Atonement

Atonement is a Drama Mystery film made in 2007 based on a bestseller novel of the same name written by Ian McEwan. The director of the film Joe Wright has done some very successful films during the last eight years. One of his most critically acclaimed films is Pride & Prejudice in which Keira Knightley plays the main character Elizabeth Bennet.

Keira Knightley reunites with director Joe Wright in Atonement in which she plays Cecilia Tallis, the elder one of the Tallis sisters. Cecilia is very protective of her little sister Briony, although she finds her very condescending. Younger Briony Tallis is played by Saoirse Ronan and later on by Romola Garai. James McAvoy was cast as Robbie Turner after Joe Wright had tried to work with him in the past. Robbie is the son of the Tallis charlady and he used to be very good friends with the Tallis children before noticing the class difference between them. Basically Atonement is a story about how an innocent young girl tells a lie which changes the lives of her beloved ones and how she desires for atonement. The young girl, Briony, lies about her sister being raped by Robbie whom she thinks has also raped her family friend Lola. Although she is unsure about what actually happened she still carries on with her lie. After this the two lovers Robbie and Cecilia are divided by this lie and also by the II World War, which is an important theme throughout the film.

The beautiful film score is composed by Italian composer Dario Marianelli, who has worked with Joe Wright in four of his films. Dario has composed different themes for the movie, but the most important one has to be little Briony’s theme which consists mostly of sounds from an old typewriter. It fits beautifully with the tension between all of the main characters.

The Setting of the film is magnificent. A certain scene in the film caught my eye: the beautiful but at the same time destructive shot of the Dunkirk evacuation during the II World War. Also the cast of the film was full of great British actors. I fell in love especially with James McAvoy’s performance because of his pure, relatable and touching interpretation as Robbie Turner. I got interested in the film because of Keira Knightley who is an old favorite of mine, but I also found new talent like Saoirse Ronan. She is very young in the film but her age didn’t prevent her from giving an amazing performance.

All and all this film made a great impression on me. The story, the beautiful score, the acting and the beautiful cinematography make it an enjoyable but also a devastating film to watch. The story will stay with you for a long time after watching it.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

The Hobbit: An Unexpected journey is an fantasy adventure film released on 13 december of 2012. It is the first part of the trilogy, which is based on the novel ”The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The film was directed by Peter Jackson, who also directed ”The Lord of the Rings”-trilogy, which is also based on Tolkien’s novel. The Hobbit is a prequel to The Lord of the Rings.
The Hobbit was filmed in New Zealand and many of those who worked on The Lord of the Rings, were also involved in this film. Some actors did also star their previous roles again in this film.
Those being, for an example, Ian McKellen as Gandalf the Grey, and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The new main actors consist Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, and Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield.
Weta Workshop created most of the props and Weta digital managed the visual effects. Soundtrack was composed by Howard Shore.

The story takes place in the fictional land of Middle Earth, where the Dwarwes have lost their capital town and the film follows a group of dwarwes who have accompanied with Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins.
Their mission is to kill the dragon that is staying inside the capital of the dwarwes and take their city back.
They meet all kinds of creatures and dangers while travelling across the Middle Earth. There is something bigger happening in the north as well, but it will not yet take a big part of the film.

I enjoyed the film a lot, and the lenght of the film didn’t bother me like it has bothered some of the reviewers. I didn’t get bored at all. The film was well made and it was quite accurate to the book and the feeling of the epic adventure was there.
It is easier to say what I didn’t like. I think that the film was made too much by using computer animation, and in some parts, it looked like it was closer to animation than a real movie. Many of the scenes were also made up in a very same way as there were scenes in the Lord of the Rings-trilogy.
The thing that troubled me the most was that the film was trying to be too much comedy. Even in the ”darker” scenes, there was something that was trying to get the viewer to laugh. There was also no blood at all, and it was really odd regarding the fact that the battle scenes was quite brutal besides that.
I would have liked a more serious view on the story. Now it seems that the film cannot decide whether it wants to be a comedy or a darker film. Now it doesn’t quite succeed on neither of these.
I wasn’t expecting anything like Lord of the Rings, so I’m still not disappointed on the film.
I liked The Hobbit a lot and I’m eager to see the following films of the series.

Full Metal Jacket

Full Metal Jacket

Full Metal Jacket was released in 1987. Stanley Kubrick has produced, directed and co-written it. Full Metal Jacket is a war film which tells about a platoon of U.S. Marines in the Vietnam War.

