Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a American drama film directed by Richard Brooks. The movie was released in 1958 and it’s starred by Elizabeth Taylor (as Margaret ”Maggie”), Paul Newman (as Brick) and Burl Ives (as Harvey ”Big Daddy”).

The film starts when a drunken Brick Pollit brakes his leg by leaping hurdles on a trackfield, dreaming of his glory days in high school sports. He is an ex-football player, who had later switched the ball to alcohol and who’s marriage with gorgeous Maggie is cold and indifferent from his case. Big Daddy is dying for cancer, although he doesn’t know that yet himself. He arrives home from the hospital just in time for his 65th birthday and his both sons, Brick and Garson, with their families had gathered together to celebrate this big day. Everybody knows about Big Daddy’s dying but they wants him to remain happy, so nobody tells the truth to him. But in the evening of his birthday he finds out the real side of his illness. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a great story of self-loathing, growing, falsehood and living in it and ofcourse love.

Characters are all very professional. Margaret’s ”The Cat” loneliness and Brick’s refusal to make her his desire, has made her hard, nervous, and bitchy. Brick is the favorite son and mourned lover. Brick embodies an almost archetypal masculinity. At the same time, the Brick before us is also an obviously broken man because of his repressed homosexual desire for his dead friend Skipper. Big Daddy is Brick’s father a large, brash, and vulgar plantation millionaire who believes he has returned from the grave, though he is very ill. Deep in his heart, he’s still a loving old man despite the brash appearance.

I have watched this film about five times and I never get bored to it. Film represent old-fashioned but wealthy life of a big family, with it’s sorrow, hate and love. I recommend this film to all who has an interest in old classic dramafilms.

Wuthering Heights (2009)

Wuthering Heights is a romantic movie and based on the novel by Emily Brontë (released 1847). This old love story has inspired many directors particularly since 1939, when the first film of the story was released. I watched version of the motion which was released in 2009 and directed by Coky Giedroyc.

Wuthering Heights is a traditional and unique romantic movie at the same time. It tells Cathy Earnshaws and Heathcliffs story. Next I’ll tell a little bit about the plot, so if you don’t want to know, stop reading! So, Cathy and Heathcliff are childhood friends, whose friendship turn into love. They can’t get married because Cathy has a highter social status than Heathcliff. Heathcliff goes away, and Cathy marries Edgar Linton. Later Heathcliff comes back, but Cathy is pregnant to Linton. Cathy gives birth to a little girl and dies herself in the birth. Cathy and Heathcliff both knew that they love each other, despite they both got married with someone else. In a sense they get each other in the end, in a sense not. Anyway, their love story is so touching, love between them is passionate and strong and it’ll never finish.

There are two actors who starring Wuthering Heights; Charlotte Riley (Cathy Earnshaw) and Tom Hardy (Heathcliff). Their roles have been criticized, but my own opinion is, that they suit quit well in their roles. I’ve red later that Riley and Hardy got engaged after the film, and you can notice their chemistry in the motion. Some scenes are a little bit too dramatic and make me smile though I must be touched. And other scenes make me cry, too.

Camerawork is usual and classic, I don’t have nothing to say about it. There aren’t any special effects in the film, too, and only a little bit music. At the beginning music creates exciting feeling and with the picture it’s nearly scary.

I can’t decide if I like the movie or not. I like it at the first sight, but when I watched it second time, I was more critical. I don’t believe I would watch the film third time. Nevertheless, the story is very beautiful, and I can recommend Wuthering Heights to everyone, who likes romantic movies. This is the motion, which worth to watch; but maybe one time is enough!

The Young Victoria

The Young Victoria

The film is describing 1800´s history, when 18 years old Victoria became the queen of United Kingdom. The plot of film based on true story, which increased film´s interesting and gave information about real history. Film´s plot was a little bit drag and in the beginning it was difficult to get into the plot. In the beginning film described too much about that times history and scheming to Victoria, because everyone wanted to take advantage of her. I think that the film should been more interesting from the beginning if you had previous knowledge of that topic. The film´s plot could have been clearer. The film bettered toward of the end, because you get into plot. I would have wanted a little bit less policy and history and more describing about personal life of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Their life described only in general level. The film included also funny scenes. The film´s rate of progressing was slowly but sometimes it still moved on long steps. The Young Victoria is all in all impressive film.

