The Last Spin

The Last Spin is short story written by Evan Hunter and it has been published in Open Road Course 5 in year 2009.

The story tells about two guys, probable gang members, solving their problems by gang’s methods. The guys, Danny and Tigo, are members of rival gangs and their groups are expecting them to solve the dispute in a way which will end up fatally, Russian roulette. While pulling the trigger the guys had a conversation which brought them closer to each other. They nearly became friends and they even planned founding a new group together. However, Danny’s pull was his last act, he shot his head off with a pull that they agreed will be the last.

The language used in this short story has some gang slang words and expressions. For example  “pieces” , “chicks” and  “I never seen you neither”. Also, Danny is from Bronx where is a lot of gangs and which also has an influence to the language. The particular language causes that the story feels more like a underground or mafia story. The language also makes the story more interesting.

Danny and Tigo are enemies just because they belong to different gangs. They hate each other even they have never met which tells something of the power of a gang. They don’t know life outside a gang but they started thinking that things could be different. While pulling the trigger, the guys discussed about their feelings of belonging to a gang and it seems that they are just used to be part of a gang and neither of them are happy. It seem that both guys fears but they don’t want to show it. At first they wanted to look tough and harsh but step by step they are revealing their emotions. They even talked about their girlfriends and planned a Sunday trip on the lake together.

In my opinion the short story was nicely written and interesting. It ended dramatically which suits this type of story. It feels that this could have been a real life story.

Ismo and Seppo at the disco

It was beautiful summer day and friends Ismo and Seppo were very bored. They had nothing to do. They decided go to fishing. They tried found them stuffs. Ismo had lost his fishing rod. Seppo tried call to Ulla but Ulla didn’t answer to the phone. Seppo had no idea where his wellies are and he thought that Ulla knows. Well, they could not go to fishing because they didn’t find them stuffs. They had to do something else. Seppo get a great idea! They go to the disco! Ismo was very excited. They hadn’t be many times at the disco. They left to prepare for the evening. Ismo put his new shirt on and Seppo brushed his mustache. The disco was held in the old barn and there was a 90’s theme. Ismo and Seppo found the bar and they went there. They sat there and watched dancing people. One woman, Liisa, went talk with Ismo. Ismo was very confused. Liisa asked Ismo came dance with him. Ismo looked Seppo and Seppo laughed and told Ismo to go dance. Ismo was little bit drunk and he said that he is the dancing king. Liisa laughed. Seppo continued to drink. But then, some Helena arrived to the disco and she saw Seppo. Helena went talk with Seppo. Seppo thought that he saw an angel. That’s because he was so drunk. Seppo asked that are he dead. Helena said no and Seppo ”woke up”. Seppo asked who Helena was. They started to talk and they went dance with Ismo and Liisa. Liisa and Helena knows each other so they spent the evening all together. Ismo and Seppo were very drunk because they decided have fun because they hadn’t been long time at the disco. Helena didn’t drink anything so she was like a cabby. That night began two wonderful love story.

The Little Prince

The Little Prince was released in 1943 and the author of the novel was Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. The Little Prince is a fairy tale to children and adults. Main character is the little Prince.

An young boy, the little prince, lives on the asteroid (or planet) called B-612. There are three volcanos and a beutiful rose on the asteroid. The little prince falls in love with the rose but the rose behaves badly. So the little prince decides to leave the asteroid and visit on the other asteroids. The little prince meets six different inhabitants (for example the king, the business man and the drunkard) who try to reach for happiness in different way.

I liked the book very much and ,y favourite character was of course the little prince. I think that people can identity to the little prince because he made a lot of questions and he always wanted to know answers. The little prince never stop asking.

In my opinion there were many good parts in the book but my favourite part was the part when the little prince said:” But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart” because it was a good point though. The purpose of the book was that everybody would understand that they can found happiness in different way and it is the reason why I recommend the book to everybody.