The plot is divided into two parts. First part shows how the platoon trains for Vietnam War. In the main role of first part are soldiers Leonard “Gomer Pyle” Lawrence (Vincent D’Onofrio) and “Joker” (Matthew Modine) and their Drill Instructor Hartman (R. Lee Ermey). Gomer Pyle is overweight and a little bit stupid. Joker helps him at training camp as much as he can. Hartman punishes other platoon for Gomer Pyle’s mistakes and other soldier starts to hate Gomer Pyle. Pyle gets mental problems and one night he shoots first Hartman and then himself.

In the second part of film Joker become a compact reporter and photographer. He interviews other soldiers about their opinions and experiences. His squad gets ambushed by sniper and few of his friends dies. When they finally found the sniper they notice that the shooter was a little girl. Joker tries to shoot her but his rifle gets stuck, but Jokers squad leader comes rescue him and shoot the girl.

Full Metal Jacket is not a war film which has only massive special effects and lots of shooting. But war scenes was still done great and shooting looked realistic.

Film director Stanley Kubrick made only 16 movies in his career, but some of them are truly masterpieces. His best known movies are: 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket. He have also won Oscar-award and have been nominated many times.

One special note about the cast is that the actor of Gomer Pyle was required to gain weight for the role and added 32 kilograms to his body before the movie filming. It took 9 months and it is the record for the largest weight gained for a role.

I liked about the movie a lot. Others are liked it also as we can see on IMDb’s rating 8,4/10 which is very good. Full Metal Jacket is truly one of the most legendries war films.

Black Swan

Black Swan is released in 2010 and it’s directed by Darren Aronofsky. It’s a psychological thriller. Black Swan has won many awards, for example Natalie Portman won the Best Actress award for the film. Black Swan is a story about a ballet dancer Nina who is so hard trying to be perfect but who slowly loses her mind.

The plot
The ballet studio, where Nina is dancing, is about to prepare a new version of the very famous ballet: Swan Lake. Of course there is a lot of jealousy among the dancers; everyone wants to be the Swan Queen. However, Nina gets the leading role. It would be her first big role in her career.
Gradually, Nina finds out that it’s really hard to play the fragile White Swan and the seductive Black Swan at the same time. Even though Nina is training like crazy, she isn’t satisfied with her dancing. The pressure increases all the time and Nina is having very hard times. Nina starts to have different kinds of symptoms. For example, she imagines seeing things around her. A couple of times she even thinks to have seen herself walking by or just staring at her. Also her skin starts to behave weirdly: inexplicable scratches, cuts and rush.
Nina becomes all the time more and more withdrawn. She won’t speak with her mother anymore. She wants to be alone and she spends all her time by training. Only perfection is good enough for Nina. Eventually, Nina is really paranoid. She thinks that other girls are trying to steal her role and she sees enemies all around her.
In the end Nina’s paranoia has become enormous. Nina wants so badly dance the role of the Swan Queen that she kills her biggest competitor – or thinks to have killed her. Nevertheless, soon Nina finds out the horrible truth: the one who is dying is Nina by herself. Despite the fact that she is about to die, Nina still wants to dance her role and gets up on the stage. In the very end Nina finally reaches the perfection. In the movie’s final scene Nina lies smiling on the ground after the perfect performance, unfortunately dying.

Characters
Nina Sayers is a young, dedicated ballet dancer. Nina lives with her mother, who has also been a dancer in the past. Nina practices all day long and aims to be perfect. It could even be said that Nina is a perfectionist. She has a very strict diet and her self-control is extremely high. Gradually it points out that it’s also her biggest problem. Nina doesn’t dare to let go which isn’t a good thing when the dance is concerned. I think that Nina’s character is psychologically very interesting. Nina’s symptoms refer to schizophrenia: she sees things which don’t exist, she hears voices and her sense of reality is failing.
Lily has just moved from San Francisco to New York. She is full of life and has a lot of passion that Nina doesn’t have even though her dancing isn’t technically as perfect as Nina’s. Nina never likes Lily very much and she sees her as a competitor.
The director of the ballet, Thomas Leroy, is a really demanding man. No matter how much Nina practices, nothing is good enough for him. Leroy thinks only the performance, not the dancers.

Casting
I think that Natalie Portman is a really good choice to act Nina. She brings all the character’s feelings up perfectly. Natalie Portman is also a delicate and graceful enough to act a ballet dancer. Natalie Portman just looks like an actual ballerina. Portman is a great success as the Swan Queen.
Mila Kunis as Lily is Nina’s biggest competitor. Kunis manages to reach just the right attitude, on the other hand as a nice “friend” but then again on the other hand as a wily competitor.

