Jaws- Fan-fiction

This fan-fiction is based on the film Jaws. It´s a horror movie directed by Steven Spielberg. In the story a giant white shark attacks beachgoers on fictional Armity Island.

Police commissioner Martin Brody answered his phone. He was told that in the beach have been founded a dead girl. Martin went to the beach where he met the marine biologist Matt Hooper. Matt was investigated the body and was sure that the death was caused by shark attack. Martin asked the mayor to close the beach but mayor refused.

The city wasn´t afford to keep the beach closed for the tourist season. Incident framed for a boat accident. But next day in the beach was founded two dead person more. The city hired shark hunter called Quint. He, Martin and Matt went out to sea to kill the shark. But the shark is more than nine meter long. It easily destroyed their boat.

Two weeks after they had left to sea Rescuers began looking for them. Rescuers found only parts of their boat. Shark seemed invincible. Immediately after this the beach was closed for entire summer. Despite this the shark got five more victims in that summer. A lot of people moved to another city caused by fear of a killer shark. Great coastal city had become a small village. But still the story about the killer shark has only just begun.

Napapiirin sankarit

Napapiirin sankarit (Lapland odyssey) is a finnish comedy film. The film is directed by Dome Karukoski and it was published in 2010.

The story tells about a man who doesn´t get anythig produce. Finally his girlfriend gets tired of her lazy boyfriend. The man must bring digibox or his girlfriend is going to leave him. He and two friend of his go to buy a digibox. But they must first earn money for the digibox. Here begins amazing adventure with all kinds of funny incidents.

The actors were succeeded to keep their characters plausible through the film. Viewer understand easily the nature of the characters. It was for example  fun to watch how desperate they were when they try to get that money for digibox. It seemed very plausible. Actors weren´t so well-known but it didin´t hampered.  Great work by actors!

Special effects weren´t so much but enough. It´s easy to notice that the movie hasn´t  been made in Hollywood.  Special effects aren´t so realistic compared to effects which is made in Hollywood. But this doesn´t mean that special effects were bad. Those were still quite good. In particular noise of special effects sounded realistics. For example it sounded really realistic when the car went off the road.

Soundtrack was Kristiina Wheeleer´s song, ”Kiitos kun muistit”. It was adabted to the film very well. Other songs were also well chosen. All the twelve songs fit into their places. All  the songs were made by Finnish bands.

It´s nice to see that here in Finland know how to make movies. This movie was the best Finnish film in my opinion. The reason why I liked the movie so much was that it was funny and it was also a good plot. Lapland´s beautiful nature is shown on the film nicely. I could recommend this film for all.

Not so sparkly

Twilight is Stephenie Meyer’s book series which first book came out in 2005. Books’ main character is 17 years old Bella who moves to her dad into the little town. There she meets boy called Edward who later turns out to be a vampire. They fall in love and start to date. Edward and his ”family” don’t drink human blood but they live on animals’ blood. Generally vampires are super fast and extremely strong in Twilight. They don’t sleep therefore they don’t need coffins and in addition sunlight don’t burn them to ash because Twilight-vampires shine like diamonds. Moreover they aren’t scary but they are supernaturally beautiful and attractive, they even smell good.
Meyer’s Twilight series has been judged and criticised a lot about how vampires aren’t vampires anymore. Twilight has been mocked much. Now I want to tell my own fan fiction which little make fun of twilight even though I personally like these books.

It was almost midnight when Bella was lying on her bed. Her dad Charlie had fallen asleep about an half hour ago on the couch and Edward hadn’t come yet. Bella spinned impatiently in bed dreaming about how beautiful she would transform after she had become a vampire: ”Oh that would be so perfect! My hair would always be shining and vibrant and I never had to wash them. My face would be like marble; smooth and pure. I would smell better than rose garden. My teeth would be straight and pure white. I would be so flawless that nobody could resist me!”

