The Last Spin

The Last Spin (1960) is a short story written by Evan Hunter. Evan Hunter is only one Salvatore Albert Lombino’s pen-names and he the most well know as Ed McBain. Salvatore is also know from writing the screenplay of the Hitchcock film The Birds.

In this story two rival gangs – or as the author uses the term ”clubs” – decide to solve a conflict by setting up one member from both clubs to play Russian roulette against each other. Rules are simple, one must die. At the start the chosen club members don’t know each other or haven’t even seen each other before. But as the game goes on they start talking and they become aware that they joined their respective gang because it was the gang on their street, not because they liked the other members. They also realize that they aren’t enemies, in fact more like friends. But the rule of the game still stands and in the end one dies.

The main characters, and the only characters in the story are Tigo and Danny. Tigo is a member from the ”Green and orange” club. He is the one who starts the conversation and the game. He is more open and talkative than Danny and also seems more experienced. Sitting at the table, opposite Tigo there is Danny. Danny is a member from ”Blue and gold” club. He is more reserved and also nervous about the situation but of course he cannot show his weakness to Tigo so he tries to act calm as possible. It’s really easy to identify with the characters.  The story takes place in United States of America arguably somewhere around 1960’s referring to story’s publish date.

Over all the story is brilliantly written and it leaves reader begging for more. The language in the story isn’t very troublesome but some slang terms used in the story might throw you bit off. The Last Spin was truly exiting story and I would like to read more similar kinds of stories in the future.

The Last Spin

The Last Spin ( ~1960 ) written by well-known author Evan Hunter aka Ed McBain. McBain has written screenplay for Hitchcock’s movie The Birds. McBain’s genres are crime and mystery fiction.

The Last Spin is a thrilling and dramatic short story, which is story-like , including clear beginning and ending and doesn’t really leave too many ”loops” to figure out. The time interval of the short story is brief, which would be only few scenes in a movie. The story focuses on dialog and Russian roulette between two young men.

In the story Danny and Tigo are playing Russian roulette to settle down conflict between their clubs. They do not know each other, they were simply chosen from their clubs. The boys are minors and most likely  immigrants. Recruiting or kidnapping minors  isn’t new thing in gangs. Although the boys need to settle down the conflict and are considered as enemies , they get to know each other and their relation warms towards the end.

There isn’t much to tell about the plot, but Danny and Tigo are lucky and they come in conclusion that they aren’t the ones who should solve this conflict. They decide to give the last spin for the cylinder and end the game. Both boys seem to enjoy each other’s company and plan to meet after the game.

McBain’s  writing style is rather pleasant to read and it has many interesting word choices such as ” my old lady ” and ” i’m turkey ”, but this  ” old lady ” makes it harder to analyse. It is hard to say are they minors or not. Old lady can mean girlfriend and also mother, but it is also said in the text ” old country ” which means your parents  home town or country. Otherwise text and language is easy to understand.

The Last Spin is truly exciting short story and reminds me of Breaking Bad  -televison series

The last spin

Evan Hunter is the author of The Last Spin. His the most famous achievement is The Birds movie script. Protagonists in this dramatic short story are two men, Danny and Tigo. The story is full of  deep breaths, sweat and excitement.

In the story Danny and Tigo belong to different clubs. Their clubs had had disagreements and the clubs had settled that they solve problems with one way or with Russian roulette. Neither of them would want to be in that situation. Venue of the story is the basement room, where Danny and Tigo squeeze the trigger by turns until one of them is dead. If story has this kind of plot, it has to be thrilling and that’s what it was. The plot keeps the reader all the time awake. The reader must guess at all the time what will happen next and never you really know what it is.

Even though the story is based on a talk beetween two people, it is still so interesting that it makes you to read it on and in my case only very few author has done it. In the story Tigo and Danny see each other so different kind of persons, but when the story progresses they realize how similar they really are. That is one of the most fascinating things in the plot.

The text of the story has written with so fabulous way that it was actually pleasure to read it. After all text was very difficult to read, because there was so much terminology and protagonists discussed with very powerfull slang. When I read text, I had to focus entirely to reading.

Too Much Happiness

I read a short story collection named ”Too Much Happiness” by Alice Munro,  the collection was published in 2009. Munro is a 82-year-old Canadian short story writer and she won the Literature Nobel prize in 2013 (”master of the contemporary short story”.)