I chose this book at first because it was short but still it was strange and hard to read the book in English first because I didn’t understand every single word but I think that I understood the main things. The Little Prince was a nice story about the little prince’s adventure. If you want to know what happened to the little prince and how clever things he says I really recommend the book to you all.

Full stop is a short story which is written by Alecia McKenzie. It tells about correspondence between grandchild and grandmother. I red it from the Open Road. The grandchild Carmen is almost thirty and the grandmother`s name is Scottie who is pretty old. Scottie raised Carmen and her brother in an island.

Now, grandmother lives there alone and Carmen lives in New York with Normy. Normy is Carmen`s husband which Scottie calls hubby in the letters. Scottie hasn`t seen Carmen for a while so in a letter Scottie tells to Carmen that she would like to see her and her brother Richard before she die. That is Scotties excuse for getting Carmen to visit her.

Carmen regularly sends money to Scottie involved in the letters because she is so old and not so rich. With the money Grandma Scottie is able to buy a new mattress to her bed and a dress to a funeral. Scottie also put the money in the bank and get to buy some paint for her old house, but she hasn`t money enough to pay for a painter. Carmen doesn`t like an idea that Grandma will paint the house herself, but Scottie tells that there is another reason too than money: she thinks that painters on the island are all thieves. And Scottie manage to paint it.

Carmen also send money to Scottie for getting somebody to put burglar bars over all the windows, because on the island there are thieves who are breaking into everybodys house. Scottie says that she doesn`t like the burglar bars and that God will protect her. However, at the end of the story, she decides to put up the burglar bars because the robbers were broke into Scotties friend`s house. I think that her decision is symbolic of changes in her relationship with Carmen in the way that she agrees to change things because of Carmen and in the way that both of them takes care of each other.

Carmen has a mother too, who live in England, but Carmen doesn`t want to meet her mother because she have seen her only once and she hasn`t forgive her it. Mother`s story what happened once is a little different than Grandmother`s. She blame Scottie almost everything, but Scottie says to Carmen that don`t believe her.

Carmen`s brother is Richard and he lives in California. He doesn`t write very much to his Grandmother because of his work, he says. Someone could think that Richard is just like his mother, who just leaves and doesn`t care her relatives, instead of believe him. In the other hand, some believe him because they have themselves been in the same situation where they hadn`t no time to keep in touch their relatives.

My opinion is that Grandmother Scottie is caring, sense of humor and polite, because already at the beginning she says:”Thanks for the money.” When Scottie upbraids her grandchild of her way to write, I think that she says it a bit joykingly. Scottie also prays for Carmen every night and sends the letters to her so, that means me that she is caring.

My opinion of a question ”Is Grandma a good Christian?” is that I can`t classify who is a good or who is a bad Christian because all people are equal. Only which means is question that has a person accepted Jesus as your personal savior or in other words, is a person believer. The only one who knows the answer to the question, is a human believer or not, is Lord. What I can see on the text, Scottie prays, so she must to believe in God. She also tells points from the Bible, so I would assume that she is a believer.

I think that Scottie speaks the truth of that why she raised Carmen. Of course, I can`t be sure, but I think that if Scottie is a believer how could she lie to her own grandchild that her mother couldn`t take care of her? Carmen`s mother says that when she came back for her children, Scottie refused to give them up. But who could take the mother`s children away from her?

 

 

 

 

Homer and Bart

One day on 20th century Homer and his son, Bart were going to local Pizza Hut to eat. On the way to Pizza Hut they saw an old man on side of the street screaming some unknown  words. Homer and Bart were disturbed by this and went to ask the man, what bothers him. Man told them that he was homeless and needs help. Homer and Bart ingnored this and continued their trip to Pizza Hut, but the man remained on the street yellying .

After eating Homer and Bart went to home, and because it already was night they went to sleep. At night Homer wakes up to a loud beating of door, he wakes up and opens door where is the same old man who was yelling at the street at afternoon. Man demanded Homer to let him in and give him some food since he was starving to death and Homer left him without food earlier but Homer shut the door.

