Animal Farm

(George Orwell, England 1945, USA 1946)

Animal Farm is a novel published in the end of World War 2. It’ a fairy story about farm where animals take control and force their human owners away. Orwell, who resisted the ideology of Stalinism and dictatorship, made the novel reflect actions in the Russian Revolution. It was fun to read how connections between Russian headmen and animalistic counterparts summed up. The book’s original name was Animal Farm: A Fairy Story but it was later changed to Animal Farm so adults could feel more comfort to read it.

On Manor Farm, an aging boar called Old Major enlightens other animals to get rid of human leaders and prepare for the rebellion. The words of the revolutionary song “Beasts of England” gets stuck to everyone’s head. After Major passes away, animals somehow manage to drive drunken Mr. Jones from the farm. A new ideology, animalism, is born. Animals agree with Seven Commandments, the most important being: All animals are equal”. At first everything seems to be fine. Animals manage to farm and hold the intruders off. Soon howerer, two young pigs named Napoleon and Snowball take control. Eventually there can be only one leader and the loser is never seen again. Things start to get worse when pigs prioritize themselves and act more and more like humans…

There are no real protagonist in Animal Farm although certain characters appear in the text more than others. Berkshire boar Napoleon could be called the main villain. He reflects soviet dictator Joseph Stalin. “Traitor” Snowball is the second seeker of the leadership, later driven from farm by Napoleon. Like Stalin did force Trotsky away. Squeeler is pig and Napoleon’s enforcer who keeps the propaganda up. Boxer is loyal and strong horse, example of ideal, hard working member.

The book
messed with my mind nicely. In the beginning animals taking over farm and surviving themselves felt silly but later the story got much darker. Animals making executions and drinking alcohol brings up thought about how ruthless humans can be.

Casino Royale

I read the book Casino Royale, which is written by Ian Fleming. The book was published in 1953. As everyone knows Ian Fleming has also written many other James Bond books, in total 14 novels. He has also written two other books Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Thrilling Cities.

The genre of the book is spy fiction. Main characters are James Bond, Le Chiffre and Vesper Lynd. Other characters are Felix Leiter, Rene Mathis, M, Miss Moneypenny, Q and Gettler. Le Chiffre is the villain of the book who tries to win money by gambling.

The plot: Le Chiffre is a Soviet Union agent who has wasted secret fund. He is afraid that Soviet SMERSH foundation is going to kill him and decide to gamble to get money. 007 is sent to gamble against Le Chiffre. Lynd, MI6 agent Mathis and CIA agent Leiter joins Bond to help him on his mission. Le Chiffre, Bond and other players play baccarat. Bond loses all his money but he gets back to the table because Leiter gives Bond 30 million francs. 007 is threaten to be killed but he is able to continue the game. Bond beats Le Chiffre but he kidnaps Lynd. Bond tries to chase them but he swerves off the road and Le Chiffre kidnaps him too. He tortures Bond to get his money back. SMERSH agent comes and kills Le Chiffre. Bond wakes up in hospital and afterwards decides to marry Lynd. One day Bond finds Lynd dead and Lynd tells in a letter that she was Soviet agent. Lynd made a suicide that SMERSH wouldn’t kill Bond.

The Language was a little bit challenging but still understandable. The story is told by an omniscient narrator. The book was really good and it’s hard to say which is better the novel or the film. It was the first Bond I have read and I think I should read more of them. It was a little bit harder and slower to read an English novel than a Finnish one.

Coraline

Coraline is a fast pace, exciting and timeless fantasy novel written by Neil Gaiman in 2002. It has been acclaimed by many and has also won the top place on several ”Best Book”-lists. It’s popularity raised even more as it was adapted into animation in 2009. Coraline is relatively new novel even though it very much seems like an old classic for younger readers – despite modern technology is somewhat present in this book, such as television and computer are mentioned. However, I think that Coraline’s adventures are so peculiar that they aren’t bound with any period of time.

Coraline tells about a girl, after whom the book is entitled, who loves to explore and whose family has just moved to an old house devided into four apartments. On a rainy day, Coraline’s not allowed to play outside so she starts to explore the house instead. She counts all the doors, since her father advised her to. She finds a locked door which begins to interest her but as Coraline’s mother unlocks it, she sees that there’s only a brick wall behind. This doesn’t however kill her interest in it and as the story proceeds, Coraline finds that the brick wall has disappeared one night and there’s a long dark corridor opening in front of her. At the end of the corridor there’s another door which leads to a house, copy of her real home though not exactly identical – everything’s a tad bit better, or so does she think at first. Coraline meets her other mother and her other father who are like parents she has dreamed of. However, there’s a slite curiosity in her other parents – they have buttons sewn to their eyes. The other parents want Coraline to live with them instead of her real parents and sew buttons to her eyes as well. Coraline challanges the other mother to play a game in which Coraline has to find the lost souls of her parents or else she’ll lose her own soul to her other mother. But since the other mother is cruel and loves to win, she tries to cheat. Thus Coraline goes through a battle agains her and is confronted with challanges.