Soundtrack
Because Black Swan is all about dancing, of course music plays a huge role in this movie. Music makes everything seem more dramatic. I think that some scenes have even become quite scary and oppressive because of the certain music. Music has a great power in this movie. Soundtrack is composed by a British classical composer Clint Mansell.

Black Swan is absolutely the most upsetting movie I have ever seen but at the same time Black Swan is absolutely the best movie I have ever seen. There is something inexplicably addictive in this movie. I would recommend Black Swan especially for girls. If you want to watch a little bit different movie instead of one of those typical movies with happy ever after, you should definitely watch Black Swan.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan is a graphic fiction movie about small group of soldiers of the United States of America. This movie is very straight with the horrors and happenings of the World War II and shows completely bloody and horrific scenes that truly show what was going on then. In Saving Private Ryan the action is centered to mission of few American soldiers.

The movie is written by Robert Rodat who was born in the United States of America and is citizen of the same country. Saving Private Ryan was released in July 24, 1998. Thinking that this movie is now fifteen years old, you can’t help but notice that the special effects and the way the movie is executed is very magnificent and realistic despite of its relatively old age.

Overall the execution of this film is magnificent. The cast is very known today here is few for example: Tom Hanks playing the role of Company leader John H. Miller, Matt Damon as Private First Class James Francis Ryan, Vin Diesel as Private First Class Adrian Caparzo, Edward Burns as Private First Class Richard Reiben and Tom Sizemore as Technical Sergeant Mike Horvath.

The filming itself, including the camerawork, music, special effects, the props etc. are so well done that you can’t notice a single flaw in the story or the making of the movie.

The plot of the movie is quite simple, Captain of United States army and company commander John H. Miller and his company was given a task to go fetch none other than Private First Class James Francis Ryan of Baker Company from the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division from France due to horrible incidences when his three brothers we’re all killed in the very same war he was fighting himself. James Ryan’s mother was telegrammed earlier that same day of the deaths of her three sons. General George Marshall was informed of this same sad story and decided that a rescue mission was necessary to retrieve the only son that was alive of this family and send him to see his mother unharmed.

This task was if possible even harder than you might think, because the whereabouts of this one exact soldier was still one big mystery. So did this little group of experienced soldiers begin their journey with them not so experienced private Upham, his attendance in this dangerous quest was very great because he worked as a translator to others when they are in need of knowledge of French or German language. Throughout this journey of theirs all but one of this squad questioned the reasonability of this act because many lives could be and was sacrificed to save one. Respected commander Miller kept his company in one and remained calm the whole journey. They headed to Neuville and there they we’re ambushed by a lonely German sniper and that lead to a loss of one man. That was tough for the whole group but there was no turning back and they carried on searching for Private Ryan and they found him almost right after that sorrowful episode. After telling Private Ryan that the meaning of their quest, they we’re informed that this was the wrong James Francis Ryan. After getting over the confusion this misunderstanding lead to, they carried on trying to find the right James Ryan who was missing.

From there the party headed to Ramelle and they noticed a small German military post with small amount of soldiers. The company commander Miller makes a hard decision and decides to attack the German. They succeed to conquer the post but with that small victory they lost again one man and this loss lead to big decrease of morale in the group. Decision to let the one alive German soldier go didn’t exactly lift the group morale much more than did the death of their companion. Again the leader of this quest remained calm and was able to influence his group with positive energy and their trip was ready to continue.

They finally arrive to Ramelle and there they find the right James Francis Ryan. But Private Ryan surprisingly decides that he wanted to stay there and defend his post with his own group. Miller and his group was furious of this because now all of their work and deaths of their friends we’re useless. But they all had now bigger things to worry about a battalion of German soldiers we’re approaching their defend post at Ramelle bridge. Miller decides to help defend this bridge with his and his soldier’s life. They begin planning their tactics and when the German soldiers arrive with tanks and light infantry they are able to prevent the German from crossing the bridge by blowing it up with dynamite. This victory didn’t come cheap since everyone but Private Ryan and few of other American soldiers are left alive from this battle. That battle of the bridge was a majorly important to the happenings of the World War II.

Saving Private Ryan was very dramatic yet so heroic and touching tale of soldiers of the United States of America and is amazingly known and respected war-movie. Watching this movie generates genuine sorrow for the deaths of this war and you can only be grateful for these relatively peaceful times in Europe.

Heather Ledger (Joker) was an Australian actor and director. He performed roles in Australian TV but left for united states develop his film career. He had time to act in six movies before he died. Most famous of them was jokers role at dark knight, every critic praised his performance amazing, and he won the Oscar prize for best man supporting actor. Actually he was second man who won the prize after his dead, because he died few days before dark knight premiere. He died overdose of sleeping pills. Some ones said that he had some kind of mental illness too.