24 hours later, There was same knock again and once again Homer went angry open the door but suddenly there wasn’t the old man but a pile on horsepoo. Homer stared the pile confused, why was the pile there?, and why his garden? Homer got his answer soon as the pile turned into bart’s face and swallowed him. Nothing was heard about homer after that.

Later that night Bart was sleeping on his room, when he heard a knock on his door and wondering about that he went to open the door. And he saw homer, but he was not normal, there was something smelly and brown about him. Bart just said ”Go sleep old man” and closed the door, but Homer came throught the door and streched his neck and tied it which killed Bart.

Remember me? (2008) is a novel written by Sophia Kinsella. It tells about Lexi Smart who wakes up after a car accident and can’t remember anything about last three years. All she remembers is that she’s 25 years old, she has crooked teeth and not so fabulous love life. But when she wakes up she has everything she ever wanted. She is the boss of her department, has a perfect row of teeth, designer bag and clothes and a husband that everybody dreams of. It all seems great but is it really what it looks like?

The main character Lexi Smart is a person that you can really relate on. In the beginning of the book she is just an unlucky girl that has some family and work issues. And when she wakes up she feels just the same but everybody keeps telling her how she had changed her way of acting during these three years. She has some problems changing her old habits such as eating fast food and being such a couch potato . She now has an amazing apartment, closet full of designer pieces and she hears that she’s now as cold as ice according to colleagues that used to be friends. But she realizes that she’s not that person that everybody thinks she is. It’s really funny how Kinsella describes all the funny mishaps Lexi is going trough. It shows that life is not that enjoyable when you have to watch everything you do, eat and say.

The family relationships between Lexi and her mother and sister are complicated and quite funny to read. Her mother is a bit silly woman. She has many dogs that she cares more than her own children. She doesn’t understand why Lexi suddenly are acting differently and asks her help. Sometimes I felt frustrated when she didn’t understand her daughter. Lexis’s sister doesn’t help Lexi even the amount that their mother. She causes many trouble to Lexi who remembers her as a sweet and innocent girl that she was three years ago. But I thought that their relationship are quite normal for two sisters who are going trough different life situation. And in spite of all the problems she causes to her sister she is the only one who understand Lexi’s situation.

I don’t know if you can use the word genre when you are describing a book but I think that this books genres are drama and at the same time comedy. All the incidences that happens are quite dramatic but all scenes are sprinkled with comedy. I think that’s why it’s so interesting. You want to get to the end so you know what really happens to her eventually.

I really like the way Kinsella is writing. I think her focus group are mainly girls but of course boys can read it also. This book is easy to read and it’s just a perfect book to read when you want to relax and not think about anything. I also like Kinsella’s other work and I recommend them also for everyone to read.

Back to the Future

Plot

Back to the Future (1985) is American science fiction adventure film which is directed by Robert Zemeckis and produced by Steven Spielberg. The movie tells about the adventure of Marty McFly who helps out his friend Dr. Emmet  ”Doc” Brown and accidentally sent back in time from 1985 to 1955. Marty meets his young parents in 1955 and accidentally his mother falls in love to Marty and then Marty must repair the damage what he had done in the 50’s and he must get his mother to fall in love to Marty’s father George and then Marty returns back to 1985 with the help of Doc.