Book consist of ten short stories ( Demensions , Fiction, Wenlock Edge, Deep-Holes, Free Radicals, Face, Some Women, Child’s Play, Wood and Too Much Happiness) Length of one story is roughly thirty pages. They tell stories about ordinary men and women and some turning points in their lives, turning points which still have effect in their current life or somehow entrail in it. Stories are as short stories usually are: they tell you something but still leave you in wonder: what did that mean? Why did she say that? How can you move with your life after that? What did happen next? You crave for more.

In every short story there is a different main character, men and women, young and old. Unitive author is that they all seem ordinary people living their ordinary lives: families, friends and nice jobs.

Book’s characters have different kind of situations. Storie’s themes are heavy: murders, violence, dishonour, adultery and pure evilness. Even though the themes are harsh and it seems that incidents are so far away from your own life, author has made it sound like it could happen for all of us. Things are told so delicately but still straight. To counterbalance there are a little bit lighter themes also:  hard relationships, normal circuit of life and misunderstandings. All these things mixed with love and continuation of life. My favorite short story was ”Free Radicals” which tells story about an old woman who has just lost her husband and man who comes to this woman’s house and tells that he has murdered his family, they have this strange ”kind-of-conversation” where turns out that this old lady isn’t so pure either.

Book’s narrator is an omniscient narrator in the most of the stories but some of the stories are told by characters. All the stories are told in the way you get to know the character as much as possible. Even though stories consentrate mainly on some incidents, there is happening so much more: sometimes the character looks back or time goes on and sometimes they just think their lives generally.

I kind of like the book. I usually read detective stories so this departed from them. It was refreshing to read in english, it brought challenge and it was nice to know that i was reading the book just like the author has wrote it.

Full Stop

I read Full Stop which is a short story written by Alecia McKenzie. The story consists of Grandma Scottie and her grandchild Carmen’s letters to each other. They live far away from each other so they have found a way to stay connected to each other by writing letters to exchange pleasantries.

Carmen and Grandma talk about their everyday lives by exchanging letters every once in a while. Eventually the conversation turns to Carmen’s real mother who is nothing more than a birth giver to her because of the fact that Grandma Scottie is the actual person who raised Carmen and her brother Richard. Carmen’s mother tries to contact her daughter but Carmen doesn’t want to face the woman who is like a complete stranger to her. When it comes to her mother Carmen feels abandoned and seems almost like bitter.

When getting no response to her communication attempts Carmen’s mother shows up in Carmen’s apartment. She tells Carmen her version of what happened – she and Carmen’s father had to give children up to under Grand Ma Scottie’s guardianship because they had no money. They moved in the UK to get employed and by the time they came back in the USA, their home country, Grandma actually refused to give the children up. Grandma broke the agreement she had made with the children’s parents.

Now it is in Carmen’s hands which story she chooses to believe. She still remains skeptic about her mother’s version but neither she is so sure about Grandma being truthful anymore. After her daughter showing up Grandma suddenly chances her action; she seems to go into her shell. Grandma finally agreeing to get the burglar bars reflects their relationship in a symbolic way. Burglar bars symbolize what Grandma starts to feel towards Carmen – she feels like she is isolated from Carmen now that also she has started to doubt her veracity.

I interpret Carmen as the story’s protagonist and Grand Ma Scottie as an antagonist – not actually meaning that the old apparently very religious lady is the villain of the story or anything but representing the opposite to her. Carmen’s character is a little naive and also really benevolent – she wants to protect her grandmother for example by sending her money to get somebody to put burglar bars over all the windows of hers in case of thieves. At first sight Grandma seems like an endearing old lady but in the end turns out she’s been lying about things in the past.

The story consisting fully of dialogue in the form of letters is an interesting solution from the writer. Grandma’s letters are illegible; she writes entirely without punctuation. Without full stop. I think the story title is chosen to represent what happened to Carmen and Grandma Scottie’s relationship. They receded from each other. No one really put the ”full stop” to their relationship but in the last letter Grandma seems to become distant.

The Last Spin

Evan Hunter’s short story ”The Last Spin” takes place in a small basement. Tigo and Danny, the two members of opposing gangs, are forced to play a game of Russian roulette to settle disagreements between their gangs. The dramatic story is about how easily enemies with no personal hatred against each other can become friends when they talk about their lives and start to see each other in a different light.

At the beginning it seems that Danny is the protagonist and Tigo is the antagonist but as the story progresses it turns out that Danny and Tigo are both the protagonists of the story and the antagonists of the story are the gangs which forced the boys to play against each other in a lethal game.