Suddenly Bella heard rattle outside which interrupted her dreaming. She thought that noise was Edward who soon would climb to the room from window just like he always did. Bella closed her eyes and waited his cold, mellow lips on her skin. But for some reason it took this time longer than normally. When Bella finally opened abashed her eyes above her was a dark shape. That thing didn’t look like Edward so Bella turned lights on. That not so dark shape anymore was the scariest and the most disgusting creature which she had ever seen. It looked like human, man actually but only much more uglier. His skin was grey like dead and eyes, the eyes were beastlike. Man’s hair were shineless and rickety and his teeth were filthy and yellow and his breath smelled appalling. The whole creature was dirty and stinky like he would live in landfill. Actually man was like he had lain hundred years under the soil.
”Edward is that you? Like… a thousand years older?” Bella asked.
”What? No! I am a vampire!” creature said.
”Really? You don’t look like a vampire. They are beautiful and shining and they smell good” Bella wondered.
”Oh well, maybe because I am a real vampire, not just teenagers’ wet dream! vampire whizzed.
”In that case, could you transform me to a vampire because…”
Frustrated vampire didn’t give a chance to Bella that she could finish her sentence. He bit her to neck and sucked all blood from her. Bella’s transformation started immediately but instead that it would have took three days it happened right away.

Bella jumped out of bed and ran excited front of the mirror. In minutes transformation was ready but she wasn’t happy about her new look. Bella’s circles extended into her chin. Her hair were absolutely dead and she was paler than albino. Her eyes weren’t golden like she had thought to but they glowed red.
”This isn’t cool! This is horrible!” Bella shouted. ”Why do I look like this? I wanted to be shining and fabulous!”
”I don’t care what kind you wanted to look. You are now a vampire so deal with it.” vampire growled.
Bella stared terrified herself from the mirror while vampire jumped of the window. Before he left he shouted to Bella: ”And by the way don’t go out to the sunlight. You won’t beam like Twilight-vampires… you’ll burn alive.”
”Life sucks!” she cried.

COMPREHENSION

Danny and Tigo are members of street gangs, based in different clubs. Danny’s gang had been shooting at a store in Tigo’s turf the day before. They were to settle this privately, without anyone else getting hurt by taking a shot at Russian roulette.

Tigo goes first. He just wants it over with. Danny starts chatting. The first click. They both think that Russians are crazy. They talk more and find out they both have families. Neither of them really want to be in the gang. Danny knows Tigo’s girlfriend. They start to hesitate.

Both of them are immigrants. Likely from the south. They decide to add more rounds to make their inevitable, untimely deaths more likely. They discover that they’ve lived fairly far away from each other and don’t know each other. A friendship forms between them and they decide to go to a lake on Sunday. Danny pulls the trigger for the last time.

ANALYSIS

8. Either Tigo wasn’t going to be able to tell about it or he wouldn’t have any more worries.

9. At the beginning the text seems to tackle the case of gangs in the US. Soon the two men, however unlikely, develop a kind of friendship. The text talks more about the stupidity of people and their hate rather than gang wars.

10. There were a lot of words that were colloquial. E.g. the words like the excessively used ’piece’ or the humorous sounding ’diddlebop’.

11. They trusted one another. Even liked each other. Minutes earlier he’d seen him as an enemy, a threat to his personal safety.

INTERPRETATION

They’d joined their gangs because they thought they had no choice at the time. They found the thought of somebody looking after them appealing.

Why, Honey?

Why, Honey?

Why, Honey? is a short story that, is written by Raymond Carver and it tells about a mother who has a son, who’s past is pretty colorful and future is quite surprising.

The story tells about a woman who lives in the United States of America with her one son. Her son has always been a good student and good from his heart, but she has been noticing some changes in her son. He has been acting strangely and some odd actions have been occurring in his life. The family’s cat had disappeared in 4. Of July and the next day their neighbor had seen that some boys had been violently acting towards the cat, and the neighbor Mrs. Cooper  recognized one of the boys as son of the text’s mother.

This was only the beginning of her sons disturbing acts. Next odd moment was when he was working as a stockboy and one night when he returned and his mother asked about his daily salary, he answered and didn’t want to discuss about it no more. Afterwards she found stub from his work, where she found out that the real salary was significantly smaller than what he had told her earlier. It isn’t clear if he had stolen money worth the first salary claim.

This kind of behavior kept going on and on and more strange incidences happened. He lied about his school things and all other things, and because of this his mother had no clue of his true personal life and everything he had really been doing without her knowing. But the well known mothers love against her child kept her from even considering that her son is doing something rather shady.

Not long after that, she went to find groceries in her son’s car and then she found bloody shirt that apparently belonged to him, he came and saw his mother find this shirt and explained that his nose had bled on it, she doubted it but trusted still her son.

Finally she had realized that this couldn’t continue after he had shouted at her for nothing. The next day he had changed and he was happy and had made supper for her confused mother. She asked if they could talk and she told her what had been bothering her about their relationship. He went silent but then he told his mother to kneel down in front of him, and then she ran to her room crying, then he left with necessary equipment and never returned.

