Macbeth The Graphic Novel

The original Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, was created in the beginning of the 1600.This graphic novel was produced at 2008.  Macbeth is very famous play, based on the Scotland’s king Macbeth’s life. The graphic novel version is presented at its original and unabridged format. Its fully colored and extraordinary entertaining novel. Novel is adapted by the John McDonald, designed by Jo Wheeler and the character design is produced Jon Haward. William Shakespeare is perhaps the most well known playwright in the history and the play of Macbeth is considered one of his most darkest tragedies. Other famous tragedies from William Shakespeare are for example: Hamlet, and Othello.

The novels theme is, as I mentioned before, tragedy. And thats exactly how I saw it when I was reading. A lot of action-scenes and the whole atmosphere of the novel is tense and treacherous.

Though the novel was in the graphic form, like the comic book, it was extremely hard to read and assimilate what you have read, because of the language. For example: ”I will not yield, to kiss the ground before young Malcolm’s feet and to be baited with the rabble’s curse. Though Birnam wood be come to dunsinane, and thou oppos’d being of no woman born, yet I will try the last: before my body I throw my warlike shield”. And thats why I don’t recommend this novel for people who hadn’t read any this kind of literature in english before.

The novel was after all insanely great. It took me over two weeks to read the novel through, though it has less than 200 pages and a lot of pictures. That was mainly because of the hard language and strange words, and of course because I’m a lazy reader. But after all that reading was chiefly pleasant experience, and it was delightful to read a classic literature in the form of comic book. I would gladly do it again, and I truly recommend it for anybody who is interested about reading high-class literature in the modern form.

The Hobbit or There And Back Again

The Hobbit is a fantasy novel written by an english author, J.R.R. Tolkien. Considered as the father of contemporary fantasy, he aimed at creating a whole new world for his books. The book was released in 1937, and it has stood the test of time.

Tolkien introduces us to Middle-Earth and the small and jubilant Hobbits. The story starts off in the Shire: the home of Hobbits. Hobbits aren’t really fond of adventures. They like to live in peace and potter around in their everyday lives. Bilbo, our main character, is visited by Gandalf, a great wizard. He needs a burglar to steal the symbol of authority, the Arkenstone, from a dragon. Therefore, the themes of this book are the safe ordinary life, versus new experiences and adventures.

Bilbo is aversed upon the thought of joining an adventure. The dwarves doubt that the small hobbit has the spirit in him. Bilbo proves them wrong by promising to do what is told, just so they would think of bilbo as a fierce and a bold hobbit. Bilbo has two sides. The first is the brave and adventurous side, from the line of the Tuk family. The other side is earth-bound and peaceful, from the line of Baggins. Bilbo’s relationship with Gandalf, the lingering wizard, is warm and almost fatherly to Bilbo towards the book’s end.

The dwarves are a warmhearted and a proud race. They are friendly with Bilbo, like naturally with all hobbits in Tolkien’s books. Their favorite things to do are singing, protecting their reputation and eating.

I myself liked the book very much. The narration drags you into Middle-Earth. This book has pretty much everything: tension and fright, drama and action.

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Stevensons

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is Robert Stevensons most known novel. It was originally published in 1886. The book was psychologically profound, like many of his books, even to the extent that its popularity has been going on for a long time after the death of Stevenson. Stevenson were Scottish writer and he lived 1850-1894.

The main character is of course the honored, friendly and upright Dr. Jekyll who has a lot of friends, one of whom is a lawyer Mr. Utterson whose point of view the story proceeds. D. Jekyll have also a bad side, Mr. hyde, who is just completely the opposite to Mr Hyde. Dr. Jekyll is a vicious and inhuman, and he differs from Mr. Hyde even of the appearance: Jekyll is long and vigorous while the Hyde posture is stooped to fit his personality (at the time it was though that apparance would represent personality). Hyde is result of Jekylls laboratory experimenta which result he was able to release his evil side. Of course something went wrong and Jekyll can not control himself from become Hyde.
We follow the progres of plot through the eyes of Mr. Utterson who gets worried of Jekylls new companionship with Mr. Hyde.

This novella is a classic horror novel of struggle between good and evil in human mind and it leads to many questions of humanity and our tendency of evil.
I enjoyd reading this book. I liked the fact that this was a bit like a horror story but without blood and pieces of bodys all over the places that you cant miss in the current horror storys and movies. Horror was creaded by ambiace and skillfully describing characters and events not with slaughtered humans.
Even though the book is written more than a hundred years ago it is still timeless and modern. I might recommend this book for people who dont mind that text is not easiest to reading becouse of dated language.

The Princess Diaries Take Two

“The Princess Diaries” book is written by Meg Cabot in 2000. The book is the second book in the series and there’s six more. The film “The princess diaries 2”, is telling about the same princess, but it’s not related to the film.

The book has written like a diary. The princess, Mia, is writing a diary about her daily life and the reader gets to know her very well. She writes thoroughly about her many akward moments that happens every day and her feelings about other people. The reader gets to know all the things that she has done in that day.

