A Shocking Accident

A Shocking Accident is a shorty story in Open road. It was written by Graham Greene.
It tells about Jerome and his father’s death.
Jerome was called into his housemaster’s room on a Tuesday morning. Housemaster, Mr Wordsworth told him to sit. He told Jerome that his aunt had called. He had some bad news to tell. Mr Wordsworth said that Jerome’s father had been in a serious accident in Naples. It was a street accident, and his father had died in it.

Jerome thought, first, that his father was shot, but Wordsworth finally told what had happened. ”Your father was in a poorer quarters of the city of Naples. There, the pigs are kept on the balcony. Your father was walking down the street when in a block of flats fell from the fifth floor pig on top of him. ”

Jerome appreciated and adored his father. His father was a writer. Jerome thinks that his father’s death was a comic. When he told about the school’s friends, he realized how it affects others. His father death after, him began to treat unreasonable, such as pigs.

Jerome loved her father. He has in possession of the album, which was a picture-postcards, and it eased her pain when her aunt began chatting with strangers on his father’s death.
His aunt would start, ”it was a tragic accident.” And people feels for compassion.
Jerome realized suddenly that rambling speech can be real. Him all his father’s death was terrible. He did not understand how it could permit such a civilized country. Her aunt had replied that ”I expect that Italy can be considered civilized.
Abroad happening all sorts of things, and my brother was hard to travel. He always filtered the water, because it was cheaper than buying mineral water. He was a careful man, but who could expect that when he is on his way to the Hydrographic Museum, he would die on the way? No one.”

Jerome has practised to tell his father’s death, to a short extent. In his view, there were two ways.

”Someone once told me, that in Naples always feels at home when you go to the rivers in Naples and New York in the same way. Where was I? In Naples, of course! Naples is poor. No washing or bed linens.
Livestock, pigs and chickens kept on balconies. Animals were not allowed to exercise and they fattens faster. I have no idea how heavy pig can be, but in Naples, the buildings are in need of repair. Balcony on the fifth floor gave out and pig bounced off the third-floor balcony on the street. My father was on his way Hydrographic Museum and the pig fell on top of him. The height and angle of broke his neck.”

The other method Jerome rehearsed had the virtue of brevity:
”My father was killed by a pig.”
”Really? In India?”
”No, in Italy.”
”How interesting. I never realized there was pig-sticking in Italy. Was your father keen on polo?”

In course of time, Jerome was become the accountant and he got engaged with Sally, who was twenty-five years old and his father was a doctor.

Jerome was concerned. He was fond of picture-postcards. He felt a longing to protect their memories. They were going to get married, and Sally, of course, wanted to know everything that was Jerome. Jerome was forced to tell Sally, his father’s death, even though he was afraid to laugh. But Sally was not laugh, but showed his regret.

Short story was very interesting and it is focused on the content of Jerome’s father in an accident. The content of the short story was very well written, and it was used for the imagination. I think the end is slightly open, but it is nice. I liked the story too, and I think it fits all.

The Last Spin

The last spin is a short story written by Evan hunter. The plot is consisted of two young men who are in a basement settling a conflict between their gangs by playing russian roulette. The short story is mainly formed of dialog between the two characters of the story, Tigo and Danny.

The story start with the boys in the basement facing each other around a table. In the beginning they are reluctant to show any real emotions to each other but as the chances of the next trigger pull being their last they start to bond. They realise that they are not so different from each other and that their gangs are fighting over nothing. The boys tell about their lives and they can relate to each other. When it is Danny’s time to roll the gun for the third time they make a plan to stop after it and if the gangs won’t accept it they would start their own. They make plans to meet the following sunday as Danny pulled the trigger the last time and died.

Due to the storys heavy consistancy of dialog the language what the boys speak plays a big role in setting the mood for the story. It is consisted of colloquial language such as guns being called pieces and various other words that either are still used nowadays or were used a long time ago in spoken language.

Danny asking Tigo to come with him to the lake was a signal that they had bonded in the short time they had known each other. It took him some time because they were supposed to be enemies. Asking Tigo to come meant effectively abandonning his gang.

