The Last Spin by Evan Hunter, Analysis

The last spin is short story written by Evan Hunter, it tells a story of Danny and Tigo who are part of two rival gangs, or ”clubs” as they call them. In the beginning Danny see’s Tigo as his enemy, but as the story goes along they share their thoughts and start to be come friends.

It is kind of ironic thing that two people who are supposed to hate each other just because of the neighbourhoods they live in decide to call it a rest but since they wanted to start a friendship from a clean table Danny had to do one more round of Russian roulette, wich was at the same time beginning and ending of a friendship.

The language of the story is quite easy to read and understand with only exeption on the gun spesifications.

When Danny gathers up his dignity and asks Tigo to join him to the lake on sunday it shows how he breaks the rules and boundaries of a ”club” member.  Like he says that hes part of the club just because of the place he lives in and he doesnt even like the other people in his club.

The last question for the story in our book is ”Why do you think the two characters joined their gangs.” I find the sentence a bit misleading since they did not join the gangs together even though they would propably have wanted to if the story would have not ended. They would propably have left their gangs in the end but since misfortunate ending of Danny they could not make the difference in ganglife.

The story was good even though it felt a bit short and maybe at parts it was repetitive. The tense moments when Danny and Tigo were about to pull the trigger were well described. In conclusion the story was good And worth reading.

The Last Spin

The Last Spin is a short story in Open Road. It was written by Evan Hunter. It tells about two young men, Digo and Danny, who are settling a conflict between their gangs by playing russian roulette. This story is mainly formed of dialog.

The story starts when Danny and Digo face each other around a table in the basement. They don’t want show their real emotions in the beginning to each other. When the game roll forward, they begin to understand each other. The game continues as the same time when the story’s main characters debate about the gang issues. It was a signal that they had bonded in the sort time, when Danny asked Tigo to come with him to the lake, even if they had been enemies. Tigo raised the level and added a second bullet to the gun. He slapped the cylinder and it whirled and the stopped. Tigo put the gun to his head and close his eyes when he pulled the trigger. He heard the empty click and put the gun down on the table. When it is Danny’s third time to pull the trigger, they make a plan to stop the game after it. If the gangs would not accept that they would start their own. The story ends when Danny pulled the trigger the last time and died. At the same same time Tigo put his head on the table and began weeping.

Sometimes the text was diffucult to read, as it appeared in a lot of colloquial language, like example ’street bopping”, what means that when some people fight in the street. The text was still a well-written and rolled forward smoothly. The short story is good in my opinion, even in the beginning of the text it could not get me interested about the plot. The final part of the text hooked me to read it more and more specifically.

Taken 2

I watched a movie called Taken 2 which was sequel for movie taken. It was an action film and I liked it. The movie was pretty much same kind than first taken.
Plot of the movie is protagonist Bryan Mills whos actor is Liiam Nelson killed lot of people in first movie because they had kidnapped his daughter and now father of one of the boys whom Bryan killed wants to revenge. His plan is kill whole Bryan`s family when they are holiday in Istanbul.
Unfortunately, Taken 2 is mostly an empty retread that, despite some high-octane action scenes. If viewer have seen Taken he can guess almost everything what is going to happen in Taken 2. The story is less engaging, character dynamics are less believable, and action set-pieces are less thrilling. If viewer is person who merely want to see Bryan snap necks and crash cars this movie will be good for him.
The expanded roles for both Grace and Janssen who play roles of Bryan`s daughter and ex wife offer a little in the moment to moment enjoyment of the film as the larger family story is often melodramatic and relies heavily on familiar platitudes. In movie there are nothing else than one man`s army who kills every bad people and at the end goes happily home with his family.
After all the movie was huge disappointment and much worse than the first movie.
If you have nothing to do you may watch this once but it will not be good entertainment.

The Red Badge of Courage

The Red Badge of Courage is a novel written by Stephen Crane (1871-1900). Short parts of the novel were published in newspapers in 1894, but the full version was published in 1895.

