Lord of the Flies

Lord of the Flies is a renowed classic by William Golding, published in 1954. It’s his first novel, and has received multiple awards, for example the Nobel Prize. The book may be described as allegorical novel, since it tells a story about group of British boys who have stranded on a desolated, trophical island. With no grown-ups on the island, they tried to establish rules and goals, which didn’t work out for the boys and they became literal savages.

Ralph was one of the main characters, being the protagonist. He was voted to be the Chief and make the important decisions. Ralph expected to be rescued shortly, and not to be on the island forever. They decided to make a fire and keep it up the whole time for the passing ships to see them. However there was a large difference between the boys and it became impossible for Ralph to keep the boys together and do the things agreed in an assembly.

Piggy was another important character. The rest of the boys didn’t place much value on him: he was obese, had an asthma, accent, specs and avoided physical labour. Yet he had very valuable opinions and was a dear companion of Ralph. Also his specs were the only way a fire can be lit.

Jack Merridew can be called the antagonist: he and the rest of the choir were the Hunters, fetching meat for the others. He felt as if the island was a game, and didn’t want to be rescued as badly as Ralph. There was a clear conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist: Ralph favoured common sense and keeping the fire going, whereas Jack preferred the brilliant world of hunting together and exploring.

From this on, several crisises occurred which ultimately led to the total collapse of the British boys’ moral, common sense and brotherhood. Most important one was the scattering to two camps: Jack’s party and Ralph’s party. It is evident that Jack’s party was all about hunting, savagery and having fun. On the other hand, Ralph stuck to his guns and refused to act like a savage, tried to convince everybody that the fire was the most important thing. Following after this, on the heat of the moment, the boys together commited one of the bloodiest acts, which I wish to not spoil. Towards the climax, killing continues, more gruesome acts are done and it seems that all the British knowledge and morals the boys had, vanished on the island. Fast-approaching climax is bloody, warsome, exciting and devastating.

Even though William Golding managed to create very interesting and compelling plot, still his language and the milieu are very beautifully written and described. He doesn’t outright take the reader into excitement and folly, there were also some very harmonious moments and at first the island seemed like a nice place, where I longed to be at. At times, the boys experienced the great feeling of truly belonging in a group, and they had certain goals, aiming to accomplish them. Lastly, the island and the story are convincing and very realistic, despite being fiction.

Story is told more like looking trough the characters’ eyes and expressing their thoughts, portraying the events by how they see. That’s why there are many hidden meanings and if not reading carefully, reader may misunderstand a point. Sometimes the narrator is omniscient, revealing major details which the boys have no idea of. William’s writing style is very pleasing, and he succeeded in creating a rich world and great characters.

In conclusion, I am grateful for reading such an awesome book. Lord of the Flies deserves its place as a classic. The theme of the book is the disintegration of the boys’ little society and darkness of man’s heart. I felt compassionate for the characters, and couldn’t understand why the story reached such a tragic climax. Afterwards, it seemed like the boys were having a game, but without adults and took it much too seriously.I will keep the book close to my heart, since the questions Lord of the Flies raises, are very relevant to this day.

L.A. Candy

L.A. Candy is a fiction trilogy and I read the first one of the series which was published in 2009. The trilogy is written by Lauren Conrad who is an American television personality, author and fashion designer. She has been in reality shows such as the Hills and Laguna Beach and in my opinion the books were inspired by them. In this book we get to follow the life of Jane Roberts who is the central character and her friends.

At the very beginning of the book two friends, Jane Roberts and Scarlett Harp move to Los Angeles. They need to get out of their comfort zone and do something different with their lives. Jane has an internship in Fiona Chen’s office who is the hottest event designer in Hollywood. Scarlett starts to study in the USC college. The girls are very different. Jane is delicate and fragile and she always thinks before she does something. She is also crazy about decorating and fashion. Scarlett on the other hand is the brave one who always protects Jane from all the bad. Jane seems to believe that there is something good in everyone. Scarlett is the exact opposite from her best friend because she could not care less about fashion and looks. Still somehow she manages to look gorgeous.