It is clear that the short story is from a very different time than ours. The boys are driven to being a gang. It probably offered them a feeling of protection and a feeling of beeing a part of something in a time that things could be very rough.

In conclusion the short story is quite good. It has compelling dialog and the mood for it is set very well.

The Egyptian

The film The Egyptian was produced in 1954 in Hollywood starring by Edmund Purdom and Jean Simmons. It has been directed by Michael Curtiz and it is based on the novel of Mika Waltari with the same name. The Egyptian is so far the only Finnish novel which has been made a Hollywood-film.
The plot is an autobiography of Sinuhe, an Egyptian physician from 14th century BC. Sinuhe is an orphan but a poor Egyptian physician adopts him as his own son. Sinuhe becomes a physician after his studies in the temple and in the Hose of Life. During his studies Sinuhe makes friends with Horemheb and he loses his belief in gods. After saving the life of Akhnaton, who becomes a Pharaoh, Sinuhe is appointed as a Royal Physician. Sinuhe begins working as a physician but he gets seduced by Nefernefernefer and he loses all his property to her. Sinuhe gets cursed by the Pharaoh and his adopted parents die. Sinuhe buries his parents and escapes abroad with his slave Kaptah. There Sinuhe sees the misery of all man, no matter of their nation or colour of their skin. He prospers and sees new inventions such as iron, invention by the Hittites.
Sinuhe returns to Egypt, where Pharaoh Aknaton has initiated a new monotheistic cult of Aton. Pharaoh forgives Sinuhe. Sinuhe meets also his old beloved Merit and reveals that they have a son, called Toth. The priests of the ancient gods and Horemheb and other soldiers consider Pharaoh as improper to be a ruler and they want Sinuhe to kill him. Sinuhe doesn’t agree until a civil war between believers of Aton and believers of ancient gods begins. Merit is killed in the side of Aton followers and Toth and Kaptah escape from Egypt and Sinuhe never meets them again. In the end Sinuhe poisons Pharaoh Akhnaton and Horemheb becomes a new Pharaoh. Because Horemheb considers Sinuhe as a dangerous Believer of Aton he expels him to the coast of Red Sea where Sinuhe writes his story.
In my opinion this film was a great example among Hollywood-films: It doesn’t matter how in-depth or philosophic the actual story is: in Hollywood it will be just entertainment. Compared to Mika Waltari’s original novel The Egyptian is lackluster. The plot is also very simple and it does harm Sinuhe’s story of life. Sinuhe’s journeys to foreign countries and his idealistic period are neglected. There are also missing some important characters, such as Minea and Aziru. There is hardly anything intellectually challenging in the film. It doesn’t reach same levels as Waltari’s actual novel.
Even though the plot isn’t very good, The Egyptian earns some acknowledgment. The setting, the costumes and the special effects were very nice when it’s remembered the technology of those days. Also the music has to have a little credit because it was really nice part of the film.

Why,Honey?

Why, Honey? is a short story written by Raymond Carver. The story consists of the letter. The writer is a mother who is concerned about her son. Story not told any background information about a boy or a mother and it’s a bit confusing. For example, why a mother write a letter to someone about her son. Or why her son is so misbehaving.