”Flee, while there’s still air in your lungs and blood in your vains and warmth in your heart. Flee while you still have your mind and soul.”

Who or more alarmingly what the other mother actually is, stays as a mystery. Why does she exist? Furthermore, the question why there is such a place in general where she lives, wont be solved.

The narrator in this book is non-participant and limited to the protagonist’s perspective. However, it doesn’t describe Coraline’s feelings and thoughts in detail or regard them as a crusial piece of information. This begs a question whether Coraline is actually so one-dimentional or is this just due to the minimalistic amount of images created from Coraline’s internal dynamics. This is probably why there wasn’t really a character I would’ve identified with.

Given the fact that the narrator makes Coraline maybe a bit ambiguous, the protagonist seems very baffled by the world around her; she doesn’t quite understand it but surprisingly she just acknowledges the weird occasions she experiences but never questions them outloud or demand anwers. Coraline is remote from other people and they all seem to live in their own worlds inside their heads; they’re isolated from each other – not concretely but as far as communication is concerned. Coraline asks something from her mother, for instance, but never gets an answer for the question she presented or, at least, nobody bothers to answer. This may cause annoyance among readers.

Although Coraline is a bit naive, she’s also very clever and I feel like sometimes the reason why she doesn’t bother to question things is just because she has more interesting things to do and see than look for answers for her astonishment from the people around her who probably don’t understand them either. Coraline turns out to very be brave for her age and can push herself to her limits when needed. In this sense, Coraline evolves as the story proceeds.

Although the book is pretty much a one-man show of Coralines, there’s also another character, a mysterious black cat, which involves her adventures. The cat, which I personally adored, is like Coraline’s helper; it advices her (yes, the cat can speak when it’s on ”the other side” of the house) and I feel like it supports her to be brave. It has always something unpredictable to say and kinda has its own laws – it may suddently disappear or emerge out of nowhere.

The book has a simple and clear storyline, and in my opinion, written only to be told, shared to the readers and nothing more. It has no filling. I was longing for the situations to be described and made more interesting through detailed text. Though, these aspects do sometimes occure but mostly when the book is alredy approaching it’s end. Events in this book are followed one after the other in a continuos pace. The story proceeds quickly and smoothly, but in my opinion, that sacrifices the aspects which bring dimension to the story, or else, the ever so unique and fascinating story stays muted and doesn’t really reach the point of greatness it has the potential for.

Coraline is an easy read since it’s for younger readers. Therefore, even though I’m tempted to say it was a bit of a disappointment, the not so winding language is expected – though I didn’t think it was going to be this easy. Also, books which evoke a wide spectrum of feelings and are multidimensional are usually the ones I prefer, but Coraline sadly didn’t have those aspects. The library didn’t have the books available I so wanted to read and some of the authors I was interested in were simply missing, such as Fitzgerald, Lockhart and Doerr. But if you’re looking for a thrilling, adventurous novel just to past the time, then Coraline could be for you. It’s also very likely to forgot that you’re reading this novel in english.

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby is a novel by Scott F. Fitzgerald. It was Fitzgerald’s third novel, written in 1925. The book gained popularity in the 50’s after the author’s death and became a classic. Nowadays the novel is often read in American high-schools and universities. Fitzgerald’s other works, including his four other novels and numerous short stories, haven’t become as popular as The Great Gatsby.

The novel takes place in New York in the 1920’s where the wealthy and stylish upper-class enjoy jazz and each other’s company. Even though love and morals are a big theme in this book, I wouldn’t still call this a love story. Gatsby really reminds me of this other famous American classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, which I read a couple of months ago. Both novels have a very similar style and a lot of different themes to play with.

The Great Gatsby is narrated by a World War-veteran Nick Carraway, who lives in a fictional island called West Egg. Nick is an observer and he doesn’t really seem to participate when he’s out with his friends. This leaves plenty of time for a define description of Jay Gatsby, the mysterious millionaire, who everyone seems to be obsessed with. And when I say everyone, I literally mean it- everyone talks about him all the time, whether he’s around or not, whether they know him or not. It is mentioned over and over again in this book that he might have an awful secret, that he might have killed a man or that there’s something shady about his money. These things are often discussed in Gatsby’s huge parties, which he throws every weekend.