The films characters were true and they have lived in during the 1800s. The Queen Victoria is historically significant person and many people have previous information about her, which helped to watching in question film. Characters of film were believable and their appearance and costumes was invested in very much. In the film was also involved animals and they brought more authenticity.

The films characters not really develop in the story line at all because they are only described in Queen´s youth years.

The film has good and delightful actresses. Emily Blunt (Queen Victoria) acts the leading role excellently and she empathizes to her character amazing well such as Rupert Friend, who plays Price Albert. Also others actresses plays their roles well, but they maybe stayed in the shadow such as Paul Bettany who plays Lord Melbourne.

Genre of the film was romantic drama, but I think that movie emphasized too much history and policy. The film would be able to go beneath the surface and describe more in-depth their personal life.

Leap Year

Leap Year

Leap Year is a romantic comedy which was released in April 2010. The movie is written by Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont and directed by Anand Tucker. Leading actors of the film are Amy Adams and Matthew Goode. The original language is English.

Leap Year is set in our times Ireland and USA. Anna Brady (Amy Adams) has decided to make a trip to Dublin, Ireland to propose her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) on a leap day 29th of February. According to old Irish tradition woman can propose to man only on that day every fourth year. When Anna faces problems while trying to get to Dublin in time she mets this handsome and very charming Irishman, Declan (Matthew Goode). Declan helps her to get to her destination. At first they don’t get along at all but when the movie goes on they start to have feelings towards each other. Declan makes Anna think what is really important in life by setting her a question “What would be the first thing you would take with you when escaping from a burning house?”. In the end of the movie this question is what makes Anna rethink what she wants from life and with whom she wants to live it.

The plot of this movie is quite predictable but still it’s made in a more fascinating way than many other romantic movies I’ve seen. Even though you can quess the ending pretty easily the movie isn’t boring at all.

One feature that makes this movie fascinating is the camerawork. Who wouldn’t like Irish landscapes and sunsets? Scenes are also filmed in a way that you can look chains of events through the characters eyes. Together with soundtrack these marvellous views makes you not only see what happens but also feel the atmosphere.

Two main characters Anna and Declan are from different cultures and they speak with dialects. All the Irish sayings and the sarcasm you can hear especially from Declan are what makes this film also funny not only romantic. Because the movie is consentrated mainly on these two characters their personalities have to be nuanced to keep you interested.

This movie was easy to follow and not too syrupy for me. I would say it is a fresh version from traditional love story with all its turning points. And to be honest, I don’t feel bad about Jeremy losing Anna to this incredibly charming Irishman Declan.

The Vow 2012

The Vow was released year 2012 in United States. The film is a romantic drama directed by Michael Sucsy , starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum. The story tells about a married couple who gets involved in an car accident leading to a tragic consequences.   When Paige (Rachel McAdams) wakes up in the hospital, she thinks her husband Leo (Channing Tatum)  is her doctor. She had lost all the memories from the past few years. Leo has difficult decisions to make and great challenges concerning the saving of their relationship or at least trying to make his wife believe that there has been true love between them. Paige’s parents did not provide any support for Leo. They rather wanted to start over again with their daughter because during the past few years they had not been in very good relations with Paige.

The main reason why the movie impressed me so much, was that, the film is based on the true story of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, who wrote a book about their marriage. The book is also known as ”The Vow”. Scriptwriters (Abby Kohn, Jason Katims, Marc Silverstein, Stuart Sender) brought up the story delicately by creating a sweet heartbreaking love story. From the very beginning, every scene and plot twists, provides the viewers feelings of sensation.

The question is: Can the love of a lifetime find a second chance?

The actors are able to convey their characters’ feelings very well, which is necessary in order to help audience fall deeply into the movie’s  emotional scenes. The viewer is easily picturing similar situation in his or her life, and evaluating the great challenges of it. It is absolutely heartbreaking to watch how Leo is trying hard to help Paige to get her memory back. Nevertheless, Paige only remembers the very old and far history of her life. The love story is genuine, and it is proofed since Paige falls in love with Leo once again, even she does not fully remember Leo and does not get her full memory back either.

For those who are interested about spectacular effects or music in the movie, there is unfortunately nothing very special to offer. However, the lyrics were very sentimental love songs, which fitted well with  the movie and its’ message about true love.

I would recommend the movie to all of those whom, both, enjoy relaxing and emotional time with their own loved ones or friends. Moreover, it can also be recommended to the male audience who wish to prove, that they are comfortable enough with their masculinity to see a movie like the Vow. This drama is not made only for women!