When you read the text ahead, the more you will get information about who they are and what they are as human beings. To whom the letter is addressed are not told. However, the text suggests that the letter recipient is a man, because the letter beginning with the words” Dear Sir”.The story shows that the man to whom the letter is addressed has already made contact with the mother earlier.
At the beginning of the story, it appears that the mother is very worried about her son, but we will see later that the mother also afraid of her son. Boy’s behavior and actions are frightening, and he’s lying to his mother often. Mother’s fears are growing towards the end of the story. At the end of the story of a mother says in his letter that the boy is moved away. mother fears her son so much that she has moved and changed phone number secret. she seems to be surprised by a man contacting her, but at the same time relieved.
I think the story is good. However, the story plot was confusing and difficult to read. I would have liked to know who is the mysterious man to whom the letter is addressed. But perhaps it was the plot of this story.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction is a crime film released in 1994 and directed by Quentin Tarantino. The film is known for its brilliant dialogues, ironic humor, violence, nonlinear storyline and pop culture references. Pulp Fiction was nominated for seven Oscars.
The film connects the interesting storylines of different crime related people of Los Angeles. Considerable screen time is devoted to monologues and conversations between the characters that reveal their senses of humor and perspectives on life. The film’s title refers to the crime comics and novelty of early 20th century. All the events in the film relate to each other and they aren’t shown in chronological order, for example in the beginning of the film Vega and Winnfield walk into a bar wearing clothes they got from Winnfield’s friend Jimmie at the end of the film. Viewer has to be alert for the whole film or the storyline might seem a little strange. Pulp Fiction displays a lot of brutal violence and drug use and drug overdosing and a scene where mob boss Marcellus gets raped by two guys and Butch, who was also captured by the same guys, returns to save him by slicing the other guy open with a Katana-sword.
Main characters in this movie are hired hitmen Vincent Vega (John Travolta) and Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson) who work for the mob boss Marcellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), Marcellus’ wife Mia Wallace (Uma Thurman) and a boxer called Butch Coolidge (Bruce Willis). Casting in this film is spot on, I would give special credit to Rhames and Jackson for their unbelievable performances. Tarantino has a few actors that he likes to use in his films who also feature in Pulp Fiction, for example Tim Roth, who also played in the Reservoir Dogs (1992), Harvey Keitel (Reservoir Dogs), Uma Thurman, who played the leading role in the Kill Bill-movies. Tarantino usually has a small role in his own movies, in Pulp Fiction he played Jimmie, Jules’ innocent friend who helped The Wolf (Keitel), Vincent and Jules to clear mess caused by Vincent’s accidental shooting.
Like every Tarantino movie, Pulp Fiction has an amazing soundtrack. Dick Dale’s “Misirlou” plays during the opening credits. Tarantino chose surf music as the basic musical style for the film, but not for it’s association with surf culture as he has later said. The soundtrack album, “Music from the Motion Picture Pulp Fiction”, was released along with the film in 1994. The album peaked on the Billboard 200-chart at number 21.
Pulp Fiction quickly became regarded as one of the most significant films of it’s era and has become a legend in pop culture ever since.

The perks ofbeing a wallflower (1999)

The perks of being a wallflower is coming-of-age story written by Stephen Chbosky. It tells about Charlie whose freshman in high school who has habit to live in his own world but after making friends with two seniors in a football game his life turns around. They show him what the real world is like with its highs and lows. From his English teacher he learns that he has to participate more in life and not just observe everyone and live through them.

The way Charlie notices even the smallest details about everything is the reason why this book is so special. It doesn’t throw every single teenage stereotype in to your face which is more than refreshing and not only that but it also makes a little fun of those which is brilliant because it’s not something you see every day.

The book really makes you think your own life and it gives you a new perspective to look at this world but the most important thing is that it reminds you that you’re not only one which is good to remember once in a while. Because of that this is one of those books that you either take to yourself or if you can’t identify with Charlie don’t understand at all.

Characters are more real in this book than in any other book I have ever read. They are layered and they have this public side in them which make you thing you know the person and then there is this real person behind it which is sometimes hard to find in literature especially in book for teens. It shows that people who seem to have it all together really don’t and it proofs you’re stronger than you think you are and you can get through everything.

This is one of those books that everyone should have or should read because it’s life changing in a good way. It’s something you can go back over and over again and never get tired. It’s sign of a good book when you cry while reading it but can’t stop smiling after finishing  for days- or weeks.

”you see things. You keep quiet about them. And you understant. You’re a wallflower”

Full Stop

Alecia McKenzie’s short story Full Stop is a very impressive story about a cold relationship between mother and daughter. The short story consists of different letters which have been written by Grandma Scottie and her grandchild Carmen. The plot of the story is very simple, they write each others and tell about how their life’s going. In the story grandchild Carmen sends regularly letters and also money to her Grandma who uses the money for specific purposes. Carmen considers her Grandma as her biological mother because her own mother left her and her brother with their Grandma. The real mother is described as ”a snake in the grass” in the story so it tells a lot of their relationship.