It is beautiful morning in Pori on Monday 13th 2012. 17-year old boy named Marty is going to meet his old friend Dr. Emmet ”Doc” Brown. ”Hello Doc!” Says Marty. ” Oh hey Marty long time no seen!” Doc states. Marty and Doc are in Doc’s garage. Doc wants to show Marty his newest invention. ” Wow a brand new De Lorean! But why does it look little a bit different?” Marty asks. ” It isn’t just a De Lorean or a vehicle. It’s a time machine Marty! Doc says. ” That’s pretty awesome!” Marty screams. Then suddenly Doc’s dog named Einstein starts to bark in the backyard. ” I’ll go check is Einstein okay but don’t touch anything when I’m gone Marty. Do you promise?!” Doc asks. ”Yes I’ll promise” Marty assures. But Marty can’t keep his promise and jumps in to De Lorean. He accidentally presses the big red button and Marty disappears with De Lorean. Couple minutes later Marty appears back. But everything looks different. Marty drives to the local shop. He asks for the shopkeeper: ” What time is it? ”. It’s Monday 13th 2032. Is everything okay? The shopkeeper asks. Marty seems shocked. He tries to start car and press every single button in the car. But the car doesn’t work anymore. ” What am I going to do?! ”. He cries. But then he hears his mother Lorraine’s voice. ” Marty wake up or you’ll miss the school. ” Mom what day is today? ” Marty asks. ” Marty it’s Monday 13th 2012 is something wrong? ” Mom asks. ” No mom. Everything is just fine. I just saw a really bad dream. ” Marty sighs with relief

A Shocking Accident

A Shocking Accident is a short story written by Grahman Greene. It tells of one young men, called Jerome whose father died in a accident. Jerome was just a nine when it happened. He was at school when the headmaster, Mr Wordsworth invited him to her office. Jerome had no fear of trouble. Mr Wordsworth told that Jerome’s aunt has called her that Jerome’s father had been an accident. It was a bad accident. His father had died in Naples when he was walking at street and a pig fell on him from the balconie. After that Jerome rehearsed how to tell the story of his father’s dead. He was afraid that everone would laugh at him. He got engaged with a girl named Sally, but he hadn’t told to her how his father had died. How would he tell for Sally that story without her starting to laugh? However one day Sally heard how Jerome’s father died, but she didn’t laugh at all.

The main charecter is Jerome. His father was so important to Jerome and he worshipped him. Mr Wordsworth is a headmaster at Jerome’s school. He told bad news to Jerome. According to dialogue it was easy for Mr Wordsworth to tell bad news to Jerome. He almost started laughing. Jerome answered to him ”What happened to the pig?” So he didn’t take his fathers death so tragicly. At least he didn’t show any signs of sadness during dialogue. Jerome’s aunt had no sense of humour. His aunt told an accident to headmaster and Jerome’s fiancee. Sally, Jerome’s fiancee was twentyfive years old and her father was a doctor.

Jerome created two different ways how to tell his fathers death at school without everyone laughing. ”My father was killed by a pig”, was a shorter method. Other method was a little bit longer, he would explain that accident more.

Sally’s final commet is important, because Jerome had worried all the time if Sally will laugh. But she didn’t laugh. She only wondered ”What happened to the poor pig?”. That was the same question that Jerome asked from the headmaster when he heard about the accident. But what really happened to the pig? Jerome said that ”They almost certainly had it for dinner”. I also think that they ate it.

I think that this story was really wierd. When I read it, I thought ”What, he was killed by a pig?! Did I read right?” But it was a good story when I realized it.

 

Fan Fiction: Little red riding hood

Little Red Riding-Hood was an endearing and cute little girl. She has cute little cheeks and pretty green eyes with long black lashes. Today she has woke up early and the sun was already shining really brightly. She had slept well and now was stretching her hands. This day is going to be exciting but she has no idea what is going to happen.                        ”Oh, what a beautiful day!” she said out loud alone in her little room and looked out the window. But now Little Red Riding Hood found herself hungry and went to the kitchen for ask mother something to eat.

”Today you must go visit for your grandmother, little sweetie” mother said and sat next to the daughter. ”Grandmother is sick and needs you to take some medicine for her” mother continued. Little Red Riding-Hood noded her head and promised that she would go there anytime.

On the way Little Red Riding-Hood felt herself big girl. Finally she could go alone trough the forest which has been warned about many times. Despite the warnings, she was not frightened about the forest’s dangers. She was just happy just even this once go for a walk without the mother.