Christian Bale (Bruce Wayne, Batman) is English actor who have been Batman at three different movie(Batman begins, Dark knight, Dark knight rises) and he’s also known at American Psycho movie

Aaron Eckhart(Harvey Dent) is an American actor. He Left high school without graduating but passed it later. His most known performance is Harvey Dent from movie Dark knight.

Dark knight soundtracks were by same named album, album contain soundtracks from part of the movie. Album based previous Batman movie (Batman begins). It won the Grammy award for best score soundtrack album for a motion picture

Special effects wanted being most practical effect rather than computer graphics because the cost is about the same but it looks different. Computer effects were used only if there was no another option. Everything that had to blew up, really blew up.

Bad Boys

The movie I chose was American action comedy film Bad Boys, which was directed by Michael Bay. Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Téa Leoni, Tchéky Karyo, Theresa Randle and Joe Pantoliano were starring. The movie was released on April 7th, 1995 and it’s running time is 118 minutes. The movie turned out as blockbuster, the budget was 19 million dollars and box office was 141 million dollars worldwide. In 2003 a sequel, Bad Boys II came out.

The movie’s plot tells about two American detectives, Marcus Burnett (Martin Lawrence) and Mike Lowrey (Will Smith), who are best friends and they work in the narcotics division in Miami-Dade Police Departmend. The detectives are ordered to solve a case about stolen heroin, which value is 100 million dollars.

Special effects of the movie were quite poor, only few explosions and chasing scenes. The explosions weren’t really realistic and chasing scenes felt like they’d never end. But on the other hand, the movie is a comedy film and in my opinion in that genre, special effects and ”boring” chase scenes aren’t so necessary at all, in fact I think they are meant to be like that and of course, that saved a lot of money. The movie includes lots of shooting scenes which are salted with a great sense of humor.

If you ask me, the movie’s stars, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence are probably the best choice for starring in this very film. They are able to empathize on their roles and express their lines. The director Michael Bay didn’t like the script and often allowed Smith and Lawrence to improvise while the cameras were rolling. I think that surely resulted in better lines.

The Terminal

I selected the movie The Terminal. It is an American drama comedy which showed up in 2004. The Director is Steven Spielberg and screenwriters are Andrew Niccol, Jeff Nathanson and Sacha Gervasi. Tom Hanks has the main role in this movie. The terminal is a successful movie with sympathetic story.

The story is quite simple and easy to understand. Tom Hanks as Viktor Navorski is a man who arrived in John F Kennedy’s airport in New York. Viktor comes from an Eastern european country, Krakozhia. After he left his country war broke out.  Now he is in JFK airport and he doesn’t have all these permissions that he needs to access New York city. He can’t come back to his homecountry because of revolution in his home nation of Krakozhia. Due to the civil war, the United States no longer recognizes Krakozhia as a sovereign nation, so now he is a man without country.
Viktor instead lives in the terminal, carrying his luggage and a Planters peanut can.

He meets many different people and soon he comes to know everybody. At first speaking with other people was difficult, because he could only speak his mother tongue russian. But soon he learned to speak little bit english, so he could communicate with other. In the airport happened this and that. One day he met a woman, whose name is Amelia (Catherine Zeta-Jones). Amelia is flight attendant. During the film Viktor and Amelia are talking a lot and they have good time together.
Viktor explains to Amelia that the purpose of his visit to New York is to get an autograph from the tenor saxophonist Benny Golson. The peanut can Viktor carries contains ”A Great Day in Harlem” photograph. His father was a jazz enthusiast who had discovered the famous portrait in a Hungarian newspaper in 1958, and vowed to get an autograph of all 57 of the jazz musicians featured on the photograph. Benny Golson’s name is the only, which is missing.
After nine months of living in the JFK terminal Viktor gets a one-day emergency visa to travel within the U.S. Viktor leaves the airport and with a taxi he goes to the Ramada Inn where Benny Golson is performing. Viktor gets the autograph and now the collection complete.
The film is inspired by the 17-year-stay of Mehran Karimi Nasseri in the Charles de Gaulle International Airport, Paris, France from year 1988 to 2006.

In the other important roles besides Tom hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones play for example Barry Shabaka Heley, Chi McBride, Diego Luna, Eddie Jones, Kumar Pallana, Stanley Tucci, Zoe Saldana.

The Camerawork of the movie is high quality and impressive. There is no special effects in the movie and that makes it realistic. That’s the reason why I like it. John Williams has done music for the movie. He made soundtracks for nearly every single scene of the film.