Grandma’s character is a very religious person, which you can notice on the first Grandma’s letter. She always writes ”God bless” in the end of the letter. Grandma asks money that she doesn’t really need. In my opinion a good christian should live simply life and be satisfied with it. But however she is a good mother to Carmen because she takes care of her.

In the short story is mentioned Normy who is Carmen’s husband. Normy is called for ”hubby” by Grandma. Grandma and Carmen often writes about how Normy’s doing. For example Grandma often says: ”say hello to your hubby”. They also talks about some Richard who is Carmen’s brother. He doesn’t keep in touch with Grandma at all. He seems so busy and reluctant to write to his foster mother, Grandma Scottie. In the end of the story Richard finally writes to her how he’s doing but quite briefly I think.

Carmen has seen her biological mother only at once and her relationship with her seems to be quite complicated. Her mother wants to know her own daughter better but Carmen declines to contact with her. In the story Carmen’s mother tells the reason why she has left her children with Grandma. The reason of the event is a very different version from grandma’s. I believe that Grandma’s version is the right one cause the entire story has written in Grandma’s opinion so that version seems to be more reliable.

The story was quite interesting and easy to understand even if it had no punctuation in Grandma’s letters.

Fan fiction: CSI Miami

CSI Miami is an American police serie that ran from 2002 to 2012. CSI Miami is the first spin-off of CSI. CSI Miami follows a South Florida team. They use high tecnologic methods and old-fashioned police work to solve crimes. Lieutenant Horatio Caine is the head of the team. Horatio, his second in command detective Calleigh Duquesne, and their team which includes Erik Delko, Boa Vista, Wolfe, Tripp, and labraworkers solve crimes of investigators cultural crossroads of Miami.

Fan fiction tells about the time after the last episode, it tells about Erik Delko and Calleigh Duquesne. This is like the beginning of the evening’s show and after this starts theme song.

The whole team is gatered together. They are selebrating their friend and co-worker. It’s Natalia’s (Boa Vista) housewarming parties. It’s getting late and Derek is leaving with Calleigh because he’s driving her home. Nobody knows they live ’together’. And ’together’ I mean they both have their own flats but Derek basicly lives at Calleigh’s place.

When they got home surprise was waiting for them. The inside of the house was messed up. It looked like somebody was looking for somethig but couldn’t find it. They know that the person will come again to look what he or she couldn’t find earlier.

They start to collect evidences and Calleigh checks nothing’s missing. They saw how the person has broke a back door window and came in. Nothing was missing and that’s odd. Usually if someone breaks to your home they take something but this guy didn’t. Looks like someone just wanted to scarry them. They find barely nothing. This guy was so specific. All they could find was broken back door, messed up house and some kind of mark on the wall. The mark bothered Erik, it seems familiar but he couldn’t figure it out.

Erik desided to stay sleepover althought he had planned to sleep at home that night. He wanted to make sure Calleigh is ok. Ofcourse Calleigh could handle it by herslef if something happens but Erik is stubborn so she lets him stay. Nothing happened at night. The person must know that they were going to Natalia’s place and when they’d come back.

They both still have to go to work. Derek’s work shift starts earlyer that Calleigh’s. He didn’t want to leave Calleigh all by her self but he knows there’s no way how he could turn her head around. He leaves reluctantly. Right a way when Derek gets to work he starts to investigate the evidences. He works alone because this is private and he doesn’t want to raise a voice about it.

He found something. Now he knows why the mark looked so familiar. It’s from Russia or at least they have used it. Eriks father is part of the Russian mafia (also in the tv serie) and that’s where he has seen it.

Erik’s phone rings. It’s Calleigh, at least he thinks it is. Erik answears excited, he had found good news about the ’break in’ guy. And then he hears…. It’s not Calleigh. In the phone is defenitely a man who has a dark and deep voice with an strange accent. At that very moment Erik leaves to drive over Calleigh’s home. She isn’t there. He finds a note that is addressed to him on the table. He calls Horatio and tells Calleigh is gone, that she’s missing.. Someone must have kidnapped her.

Horatio answears: ’I am on way!’