After that unfortunate event, she saw him at his graduation. Then she found out of all his political success and he made it even to a governor. She realized that so powerful man could find out where anyone lives and execute serious actions, she decided to get a secret phone number and also she changed her name. She still lived in fear that her own son would hurt her, even though almost everyone else would probably only be proud of their son.

Why, Honey?

”Why, Honey?” is a short story in a letter form in wich a concerned mother opens up about his disturbed son. Her son has been acting odd since he was little boy. He gets often the most scaring outbursts and doesn’t seem to be able to tell the truth. The mother tries to contact with his son, but it seems impossible.

Everything started when he was fifteen years old and a neighbour had seen as he and his friend had killed the familys beloved cat with firecrackers. At first, the mother couldn’t absolutely believe what she was hearing. Things started to get even weirder when the mother discovered that his son was lying about normal things with no reason, for example wages and where he had spent his freetime. The mother would ask him where he was last night and he would say he was at the show, and later she would find out that he had been in school dance. Once he told for his mother that he was in a field trip, and even describes all the things he had seen. Turns out, there was no field trip. Why couldn’t he just tell the truth?

As the boy starts to get older he buys a shotgun and a hunting knife which both he keeps in his car, because his mother doesn’t want weapons in the house. Later the mother finds in the trunk of his car a shirt full of blood. Naturally she is shocked. Her sons explains that he had a nose bleed.

The mother is desperate and desides to talk with his son about his lying and askes why does he do that. The son commands his mother to kneel down.

She starts to become anxious when her son becomes a governor. The power in wrong hands is a dangerous weapon and the mother has to change her name, address and phonenumber.

I believe that the mothers concerns are real and the claims are convicing. The bloody shirt couldn’t be because of a nosebleed. He seems to tell obvious in any chance he gets. This is an apparent mark of a pathological liar. His outbursts tells that he is dangerous.

The narrator presents the information in a sinister way by not actually saying what everybody is thinking (he is crazy). She tells facts and doesn’t use exaggerative adjectives and questions many things which makes the text more dramatic. In the final paragraph the narrator wants to find out how the receiver has he reached her and why. In my opinion it seems that the person who she is writing is maybe a friend or a relative. If she had tried so hard, as she says, to keep everything secret, why would he tell all this for a stranger? He must be somebody, who she really trusts.

Why, Honey?

Why, Honey? is a short story written by Raymond Carver. It tells about concerned mother whose son started to lie and get outbursts. The whole story is actually a letter written by the mother. In the letter the mother tells about her distant relation with her son and how they don’t know each other anymore.

I think that the mother is telling the truth. Her son’s behavior is alarming. He was only 15 when he started ruthlessly lie and that is when a normal parent begins seriously think what is wrong with the child. I think the mother’s evidence is convincing. She found out that her son hasn’t been at work anymore even though he told he was. Of course these kind of things make the mother think why he can’t just tell the truth. Why is he so mysterious? What is he hiding? The mother just wants to be a part of her son’s life. The section of the text where their neighbour Mrs Cooper found their dying cat in her backyard was some kind of turning point. That is because Mrs Cooper saw two boys putting firecrackers in cat’s ears and she was quite sure that the other boy was the mother’s son. The mother couldn’t believe that until her son started to do other odd things. I think that she has thought about it a lot and now she probably believes that it was her son, unfortunately.

The text is quite sinister and sad. The mother writes directly from her heart and she seems to be very broken. She really wanted to know her son better but it was so complicated. Of course it is hard when your own son just lies to you and get scary outbursts. The story is quite sinister also because it tells about separation of two family members and it is always a sensitive and sad thing. It would be strange if the mother wrote happily and the thing wouldn’t bother her at all. I believe that her son was the most important thing in her life and nowadays she don’t even know him. It must be hard.

I think that the story is interesting and it brings about different opinions. It is also very easy to read. The text is clear and the story proceeds fluently. Overall a very good story.

Harrison Bergeron

The short story ”Harrison Bergeron” fantasizes how the world will look like in the future(2081), when everyone is forced to be equal. Everyone who is smarter, stronger, quicker or better looking than an average person, has to wear handicappers – radios to interfere smart one’s thougts, heavy bags to slow down strong and quick people, and ugly masks for beautiful people. The system is monitored by the US Handicapper General Diana Moon Glampers, whose duty is to make sure that everyone follows the equalizing legislation. And of course there is extremly hard punishments for those who doesn’t follow the laws.