The girls are new in the big town and they try to find out what life is like  there. They meet a couple of new guys and somehow they end up in a club where they are asked to contact Trevor, appreciated reality show producer, if they would like to star his upcoming reality show. The girls hesitate first but after a few days they call him and let him know that they are in. What could be a better way to make something happen in their life? Jane and Scarlett don’t even know what they are getting into. Soon the whole Los Angeles will know who they are and they want to know every little detail about them.

Everything advances quickly and soon the girls notice that their whole life is being shot. If they for example want to date a guy, it is not going to be a private relationship. The cameras follow them and two other girls to work, to clubs, to restaurants, to school.. It’s like they have no private life. In the end of the book Jane gets to see that it is not always a good thing when you get distracted with Hollywood lifestyle and glamour.

The language used in the book was very easy to read and the storyline was easy to keep up with. I liked the book because even though it was fiction it really could be true. None of the occurrences were over the top. This was only the first part of the series and the end of this book left me the feeling that i really should read the other ones as well. I usually don’t read this kind of books but this was a very positive reading experience.

Like I said in the beginning I think that the books were inspired by the author’s own experiences in reality shows. You could see the similarity in them. Lauren Conrad tells in one interview the following: ’’It also tells of what it was like during The Hills, some stories are basically behind the scenes on The Hills …’’. If you have ever watched the Hills and liked it, you are going to like the book also.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone

The book Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s stone is written by J. K. Rowling and was published in 1997. Said book is the first part of the Harry Potter saga. The main characters are Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. They are all eleven years old and are in first grade of Hogwarts school of magic. Harry and Ron are wizards and Hermione is a witch. They don’t know each other until they meet in hogwarts and become friends. As the book continues they all learn new things in the magical world, for instance new spells. Harry is still the most important character in the book. He is ”the boy who lives”. The evil lord Voldemort killed Harry’s parents when Harry was a baby. He tried to kill Harry too but failed and lost his powers. It left a lighting bolt shaped scar in Harry’s forehead. Characters felt so real and believable that I myself started to believe in magic a little.
In the beginning of the book Harry lives with his aunt and uncle in England unknowing about the magical world. Harry’s aunt, uncle and cousin are non-magical people or ”muggles”. When Harry is eleven he finds out that he’s a wizard when he gets an invitation to Hogwarts school of witchcraft and wizardry. Professor Guirrell who teaches defence against the dark arts, tries to steal the philosopher’s stone for lord Voldemort so that he could resurrect. Harry, Ron and Hermione end up in a big adventure when they try to stop professor Guirrells actions. In addition the sorting hat choses Harry in the house of Gryffindor. There he meets the headmistress Minerva McGonagall. Harry also meets and immediately converges to Hogwarts principal Albus Dumbledore. Harry hates throughout the whole book professor of the potions Severus Snape.
The book begins in the summer and lasts the whole school year.
The narrator is all-knowing and stays that way the whole book. The book is fictional and magic is it’s main theme. I think it’s written because the story touches everyone at all age. This book started the world-wide Potter phenomenon. The books message is that everyone can make it in life even though it may not feel like it right now. When Harry lives with his aunt and uncle he is bullied and discriminated little boy and nobody knows him. In the magical world Harry finds out that everyone knows him and his lightning bolt shaped scar.
I liked everything that happened to Harry in Hogwarts. Every chapter about hogwarts were interesting and exciting. The least I liked the beginning of the book where there mostly just sorted out things. I would recommend to all who has watched Harry Potter movies to read them also as books. Books take movies deeper to the world of Hogwarts. The book was familiar to me because I had read it a couple times in finnish earlier. It was still a bit confusing that in this english version many characters had a different names then in the finnish version. Probably book would have been hard to read if I hadn’t known about the story a little beforehand. Entirely the book was magnificent!