Ice Age

Ice Age is a animated movie released on march 15, 2002.

The film is directed by Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha, the screenplay of film is done by Michael Berg and the story is written by Michael J. Wilson.

The most successful voice actors of the film are, Ray Romano (Manfred), Jogn Leguizamo (Sid), Denis Leary (Diego), Goran Visnjic (Soto) and Jack Black (Zeke). Best voiceplay is in my opinion made by Denis Leary.

Ice Age’s theme is surprisingly set on during the ice age, where a sloth named Sid, a woolly mammoth named Manny, and a saber-toothed tiger named Diego are forced to become unlikely heroes. The three reluctantly come together when they have to return a human child to its father while braving the deadly elements of the impending Ice Age.

Characters of the movie are as said above, Sid: a clumsy, annoying, slow moving, fast-talking and unpopular sloth. Diego who is a sarcastic sabretooth tiger who makes everyone watching the film smile. Manfred ”Manny” is a woolly mammoth who can be serious and emotional, but is otherwise caring and friendly.Scrat is a saber-toothed squirrel who is obsessed with collecting acorns, constantly putting his life in danger to obtain and defend them. He has his own stories in the film, independent of the main plot, which are parallel with the journeys of the other main characters, causing them to interact with him at times.

The films soundtrack is called ”Send Me on My Way” is written by Liz Berlin, John Buynak, Jim DiSpirito, Jim Donovan, Michael Glabicki, Patrick Norman and Jenn Wertz. The soundtrack is performed by band ”Rusted Root” which is in courtesy of ”The Island Def Jam Music Group”. The soundtrack is quite awesome fitting to the movie. It’s kind of country stylish on beginning of the movie, but on end it gets bit of sad.

Ice Age become a huge success right after it’s release which by years has leaded it to get four sequel’s and will in future, most likely get more of them.

Short story analysis: Full Stop

The story is mainly exchange of letters between woman named Carmen and her grandmother Scottie. Carmen lives in New York with her husband Normy, and her grandmother lives on some island. Grandma often asks Carmen to come visit her back home, but Carmen doesn’t have so much holidays that she could go. Carmen sends money to her Grandma almost every time she sends a letter to her but usually Grandma doesn’t use the money for the purpose it was intended to. For example Carmen sends her money to put burglar bars up to her windows but Grandma buys a new mattress instead because God will protect her from evil. The second time Carmen sends the money for burglar bars Grandma buys a dress for her neighbor’s funeral because she didn’t have anything else to wear. In the end of the short story Grandma finally agrees to put up the burglar bars maybe because there had been a robbery on her friend’s house or because she wants to please Carmen.

Grandma wants Carmen to contact with her mother but she refuses to do that because she doesn’t know what to say to her since Carmen has only seen her mother once. In Carmen’s opinion her Grandma is her mother because she raised her and her brother Richard. Their real mother lives in London but she comes to New York for a surgery and sees Carmen and acts like she is her long lost baby. Carmen’s mother tells that when she came to pick up Carmen and Richard their Grandma didn’t let them go but Grandma disclaims that. I think that when their mother came to pick them up Grandma was already so devoted for the kids that she couldn’t let them go. Maybe she as well thought that they were better whit her than with their real mother who was in her opinion “snake in the grass”. Grandma also says that “The Good Lord appointed me guardian—and look how fine you’ve turned out”.  I got the idea that Grandma was really stubborn and she is very religious and thinks that God will save him no matter what. She tells Carmen to pray for God and she often quotes the Bible. Grandma also asks Carmen to come and visit her and she appeals that she doesn’t live much longer on this earth before “He gathers her onto his bosom”.

Grandma asks often from Carmen that why hasn’t Richard sent a letter to her. And when he finally writes to Grandma he tells a lot of excuses why hasn’t he written and Grandma doesn’t believe those excuses. I think that Richard may have been busy and that’s why he hasn’t written to Grandma. Or maybe he just doesn’t want to read about church and God’s blessing etc.

Text was partly quite difficult to read because there were no commas or full stops on Grandma’s letters and that is probably the reason why the title of the short story is “Full stop”.