Mia was a shy and normal girl and many of her school didn’t know her. One day her grandmother (called granmere), told her that her father is a prince of Genovia and she is a princess. After that, Mia’s life changed and she always has a few bodyguards with her and Mia goes everywhere with a limusin. Mia has to learn to cope with puplic life because she has a lot of interwievs in TV. Sometimes they don’t go as they should and she starts talking about weird things. And for example, she prematurely announces in national TV the secret that her mother is pregnat. She tries to adapt to princess life but sometimes she wants to be that normal girl who she has been before.

The main characters of the film are Princess Mia and her best friend Lilly which Mia tells important things and secrets. Lilly is a flashy person and she always cheers Mia up. Other characters are Lilly’s brother Michael who is Mia’s secret crush and Mia’s mother and grandmother. Mia has different relationships with all of them and she tries to get agreement with all. Sometimes she doesn’t know how to combine princess life with normal life. It was easy to me identify with Mia because she is the same age girl as I am. And she has the same problems as we all teenagers have, except the princess thing.

The book was really easy and nice to read because the glossary of the text was easy. And if I didn’t understand some word, it didn’t matter because I still got the point. Maybe if I haven’t seen the films of “The Princess Diaries”, it could have been harder to read. I would recommend the book to teenage girls because they can identify with the main character best.

Kanojo ni Naru Hi – Becoming a Girl Day

The book I read is called Kanojo ni Naru Hi (2013). It is manga and the author of it is Ogura Akane. She has also written and drawn other supernatural, scifi and romance mangas such as Dr. Rabbit and Genius House.

The book is about the future Japan where people start to have a condition where their bodies start to release the opposite sex’s hormones (basically men become partially women and women become partially men) This condition is called emergence and it usually strikes when you’re young. The book is somewhere in between scifi and supernatural. I haven’t come across any other book that is similar to this one.

The protagonists of the manga are Miyoshi and Miyama. They have been best friends since they were kids and Miyoshi always challenges Miyama to various competitions between friends.

The story begins with Miyama getting emergence. Miyama’s condition is particularly difficult for Miyoshi because of his gynephobia (fear of women). Even though the situation is weird Miyama wants to help Miyoshi with his fear of women. He challenges Miyoshi in to a touching competition where Miyoshi is forced to touch Miyama in order to win the competition. However Miyoshi starts to have mixed feelings for Miyama because he/she is the first girl he’s ever been close to. Things start to get rough when Miyama realizes he has feelings for Miyoshi too and refuses to take medication for his condition.

One of the chapters is written from Miyama’s perspective but the rest of the story is told from Miyoshi’s perspective.

I am fairly used to read manga. I liked this manga but the topic was quite confusing. Apart from that I think the plot is good even though the ending was a disappointment. I found it quite easy to read manga in english even though some of the scifi-terms were foreign to me. I guess it’s because english isn’t my first language.

The Last Spin

The Last Spin ( ~1960 ) written by well-known author Evan Hunter aka Ed McBain. McBain has written screenplay for Hitchcock’s movie The Birds. McBain’s genres are crime and mystery fiction.

The Last Spin is a thrilling and dramatic short story, which is story-like , including clear beginning and ending and doesn’t really leave too many ”loops” to figure out. The time interval of the short story is brief, which would be only few scenes in a movie. The story focuses on dialog and Russian roulette between two young men.

In the story Danny and Tigo are playing Russian roulette to settle down conflict between their clubs. They do not know each other, they were simply chosen from their clubs. The boys are minors and most likely  immigrants. Recruiting or kidnapping minors  isn’t new thing in gangs. Although the boys need to settle down the conflict and are considered as enemies , they get to know each other and their relation warms towards the end.

There isn’t much to tell about the plot, but Danny and Tigo are lucky and they come in conclusion that they aren’t the ones who should solve this conflict. They decide to give the last spin for the cylinder and end the game. Both boys seem to enjoy each other’s company and plan to meet after the game.

McBain’s  writing style is rather pleasant to read and it has many interesting word choices such as ” my old lady ” and ” i’m turkey ”, but this  ” old lady ” makes it harder to analyse. It is hard to say are they minors or not. Old lady can mean girlfriend and also mother, but it is also said in the text ” old country ” which means your parents  home town or country. Otherwise text and language is easy to understand.

The Last Spin is truly exciting short story and reminds me of Breaking Bad  -televison series

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland

I read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland book. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is an 1865 novel written by English author Lewis Carroll. His real name is Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. Lewis Carrol is  an English written, logician, mathematician, Anglican deacon and photographer. That’s why in this story plays very much with logic. Because in this story is logic also older people can read  this book even though that book is a children’s book.

That story tells of a girl named Alice. When she is outside with her sister Alice falls down a rabbit hole into a fantasy world. There is fantasy world live peculiar and anthropomorphic creatures. Alice adventures with creatures and her happens so weird things in a fantasy world. When she eat or drink something in a fantasy world she grow up or contract. Whole place is so weird and that’s why Alice come homesick. Luckily all’s well that ends well.