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street is a musical horror film. It was published at 2007 and directed by Tim Burton, who is one of the world-known directors. Tim Burton had directed many famous films, like Nightmare Before The Christmas and Sleepy Hollow.

This movie has very famous actors: Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as Nellie Lovett and Alan Rickman as judge Turpin.

This movie is based on a legend of serial killer named Sweeney Todd. Movie takes place at the 19th centurys London.

The plot shortly: Sweeney Todd returns in to London, after 15 years, to revenge judge Turpin’s terrible plan. Turpin had falsely charged and banished this barber from London, to get his wife, Lucy. Sweeney Todd settled down to his old barber shop, right up the meatpie bakery. He heard about his wife, who had poisoned herself and about the child his wife got. He ends up killing his own wife and meatpie baker Nellia Lovett, who told Lucy was dead.

This is a great movie, because Tim Burton is my favourite director and Johnny Depp my favourite actor. I like the idea of the film, because I love horror and musicals. The soundtrack of the film is very different in every part of it. Johnny Depp is shining in his role, and Helena Bonham Carter is crazy woman as always. They play well together.

Moominland Midwinter

I write this book review of a book Moominland Midwinter. I chose this book because when I was younger I liked this book very much and now when I`m older I still like this. I don`t enjoy very much reading books but I think that this book is really hearth-warming and lovely. This book is written by Tove Jansson.

The characters in the book are Moomintroll, Little-My, Too-Tick, Spook and Great Gold. Relationship between Moomintroll and Little-My is interesting because Little-My is vivacious and Moomintroll is peaceful. Too-Tick lives in winter under the ice and he is clever and quiet.  It`s great   see how characters come closer and take care of each other. Characters didn`t seem at story real but they had very much human feature.

Story begin when Moomintroll wake up in the middle of winter. It`s new to him because Moomin`s always sleep at winter. Moomintroll is only who wake up and later Little-My wake up also when squirrel waking up her. Story tells how Moomintroll see winter and how new and exciting that is for him. One of my favorite parts of the text is when Moomintroll ask “What this snow?” and Too-Tick answer about that “sometimes it is white, red, blue, yellow, warm and cold – Moomintrovery is very astonished about snow and winter.

Book`s plot happened in Moominland. The plot tells about  the winter and the end of the story tells about the spring. I think that this book is a beautiful grow up story and it also reminds us to be always brave. And it tells about friendship and remind to us research the world and things what happened around us.

My favorite part of this book is when the spring comes at the end of story and another Moomins  wake up. Moomintroll have seen something that no one in his family have ever seen. He tells what he has experienced and what he thinks about the winter and the strange things what happened during the winter.

In this book language was easy to read and I understand almost everything of it. Of course dictionary get help when I didn`t understand text

It was new to me read english book, but it was also learning, I learned new vocabulary, of course it`s take more time but what is the most important, I also learned something.

The Hound of the Baskervilles

The Hound of the Baskervilles is a novel written by a British novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His Sherlock Holmes novels were first released in Strand Magazine in 1901-1902 as a serial. Later they were released as books and The Hound of the Baskervilles is one of the most popular ones. There are many novels that Doyle has wrote about Sherlock Holmes’ journeys.

The novel is a crime novel/detective story. It fits in to the theme for being so exciting and addictive. All the Sherlock Holmes novels are quite similar I guess! And all other detective stories might be similar too.

A main character is Sherlock Holmes who plays the biggest role in other Sherlock Holmes novels too. He is a London-based consulting detective, whose logical reasoning is very famous and so is his skills to solve difficult cases. Also Doctor Watson, a good friend and companion of Holmes, is adventuring in the novel.

The Hound of the Baskervilles tells about Sir Charles Baskerville who were found dead in the grounds of his Devon home. Other people thinks that something weird is happening and they decide to call to detective Sherlock Holmes . Together they are trying to solve the dead, is it a murder or just a normal dead. They are starting to doubt if the Hound of the Baskervilles has showed up again.