The story revolves around the game of life and death and the character development between Danny and Tigo during the thrilling game. In the beginning they only know each other by the gangs’s jackets and maintain hatred against each other as natural enemies. Slowly they begin to familiarize with each other and start talking and laughing together to the same things. At the same time they are playing the game with their lives at stake. After they have become friends, built trust towards each other and promised to go rowing next Sunday, Danny goes for the fateful last spin which ends the story tragically resulting in Danny’s death and Tigo’s weeping over the sorrowful loss of his newly acquainted best friend.

The story consists mostly of dialogue between the protagonists, but the short narrator parts are from a third person omniscient point of view. The narrator sees inside the heads of Tigo and Danny and tells about their feelings at the precise moments.

The themes of the story are about how belonging in a group that is enemies with another group doesn’t mean that the individual members of the enemy group are necessarily your enemies, how life can end when you the least expect it and how a deep trust and friendship can be formed in a really short time, even in weird situations.

The Cricket War

‘The Cricket War’ is a short story by Bob Thurber. It tells about a Family that lives in the countryside and of course their farm house has creepy crawlers. The mother can’t stand bugs at all and tells father to get rid of them or she’ll leave. When father tries to kill the crickets he ends up in a war with them.
Mother and father are protagonists. I understand the mother; she doesn’t like crickets which are coming inside almost everywhere. But why has she agreed to move to the country side if she has no tolerate a few bugs in the basement. Their antagonist are the crickets and live in the countryside.
One of the family’s kids is the narrator. He tells the story in his point of view. The narrator tells what character had said to another. There are no dialogues in the story.
Ending of the story is not predictable. It makes me think of that maybe the father doesn’t want to reject pests himself next time when they come inside the house. I think also the story means that humans don’t ordain everything in the world.

The Last Spin

”The Last Spin”, a short story written by Evan Hunter, tells us a touching story about two guys, Danny and Tigo. They are both gang members who have been chosen to play a game of Russian roulette, the purpose of which is to settle some of the gangs’ disagreements. The game takes place in a small basement room.

The protagonists of the story are basically both of the main characters, Danny and Tigo. This is because neither one of them is brought up or described more than the other. Danny and Tigo are both young men and share similar interests, both are wearing their own gangs’ jackets. The antagonist of the story is in some way the game that the guys are playing, which is also the story’s central conflict. In the end the game is resolved by Danny shooting himself.

The story also features some character development. In the beginning Tigo is Danny’s enemy and they are a bit cold to each other. As the game goes on, they start to talk about things and even have a laugh. They notice that they come along well, although being from different gangs, and that they suddenly have trust and friendship between them, which after Danny shooting himself leads to Tigo starting to cry.

The narrative point of view in ”The Last Spin” is third person omniscient, as the narrator seems to know what Danny and Tigo feel during the game. However, the narrator isn’t very important to the story, because most of the story consists of Danny and Tigo’s dialogue.

The main themes of the story deal with the shortness and vulnerability of life and how friendship can form even in strange situations, such as a game of life and death. It also tells that belonging to a gang doesn’t make you a bad person and that an enemy can sometimes be good.

The Last Spin

I read a short story The Last Spin by Evan Hunter. The story tells about two boys who are settling a conflict between their gangs by playing Russian Roulette.

These boys, Danny and Tigo, are only characters in the story. Danny is the protagonist because the story is told by his point of view. For example, the narrator tells about Danny’s feelings but not a single word about Tigo’s feelings or what he thinks. At first, Tigo is the antagonist but when the story goes on Danny and Tigo become friends. The narrator is third person omniscient even though it tells nothing about Tigo’s feelings or thoughts.

The story is trying to say that there are always good people amongst the opposite side, amongst the enemy. Sometimes it is not the ”normal” people who want two groups or nations to fight against each other, it is the decision-makers, the ”clever” people.

The Last Spin

The Last Spin” is a short story written by Evan Hunter. It tells about two guys, Danny and Tico, who are chosen to settle some territory brawl from their clubs by playing a ”game”, which is a matter of life and death.

The protagonist or the antagonist of the story isn’t said clearly. And it’s because either Danny or Tico is the protagonist or the antagonist of the story. Another reason for not knowing sure about the
characters role is that the narrator of the story is someone outsider, and it gives a different view about the story to that who ever reads it. That’s why it’s so hard
to tell. And because overall the text is mostly Danny’s and Tico’s dialogue.

The ending of the story was kinda easy to guess.

The theme in this story is pointing on something like: ”Life is short” or ”Enjoy little things in life”. I also found it very awesome that a friendship can bloom in a very short time in a place and at a time like that.
