Requiem for a Dream

Requeim for a Dream was released in 2000. It a drama film directed by Darren Aronofsky, and it’s based on a novel with the same name by Hubert Selby, Jr. Starring in the movie are Ellen Burstyn, Jared Leto, Jennifer Connelly and Marlon Wayans. The movie got a positive response by its viewers and critics.

The movie follows the lives of Harry (Jared Leto), his girlfriend Marion (Jennifer Connelly), his mother Sara (Ellen Burstyn) and his bestfriend Tyrone (Marlon Wyans). The movie is divided into three seasons: summer, fall and winter. The season reflects to the behavior of the characters during that time period. Harry, Marion and Tyrone are heroin addicts, who make the money for their drugs by dealing drugs. Harry’s mother Sara spends her time home watching television. After finding out that she is overweight her doctor prescribes her  pills that should help her with the problem. The pills contain amphetamine and after a while Sara becomes addicted on them and starts rapidly losing weight. Harry and Tyrone have been able to save quite a lot of money from their drug deals and they both hope that one day they can move to a nicer place and live a better life, but one day when Tyrone gets arrested Harry spends all the money by bailing Tyrone out. During the movie the addictions of the four main characters get worse and the need for a bigger dose grows. During the final season (fall), all of the four start doing everything they can to get more drugs, and the viewer can see how low some people will go to get something they want.

The soundtrack for the film was composed by Clint Mansell. The music in the movie has a great effect and it really adds the dark feeling and sadness to the movie. It has been praised by many critics and websites. The music is mostly heard on the background and it’s not loud but so that the viewer can hear it. The movie also has some great special effects, they mostly occur when the people in the movie are on drugs. The special effects try to explain how the people feel.