Now the evening was getting darkened. Little Red Riding-Hood has not any torch. She has not mobile either. She has the medicine only with her. She could not turned back home because now it was too late and she had walked almost two hours. Just fifteen minutes and she could not seen in front of her. She panicked, burst into tears and started to run to grandmother’s house. Suddenly he stumbled to something…

”Where are you hurrying?” asked an angry bird. He was red, little angry bird with angry voice. ”Nowhere” Little red Riding Hood answered. After a little conversation,  The Angry Bird brought her new friend to the grandmother. Any dangers like a wolf was not seen, and the grandmother got the medicine. Today, she is doing well and has a new pet, an angry bird.

 

Fan Fiction / Cross-over: The Big Bang Theory & Supernatural

The Big Bang Theory is an American comedie series. It tells about two physicists, Sheldon Cooper and Leonard Hofstadter, and their friends who are also geeks except Penny, their good-looking neighbour. Supernatural is a horror and kind of drama series, in which the Winchester´s brothers Dean and Sam are fighting against demons and other paranormal creatures.

The story:

Sheldon and his friends Leonard, Howard Wolowitz and Rajesh Koothrappali are eating Chinese fast food at Sheldon and Leonard´s apartment like every Tuesday night. An interesting conversation is going on:

Sheldon: Did you know that the original recept of 7 Up included Lithium because its effect which levels down the changes of the emotions…

Penny rushes in and interrupts: Hi guys, sorry I´m late, where´s my meal? Oh thank you Leonard. Have you noticed that there´s some kind of living creature in one of the washing machines? It´s really creepy.

Also Amy Farrah Fowler and Bernadette Rostenkowski Wolowitz join the group, while they have come to see Penny. Bernadette is Howard´s wife and Amy Sheldon´s girlfriend -believe it or not. Bernadette: Yeah, it´s noisy, we heard it, too. What could it be?

Penny: I don´t know. I didn´t have enough courage to open the machine and check it out…

Leonard: Well, I could open it.

Rajesh whispers something to Howard, because he can´t spek when there are women in the room. Howard laughs and says to Leonard: There´s our knight with his white horse coming to save his princess! Leonard glares at Howard and Rajesh.

Sheldon: It´s possible that you have imagined the whole thing. I always wash my clothes in the same laundry and I have never heard anything unusual. 

Amy: But I was there and heard that too though I´m a neurobiologist. I don´t imagine things. Sheldon: You´re a neurobiologist but that´s not an excuse you couldn´t go nuts.

Rajesh whispers something to Howard again. Howard: Rajesh is scared. He thinks that it can be a ghost. (giggeling)

Leonard: Let´s go and see what´s going on. And the whole group gathers in the laundry.

Neither Leonard, Rajesh or Howard venture to open the washing machine to see inside of it, because the creature clanks and clatters the machine every once in a while. Sheldon tries. He reaches slowly the washing machine and knocks three times: Knock, knock, knock, who is there? And then the creature makes a noise: Knock. Knock. Knock…

Sheldon goes in panic and shouts: It can´t be impossible, it exists!

Howard: Maybe we should call to these Winchester brothers, you know, these men from television? If it really is a ghost… Howard gets the honour to call them, of course, because it was his idea.

A while

Dean and Sam arrive. Sam: Are we in the right place? Someone called us because of some kind of demon. Howard: Yes, this is the place.

The creature makes a horrible noise and Amy says: Oh no, this is like in Hell! Dean: You have no idea. I have been there.

Sam: Back in business. Let´s face it! Dean and Sam surround the machine with salt and also make a pentagramm to the roof above it. Then the demon can´t escape. Sheldon explains that it wouldn´t work but nobody listens. Penny falls in love with Dean right away and she tries to attract his attention every moment when it´s possible. When the brothers are ready, Sam reads some magical sentences from their father´s book. Right after that Dean opens the machine.

Dean: What!?! Just an ordinary mouse!?!

Sam: Really? Did we come here for nothing? You guys, you haven´t even opened it, didn´t you? We´re not pestscontrolers!

Penny: But if you´re tired because you´ve drived the whole way here, you can stay a night at my apartment. You can take care of me, I have been so scared…

Dean: Frankly my dear, I don´t give a damn.