Nick’s cousin Daisy and his husband Tom are few of the main characters in this book. Tom cheats on Daisy with Myrtle, who is unhappy about her own marriage with a car mechanic. Daisy and Gatsby used to have a romantic relationship, but they broke up because Daisy wasn’t happy with Gatsby not having enough money at the time. It’s easy to say that Tom is the bad guy of the story. He’s hypocrite, mean and breaks Myrtle’s nose right in the beginning. He doesn’t respect Daisy at all.

The story really starts off when Nick is awkwardly introduced to Gatsby at one of his parties. He and Gatsby hit it off and become friends. Soon it is revealed that Gatsby is still in love with Daisy, and wants Nick to set them up. After an awkward afternoon Daisy and Gatsby become somewhat lovers. The novel ends with a tragic hit-and-run and a murder.

The language is old and very specific. At some points it got so confusing that it was hard to even know what was going on without reading a chapter two times. I just simply didn’t have time for that, so I decided to think that something that is not understandable doesn’t even want to be understood and probably won’t matter at all. It was a good decision, because as the story went on it became more understandable.  The overly detailed describing that Fitzgerald uses a lot in this novel is probably one of the reasons why Americans don’t enjoy reading. If I had had this book to be read when I was fourteen, I guess I would have been scarred for life and started to hate books because of this a very boring one. I mean, the plot is great and I really enjoyed the jazz and the bobs, but sometimes it makes you to want to skip a chapter when Fitzgerald starts to describe someone’s voice or appearance. Like, seriously, I get that someone likes the words “husky” and “slender” but why to use them all the time?

Even though the vocabulary drove me crazy, I am still pretty impressed by this book. I think that loneliness is a big theme in this story. Gatsby used a lot of money to entertain people, who didn’t even bother to attend his funeral. Even with a lot of friends around him he longed for someone else, Daisy. It still annoyed me how people always had suspicions about Gatsby. Why can’t someone just simply enjoy throwing parties and seeing people having fun? Why does there always have to be something fishy about it?

This novel is ninety years old and it shows. People are more modest, men complement each other and a woman is usually introduced as someone’s wife or fiancée (and if not, they sure make a huge deal about it). The class society was still a pretty big thing for people those days and Gatsby belongs to one of those people who succeeded at climbing up the classes. This novel really needs some respect for making the former poor guy a generous millionaire.

Reading a novel in English was weird for me, because I haven’t ever done it before. I love the Finnish language and enjoy reading and writing it, so reading a whole book in another language was a bit sad. I first thought that the reading would take a lot of time, but it soon became very natural to me. I definitely didn’t pick an easy book, but the Great Gatsby was still a happy surprise.

Alice in Wonderland (2010)

My film is Alice in Wonderland. I chose the new version because i like it more than the original, animation one. The film is produced in 2010 and the director is Tim Burton. It is a fantasy movie and it is based on Alice in wonderland by Lewis Carrol. Also one reason why I love this film is because my favorite actor, Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter) , is acting on it. Other actors are Mia Wasikowska (Alice), Anne Hathaway (White Queen) and Helena Bonham Carter (Queen of hearts)  and bunch of animated characters. Almost the whole film is shot in Wonderland. The animation is fantastic and unbelievably beautiful. Whole Wonderland seems so realistic although it is so unrealistic. It is hard to explain but if you had seen the film you will understand. Also special effects are wonderful and breathtaking. For example the fight against the Jabberwock seems so real and the effects are marvelous. The film won two Oscars for best art direction and best costume design, and was also nominated for best visual effects. It is also one of highest-grossing films and its revenue was over one billion dollar.

The film begin when Alice is small and she sees odd dreams about Wonderland and White rabbit and things like that. Then suddenly she is nineteen and goes to the parties where lord Hamish is intended to ask her marry him. Alice doesn’t know what to answer and she runs away. She sees the White rabbit and follows him. Then the story lasts like the original one. She falls in the rabbithole and finds her way into the Wonderland. Since then the story changes. No-one believes that she is the real Alice and she is the one who will slay the Jabberwock. The story go on and it has similar features as the original story but the whole thing is really different. In some parts only the characters are same. Alice is define to slay the Jabberwock so the Queen of hearts could be dethrone. The war begins and Alice encounter with the beast.