The novel’s main theme is theme is courage and heroism of the soldiers in the American Civil War. In the novel the feelings and actions of the soldiers are explained thoroughly. Even though Crane was born after the Civil War, he was able to explain many small details accurately. It’s believed that the battle taking place in the book is based on the Battle of Chancellorsville. The type of language Crane used in his novel is hard to read for people living in the 21st century. For example he uses words that aren’t really used anymore and the accent of the soldiers vary, since the people fighting for the South spoke in a different way than people who lived in the North.

The main character of the story is Henry Fleming, a young Union soldier who against his mother’s will joined to fight in the war. Throughout the book Henry is trying to convince himself that he is a hero and he has the courage to fight. Wilson, together with Henry they both gain the reputation as the best fighters of their regiment. Jim Conklin, Henry’s friend who dies in the early part of the novel, this affects Henry until the end of the novel. The lieutenant, he is a young commander, who swears a lot during the battles. He and Henry try to motivate the men during rough times.

The novel starts with Henry wanting to join the Union army, his mother is against it but Henry doesn’t obey his mother. Henry has ideals about the war and how the battles go, but when it finally comes to the moment of battle he is shocked. It’s nothing what he thought it would be like. Henry struggles with the idea that maybe he is not a hero after all. But as the story goes on Henry matures a lot and is able to be satisfied with himself.

Reaper Man

Reaper Man is a fantasy novel written by Terry Pratchett who is an English author. He writes mostly comical fantasy novels. He is best known of the Discworld series (about 40 book) and the novel Reaper Man is the eleventh book in the Discworld series. It was published in 1991.

Book begins when Death has retired. Or, rather, has been retired. Reason WHY is that he has become too much of a character. He has gotten his own hourglass, his own time and at the end of it he will die. But Death seems to be happy, he finally has his own time and now he is going to waste it.

Death starts working at the old ladys farm. Same time all over the discworld, everyone and everything suddently stops dying. Book follows charecter named Windle Poons, an old wizard who was meant to die but that seems to be a bit hard when the Death isn’t around. He tries to find out the way to die as the same time the whole town of Ankh-Morpork is in chaos.

Book is rather less satisfying than other Pratchetts works, but is largely rescued by Windle Poons. I never much cared for him before he died, but the zombie Windle Poons is hilarious and can carry the entire book while rest of the charecter, except the Death, are easy to forget and impersonal. Death has very philosophical part in the book. Novel has the great Pratchett property that, even if the plot doesn’t always work, there will be some great lines or discovered references that will put a smile on your face.

Language of the book was quite hard to me read. I needed dictionary many time. Propably hardest was to understand the words that Pratchett had made by himself by twisting english and the sentences were also very long: “Studies have shown that an ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.” It was very nice that Pratchett had highlighted Deaths speech: “Picture a tall, dark figure, surrounded by cornfields…
NO, YOU CAN’T RIDE A CAT. WHO EVER HEARD OF THE DEATH OF RATS RIDING A CAT? THE DEATH OF RATS WOULD RIDE SOME KIND OF DOG.
Picture more fields, a great horizon-spanning network of fields, rolling in gentle waves…
DON’T ASK ME I DON’T KNOW. SOME KIND OF TERRIER, MAYBE.
…fields of corn, alive, whispering in the breeze…
RIGHT, AND THE DEATH OF FLEAS CAN RIDE IT TOO. THAT WAY YOU KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE.
…awaiting the clockwork of the seasons.
METAPHORICALLY.” Thanks to that it was a bit easier to stay focused on the text and not to wonder WHO said WHAT.

I would recommend this book to all who likes crazy humor, funny charecters and discworld series. Yet this isn’t maybe the book to start if you have not ever before read Trerry Pratchets Discworld production.