The main characters of the short story are George Bergeron, his wife Hazel Bergeron and their son Harrison. In our time George would probably represent an average person, but in this short story he is forced to wear a handicap radio in his ear and a handicap bag around his neck. Hazel represents the average person of this short story – she is so unintelligent, that she can’t think about the same thing more than few seconds. Their son, Harrison, is extremely smart, handsome and strong. He is so perfect, that the government was afraid of him – perhaps the govenment thought that he would be leader the resistance movement or perhaps they thought that it would be easier take him to the jail. Anyway, Harrison escaped from jail and went to the studio and released people from their handicaps in live tv-show in order to show that they would be happier without handicaps. The story doesn’t tell why did Harrison does this – did he notice the errors of the system or did he just want to be  better than everybody else.

The government is described as a ruthless system, which doesn’t care about freedom and human rights. The main issue of the story is the relationship between the government and the citizens – if citizens don’t question the laws, laws become habits. And in the story George and Hazel are used to the handicap-system – George thinks that the handicaps are a part of him and he thinks that society would fall apart if people start cheating on laws, and they would slip back to ”dark ages” of competition. So the story is defensive statement for peoples freedom and capitalism.

The Last Spin

The Last Spin is a short story written by Evan Hunter. It tells about two men,Tigo and Danny who are gangsters form two gang. The story begins in the situation where men are solving quarrel between two gangs. There had been shooting during a truce. Gangs order these men solve this quarrel without any street boppin, so they used a Russian Roulette. They started that ”game” and during this thrilling event of life they talked about their lifes and they got to know eachother. During the time Tigo put more cartridges into the sylinder to get decision, first second cartridge and finally the third cartrige, and now it was three to three, life or death. Finally they made friends each other and they even planned future, getting boats on the lake on Sunday etc. They hesitated the last spin but Tigo ventured to do that and pulled the trigger but nothing happends, he survived about it. Danny took the gun cocksurely and belived that he could also survive and see to Sunday. Unfortunately it was his last spin. His head explode and Tigo looked incredulously that and began weeping.

When Danny was pulling the trigger he didn’t dare to close his eyes. That was very ironic because he was so sure for their plans of future and he was very self-confident of survival. Danny and Tigo had so nice plans of future so it’s very tragic that the story has unhappy ending.

I think that it was nice to read the story because there was colloquial language and it was mostly dialogue. There was also slang which made text more expressive and little more challenging to read.

This short story was very compelling. Towards the end the suspense tightend and the end was surprising making it more realistic. I think that the story could be also true event because e.g. in the USA there is thousands of gangs.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail ENA5.2

Monty Python and the Holy Grail. What a name. What a movie.

Monty Python, despite the singular name, is actually a comedy group consisting of six comedians and/or actors. The Holy Grail is by no means the first (or last) project of the group: by the time they had already produced a TV series and a movie. The film was released in 1975 and is still known to people in our current generation. Making a humorous movie that upholds it’s charm through decades is truly an achievement to be proud of. The latest re-release is from 2012, when the movie was updated to Blu-Ray. The movie has also often been ranked to be one the best comedies ever.

The genre is easy to identify. Even the preface of the movie is humorous and it’s not exactly hard to giggle within the first few minutes. As a matter of fact, if you can actually find most of the jokes in the movie you’ll be laughing half the time, guaranteed. Dark humor is littered all over the movie and it’s not all obviously visible and thus understanding some of the jokes makes it all the more fulfilling. The forementioned multilayered humor that works across generations makes it all the more interesting.

The soundtrack is interesting. The actual voices of the actors are lacking in many places due to the technology available at the time. The soundtrack, however is not very astonishing. The songs used in the movie are not all up to par but none exactly lack any certain qualities. They’re just borderline average, just as many soundtrack after the Holy Grail.

The special effects are quite impressive considering the time of it’s production. The animations inbetween the scenes are better than the average animation at the time and the actual effects, e.g. Explosions are used both in exactly the right places and in some scenes overused to emphasize the ridiculousness. Overall the SFX are very well done, although not quite up to modern standards for quite obvious reasons. The movie also breaks the fourth wall on a few occasions, ridiculing itself as well as the audience.

The cast is not really anything to look at besides the members of Monty Python. The whole movie was performed and voiced by about 15 people which isn’t that many.

All in all the movie is brilliant. The charm doesn’t seem to wither even with time and the Holy Grail is always entertaining to watch. If you haven’t had the chance to see it I strongly advice you to pick it up from anywhere you can. This is a movie you don’t want to miss, even after 38 years.