I love this film so much and it is one of my favorite films! One reason could be that i love fantasy movies and as I said before i just love Johnny Depp. The plot is really good and it isn’t predictable. There is many turns and things that you couldn’t even believe that can happen. The actors are fantastic great and i just think the whole film is one master piece. I really don’t have nothing bad to say about the film except the end. It’s kind of boring but on the other hand it is a good thing because the end shouldn’t be messy. And I’m glad that everything becomes clear and nothing bothers me. So really mesmerizing film and I suggest everyone to watch it. You are going to love it!

Maleficent

Remaking of fairy tale feature films is currently in vogue in Hollywood. One example of this is ”Maleficent”, a film about a fictional character from Walt Disney’s film ”Sleeping Beauty”. The movie is told from Sleeping Beauty’s evil fairy’s point of view. The film premiere was on the 20th of May in 2014 and got a lot of attention on the media all over the world. The film was directed by Robert Stomberg, while Angelina Jolie played her leading role brilliantly as the evil mistress.
Maleficent has collected reviews from side to side, both positive and negative, which is not surprising. Critics have criticized the excessive use of special effects. I do not particularly like fantasy movies so I was skeptical about the film, however, I decided to watch it because my friends recommended it. Before I saw the movie I thought that it would be childish but I was wrong. I think it the film was held together by the special effects and wonderful music and the main actors’ great performance. Angelina Jolie’s diversity repaired the simplicity of the plot. While in the fairy tales the bad guys are often nothing but monsters, Jolie is everything else: exciting, nuanced, genuine, even warm and funny. I’m not the kind of person who gets excited about special effects such as 3D, but I think they really did fit well in the film. Some people think that the story itself was overshadowed by the effects, but I think that the film might have become lame without them. I liked the fact that the movie was high quality and every point had been carefully considered all the way to the end.
Maleficent showed me that prejudices are often incorrect and sometimes it is good to watch movies that are not so serious. Also, it told me the old familiar childhood fairy tale from a different point of view which was bracing and fresh. Maleficent is one of those family feature films that is suitable for every fairy tale fan. The film is a story about all kinds of true love, and teaches that a person rarely is only good or evil. We should remember that every fairy tale has a lot of different versions.

Slumdog Millionaire

”Slumdog Millionaire” is the film to see. It is one of the best films i’ve ever seen. ”Slumdog Millionaire” is a British drama film directed by Danny Boyle and it’s released in 2008. The movie takes place on Mumbai, India, where eighteen year old orphan boy Jamal Malik is a contestant on the Indian version of Who wants to be a millionaire?. Jamal is one question away from winning the top price of the show, but the host can’t understand how an uneducated boy from a slum knows all the answers in the show, so he arrested Jamal a night before the last question and interrogated him after being convinced that he is cheating. The rest of the movie includes flashbacks to narrate the story of Jamal, love of his life Latika and his brother Salim. Although Jamal’s life was not easy, his life experiences gave him the knowledge to answer the difficult questions on Who wants to be a millionaire?. The movie has a typical happy ending, Jamal wins his 20 million rupees and gets his girl.

”Slumdog Millionaire” shows the poverty that exists in India. My favourite part of the film is at the start where the children are being chased through the slums by the police officers and it really shows you what the slums are like. The film also shows that there is some hope for children in the slums. It makes the film so touching.

A film like ”Slumdog Millionaire” does not come along very often. But when it does we end up falling in love. The movie is one of the most heart-warming and inspirational stories in recent years. Excitement, tragedy, love and hate it’s all featured together. If I were to point to one movie that will move you and force you to think, it would be ”Slumdog Millionaire”. I promise that the movie doesn’t leave anybody cold.

The Hobbit

The Hobbit is orginally a novel written by J.R.R Tolkien.  John Ronald Rauel Tolkkien, or better know as J.R.R Tolkien wrote many fantasy novels. He made a imaginative world called Middle-Earth, where lived all kinds of creatures like dwarfs, elfs and wizards. Tolkien wrote many books about the stories in Middle-Earth, but the most known was the trilogy, Lord of The Rings. Lord of The Rings tells about the events happened after The Hobbit.

The Hobbit or There and Back Again as the book is called is story about a young little hobbit called Bilbo Baggins that graved after an adventure. Bilbo lived in a so called Shire. The shire was a calm place and as hobbits were known, they enjoyed mostly smoking their pipes and taking care about their gardens, but then there where Bilbo. Bilbo had a little spark of adventure in him. He didnt like the thought o spending his hole life in the Shire, he wanted to know how was it on the other side of Middle-Earth.