A Shocking Accident

A Shocking Accident is a short story written by Grahman Greene. It tells of one young men, called Jerome whose father died in a accident. Jerome was just a nine when it happened. He was at school when the headmaster, Mr Wordsworth invited him to her office. Jerome had no fear of trouble. Mr Wordsworth told that Jerome’s aunt has called her that Jerome’s father had been an accident. It was a bad accident. His father had died in Naples when he was walking at street and a pig fell on him from the balconie. After that Jerome rehearsed how to tell the story of his father’s dead. He was afraid that everone would laugh at him. He got engaged with a girl named Sally, but he hadn’t told to her how his father had died. How would he tell for Sally that story without her starting to laugh? However one day Sally heard how Jerome’s father died, but she didn’t laugh at all.

The main charecter is Jerome. His father was so important to Jerome and he worshipped him. Mr Wordsworth is a headmaster at Jerome’s school. He told bad news to Jerome. According to dialogue it was easy for Mr Wordsworth to tell bad news to Jerome. He almost started laughing. Jerome answered to him ”What happened to the pig?” So he didn’t take his fathers death so tragicly. At least he didn’t show any signs of sadness during dialogue. Jerome’s aunt had no sense of humour. His aunt told an accident to headmaster and Jerome’s fiancee. Sally, Jerome’s fiancee was twentyfive years old and her father was a doctor.

Jerome created two different ways how to tell his fathers death at school without everyone laughing. ”My father was killed by a pig”, was a shorter method. Other method was a little bit longer, he would explain that accident more.

Sally’s final commet is important, because Jerome had worried all the time if Sally will laugh. But she didn’t laugh. She only wondered ”What happened to the poor pig?”. That was the same question that Jerome asked from the headmaster when he heard about the accident. But what really happened to the pig? Jerome said that ”They almost certainly had it for dinner”. I also think that they ate it.

I think that this story was really wierd. When I read it, I thought ”What, he was killed by a pig?! Did I read right?” But it was a good story when I realized it.

Fan Fiction

I choose Simpsons to my fan fiction. The Simpson are very popular animation tv show which comes once in workday. The Simpsons tells about yellow family who are living in town named Springfield. Simpsons family have five members: Homer (Dum and simple person. Dad.) Marge (Unemployeed and lonely. Mum.) Bart (He does very much pranks , oldest child.) I woke up and go downstairs where Marge is doing breakfast for me , Homer, Lisa, Bart and Maggie. After we have eaten Homer goes to work and i go to show Lisa and Bart’s new school. Right when lesson started Bart started to pranking. He changed piece of chalks to candy chalks and teacher was very angry. Luckily he didn’t get busted. Bart did get fight in the second break and he got invite in principals office. After the school day was end , we all three went to home and waited for Homer to come back. This book tells about MGB agent and a war hero Leo Demidov who lives in Joseph Stalin’s Soviet Union and starts to investigate a series of child murders. MGB is the State Security Force, and it is said that no MGB officer is more courageous or idealistic than Leo. Leo has a beautiful wife Raisa and luxurious house compared to the others, and he also makes so much money that he can provide a decent house to his parents. He is very passionate about his job, and wants to do right things; serve his country as well as he can.

Suddenly everything in Leo’s life turns upside-down. He’s loyalty for Soviet Union starts to waver when he witnessess an interrogation of an innocent man. He is also ordered to investigate his own wife and that’s when he has to choose where his heart truly lies. Leo feels like his every belief is shattered and doesn’t know where to go or what to do. Still he doesn’t want to stop investigating the serial murder’s backgrounds and motives. Leo is exiled from his home and starts to wander around the Soviet Union with his wife Raisa. While they are on the run, Leo starts to realize that the Soviet Union is the danger, not the serial killer. In the country whe’re they are living, the crime does not exist. And that is something what Leo wants to change.

I loved this book, it’s a real page-turner. Child 44 really deserves to be called thriller. It is very thrilling, sometimes even a bit scary and mostly really entertaining book. I have read it twice in english because I have it in my very own bookshelf. When you start reading it you’ll become addicted to it, like I did.
