of Courage

The Red Badge of Courage is a novel written by Stephen Crane (1871-1900). Short parts of the novel were published in newspapers in 1894, but the full version was published in 1895.

The novel’s main theme is theme is courage and heroism of the soldiers in the American Civil War. In the novel the feelings and actions of the soldiers are explained thoroughly. Even though Crane was born after the Civil War, he was able to explain many small details accurately. It’s believed that the battle taking place in the book is based on the Battle of Chancellorsville. The type of language Crane used in his novel is hard to read for people living in the 21st century. For example he uses words that aren’t really used anymore and the accent of the soldiers vary, since the people fighting for the South spoke in a different way than people who lived in the North.

The main character of the story is Henry Fleming, a young Union soldier who against his mother’s will joined to fight in the war. Throughout the book Henry is trying to convince himself that he is a hero and he has the courage to fight. Wilson, together with Henry they both gain the reputation as the best fighters of their regiment. Jim Conklin, Henry’s friend who dies in the early part of the novel, this affects Henry until the end of the novel. The lieutenant, he is a young commander, who swears a lot during the battles. He and Henry try to motivate the men during rough times.

The novel starts with Henry wanting to join the Union army, his mother is against it but Henry doesn’t obey his mother. Henry has ideals about the war and how the battles go, but when it finally comes to the moment of battle he is shocked. It’s nothing what he thought it would be like. Henry struggles with the idea that maybe he is not a hero after all. But as the story goes on Henry matures a lot and is able to be satisfied with himself.

Once

I picked out movie called Once. It is a musical film and I have seen it couple of times last time being yesterday as it was aired on tv on channel Liv. Movie sets in Dublin, Ireland. It was directed and produced by John Carney and it was published in 2006. What is interesting about it is that it was made with a very low budget. Movie was shot with only 130 000 € which is quite low comparing to nowadays Hollywood films. It is also interesting that neither of the lead actors are really actors because they are both professional musicians. Once has gotten nice awards such as ”Independent Spirit Award” in 2007 for the best foreign film. Other nice award would be the Academy Award for Best Original Song that ”Falling Slowly” won in 2007.

PLOT

The film is a story about to people who love music and have lost their ex-love. The guy in the film plays his guitar on the street on a daily basis. One day he meets a girl who likes his songs and also learns that he can repair vacuum cleaners. She happens to have a broken vacuum cleaner so she insists that he fixes her vacuum cleaner.

They play music together, for example in a music store because they can’t afford the piano. The guy wants the girl to do lyrics for one of his songs. After a while they are recording songs with bunch of people who also play on streets everyday. The owner of the studio thinks that they are just bunch of morons but when he hears them play he suddendly wants to record with them through the night.

After the demo is recorded, it’s time to say goodbye. Both of the lead actors are in love with each other but they both know that it is not the right thing to do. The guy buys the piano from the music store to the girl and after that the guy leaves to London for his ex and the girl stays behind in Dublin.

MUSIC

All the songs in this movie are made for the movie. So they are original songs and yet every song is likeable. Pretty often movie producers choose to use already existing songs but in this case the actors are professional musicians so it is understandable. Most songs are written and composed by Glen Hansard, the male lead actor.

FINAL WORDS

I can recommend this movie to anyone who likes musical films. If you are looking for action/horror/etc. you should consider looking for it elsewhere. Movie is very simple and nothing has been ”polished”. People are messy and do normal things and the terrain for example is just normal city with not-so-clean apartments.