Bilbos good old friend Gandalf the Grey was a wizard. One of the four wizards in Middle-Earth. Gandalf had promised to the dwarfs to take back what was stolen from them, their home. The dwarfs used to live in a mountain called Lonely Mountain. It wasnt just any mountain it was the biggest in the hole Middle Earth. The mountain had been captured by a big dragon, Smaug. Gandalfs, Bilbos and the 13 dwarfs where supposed to conquer the mountain back. They needed Bilbo to steal the Arkenstone from the mountain without waking the dragon. Bilbo was perfect for the task because the dragon wasent familiar with hobbits smell and he could move without making a sound. The journey to the mountain where filled with a variety of hazards and Bilbo hoped often that he could be sitting in his armchair smoking his pipe and not facing deadly dangers.

J.R.R Tolkiens work is filled with small little details and that made him one of the best writers in the entire world. Everybody that likes fantasy novels or films should  familiarize themselves with The Hobbit because there is nothing like it.

Eight Below

For the first time I watched this movie about eight year ago, and I remember when I first saw the movie trailer, that I immediately wanted to see it. “Eight Below is the most amazing story of survival, friendship, and adventure ever told” (this is from theatrical release poster) and it truly is. This is the one of the most touching and heartbreaking movie that I have seen. Maybe it’s because I love animals and this kind of movies always makes me cry, hah.

Eight Below is American family drama adventure film directed by Frank Marshall and written by David DiGilio. It was released theatrically on February 17, 2006, by Walt Disney Pictures in the United States. The film was filmed in Svalbard, Norway, Greenland, and British Columbia, Canada. Leading actors of the film is Paul Walker, Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood and Jason Biggs.

Eight Below is based on a true story and it’s a remake from the 1983 Japanese film Antarctica which is inspired by the 1958 ill-fated Japanese expedition to Antarctica. Eight Below adapts the events of the 1985 incident, moved forward to 1993, but the real story is more brutal and Eight Below is the lighter version of it. So, the movie is telling about Jerry Shepard (Paul Walker) which is a guide at an Antarctica for the group of explorers. When the storm hits in the Antarctica, Jerry is forced to leave his eight faithful sled dogs in the middle of the storm and it soon becomes apparent that no rescue will be attempted until the next spring. Movie is also telling the story from the dog’s perspective of what it’s like to be alone in the mercy of the storm and frost, without any assistance. And this is where begins the battle of life and death.

The views of the movie was just amazing and it’s incredible that filming this movie, was used thirty different dog acting eight dogs, and they were doing all kind of stunts and needed to travel all over the world because the movie has been filmed different countries. The dogs did absolutely the best role execution if you can say so.
I believe that many of you aren’t interested about seeing this film, and many may have already seen this, but if you haven’t seen this and you like this kind of movies you definitely have to watch this. I can bet that this is a movie worth of seeing, even if you’re toughie or a crybaby. I can say that I’m the crybaby every time when I see sad movies especially if there any animals dying and this wasn’t exception. Still this is the one of the best movies I have seen and this also includes one of my favorite actor, Paul Walker. Maybe the greatest thing about this movie is that this is a true story (although it’s a modified version of the original story). Some dogs really have live alone in frozen Antarctic and survived from it (just two of the fifteen survived). The plot isn’t so surprising but Eight Below has something that touches me. Just incredible animals, whose every moment and gesture you’re following with great interest.

So, is this just a sad movie about dogs dying in Antarctic? No, this is the movie about friendship, loyalty and courage.

8 Mile

8 Mile is American movie based on 1995 year Detroid, which tells about young white rapper called ”B-rabbit” who wants to become famous. He works at an automotive factory and he is only white rapper trying to rap battle against black people. He has a lot problems in his privacy life and with other rappers. He still have couple friends who help him trough. In the end he destroys Papa Doc (titleholder) with his sick freestyle.

Movie is slightly based on real life of famous rapper Marshall Mathers aka. Eminem or Slim Shady. Eminem presents B-rabbit and movie also includes other well-known rappers like Xzibit and Proof

Soundtrack is awesome and huge part of the movie. There is a lot good songs from the famous rappers like 2pac, the notorious B.I.G, Nas, 50 cent,  Jay-Z, D12,  Xzibit, Obie Trice etc. and of course Eminem himself. ”lose yourself” by Eminem is legendary song which was made to this movie.

Movie doesn’t have any visual special effects but it still has the common effects such sound of punches and gun reloading etc.

Movie was directed by Curtis Hanson and released on November 8, 2002 with budget of 41 million dollars. It lasts 110 minutes.

I have watched this movie four times and it’s still good specially if you like rap music. It could have been made even better, it misses something maybe better acting or better camera working. Movie has received generally positive reviews and it deserves those.