I think that book is not so good even though the book is very famous. It is boring and I don’t like it even though in this story is logic it is still childish. The end is very predictable and a little dumb. But children definitely like it. Without logic this book will be even boring, but the logic do this book a little interesting because you have to apply your brain that you understand what happening. Language in this story is not very difficult but there is some old words whiches don’t apply anymore. Though I don’t like this book I still recommend read Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. If you don’t like read you can watch it because Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland is also film.

The last spin

Evan Hunter is the author of The Last Spin. His the most famous achievement is The Birds movie script. Protagonists in this dramatic short story are two men, Danny and Tigo. The story is full of  deep breaths, sweat and excitement.

In the story Danny and Tigo belong to different clubs. Their clubs had had disagreements and the clubs had settled that they solve problems with one way or with Russian roulette. Neither of them would want to be in that situation. Venue of the story is the basement room, where Danny and Tigo squeeze the trigger by turns until one of them is dead. If story has this kind of plot, it has to be thrilling and that’s what it was. The plot keeps the reader all the time awake. The reader must guess at all the time what will happen next and never you really know what it is.

Even though the story is based on a talk beetween two people, it is still so interesting that it makes you to read it on and in my case only very few author has done it. In the story Tigo and Danny see each other so different kind of persons, but when the story progresses they realize how similar they really are. That is one of the most fascinating things in the plot.

The text of the story has written with so fabulous way that it was actually pleasure to read it. After all text was very difficult to read, because there was so much terminology and protagonists discussed with very powerfull slang. When I read text, I had to focus entirely to reading.

The Last Spin

I read Evan Hunter’s short story The Last Spin that was published in 1960. Hunter’s indigenous name is Salvatore Lombino, but he is also known by many other stage names, for example Ed McBain, Richard Marsten, Hunt Collins, Curt Cannon and Ezra Hannon. He has written a manuscript to Alfred Hitchcock’s movie The Birds and hundreds of other books.

The Last Spin is a short story and it tells about two boys who belong to the opposite clubs and they are forced to settle an argument over territory. The way to settle that is not very beautiful. The boys are playing Russian Roulette, so they can avoid big street boppins. At first they are real enemies. But the closer they come to the end the closer the get to each other. Boys notice that they have quite a lot of things in common. Alternately they put the gun to their temple and squeezed the trigger. After every squeezing the mode became more relaxed and deeper. But as always, in the end things didn’t go like boys planned.

The main characters, and the only characters, in the story are these two boys from different gangs. Tigo, the boy from the club of green jackets, is always the boy who starts conversation and also the game. He seems to be more experienced in this kind of things. Danny instead belongs to the club of blue jackets. He is more reserved and also afraid of what will happen. But of course he can’t show Tigo his suspicion. The story is placed in the beginning 1960’s in America where different gangs were very mutual phenomenon.

Language in this short story isn’t very difficult but there are some strange and new words. But the same words could be found all over the text so after you have checked them once from the dictionary, the end of the text is quite easy to read. The story is anyway good and interesting, but you need to read it twice to understand it, because at first you have no idea what is the text about.

Chobits (vol. 1)

Chobits is a bit romantic sci-fi manga, japanese comic and it’s published in 2004. Story and art is made by Clamp.

In future’s Tokyo, there everybody has an own persocom, humanoid computer. They are popular because they can do what ever you like, and that’s why people doesn’t be with each other any more.

One day Hideki, boy who lives alone in tiny shabby house, found a persocom from garbage. He took it home and named her Chi, because it’s the first word she said. Then they start they very own adventure. Hideki’s friend Shimbo tried to help him find something about Chi, but they can’t find anything. Chi’s firewalls are too strong for Shimbo’s persocom Plum. Shimbo leaded Hideki to 12-year-old boy, Minoru, who knows almost everything about persocoms. Even Minoru’s persocom Yuzuki tried to pass Chi’s firewalls, they found out that Chi’s programs are safe behind many encryptions. They started to believe that Chi may be Chobit, a very rare and unique persocom. Many believes that Chobits are just a myth, but what other Chi could be?

Main characters are Hideki and Chi. Hideki is an ordinary boy, who is not great or bad in school. He is kind and very worried about Chi, who can not even talk correctly. Hideki wants to help Chi remember her past. Chi is very much like an oversized little child. She learns fast and wants to be with Hideki all the time.         Other important characters are Minoru, Shimbo and their persocoms Yuzuki and Plum.

This story takes place in Tokyo. Mostly the characters are at Hideki’s house or somewhere near to it. Also Hideki goes school and they visit Minoru’s mansion a lot.

I think this book is very awesome because it’s drawn amazingly and it has an interesting plot, it’s getting more and more exciting altough everybody knows it has the happy ending. Characers are so like real people and that’s what makes that sci-fi story a bit more real. I don’t usually read sci-fi, but this is a more like romantic and comedy, so I simply like it.