The novel was really difficult to read sometimes because the language was challenging.  One of the characters, Dr John Watson, is telling the story.

This book was quite a bad reading experience. It might be because this was the first novel that I read on English. It might get easier when reads more on different language. It was hard to read the story and at the same time try to research unknown words. I didn’t liked the story either. It was too complicated and not really my type.

Alice in Plasticland

Alice in Wonderland is one of my all-time favorite stories. The world of the story is really fantastic, and the amount of imagination that is required to create something like that amazes me. I think that Disney´s animation version of Alice in Wonderland is the best animation I have ever seen.
I also like Tim Burtons (director) movies, especially films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands, because he has created such curious worlds at them.
You might think that when you combine two things that you like, the result would be very good. Unfortunately that is not the case with the Alice in Wonderland movie (2010).
Tim Burton´s version of Alice in Wonderland doesn´t add anything new to the story. Actually it just keeps repeating the same things that have already been seen in Disney´s version. Original story is meant to be crazy and senseless, but Tim Burton´s 2010 version is trying too hard to make Alice in the Wonderland to a rational story. Plot is like in every Hollywood movie, it has a hero and of course the final battle at the end. This doesn´t fit to the Alice in Wonderlands “curious” world.
In my opinion computer-animation made the characters and the world look too ”plastic”, thought I have to admit that the special effects in the Tim Burton`s version were really amazing.
Only good thing in the movie is actors, thought their work is hard because of the awkward script. For example Alice is meant to be nineteen years old in the movie but the characters lines are too childish. Johnny Depp as The Hatter was lovely (of course he was, he is the Johnny Depp) and I also liked the White Queen (Anna Hathaway) very much.
All and all movie lacks this magical feeling of fairytales, and the “curiousness” of the original story. I was disappointed in it, but on the other hand, if I wouldn´t be so familiar with the original Alice in Wonderland, maybe this Tim Burton´s version wouldn´t be so bad.

The Vow

The movie is about a man (Leo Collins) and a woman (Paige Collins) who fell in love with each other. Their life together was perfect until they got into a car accident. The woman got a brain trauma as a result of which she lost a small part of her memory. She did not remember her husband at all. Leo tries to help Paige to remember all that was in their life before the accident. And he decides to re-conquer the heart of Paige again. Unable to get the love of his wife for the second time, he gives up. But in the end, after many trials, they come back together again.
Channing Tatum, who plays the main male role, was perfect. He is handsome and since the movie is mainly for girls he was a perfect choice. His character was gentle and very caring. In the middle of all the suffering he stayed patient and let Paige recover from the accident. But leading female act Rachel McAdams was not so great. They just did not look good together. In the beginning of the movie Paige was very likeable person but after the accident she changed in to a boring and annoying one. There was nothing to complain about the side characters.

The filming of the movie was good and professionally made. Music was chosen to the movie so that it fitted to different situations well. The film score, written and composed by Rachel Portman and Michael Brooks. The Vow is based on the actual relationship of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, who wrote a book about their marriage, also known as The Vow. Chicago gets to show off in a number of shots, particularly in the Grant Park lakefront area, but most of the film was shot in Toronto.

The Hobbit- The Desolation of Smaug

The Desolation of Smaug is the second part of the Hobbit-trilogy, first is The Hobbit- An Unexpected Journey and the next and the final one will br The Hobbit- There And Back Again.  The Hobbit is the trilogy written by J.R.R Tolkien and movies are directed by Peter Jackson.

Plot:  The movie starts when old mage Gandalf and a Dwarf named Thorin Oakenshield meet at the Inn of the Prancing Pony. Gandalf suggests that Thorin should get mystic jewel, the Arkenstone, to himself and take the Lonely Mountain back to the Dwarves control from mean dragon, Smaug.

After year, Thorin, his 13 Dwarves, Gandalf and a snitch Bilbo Bagging start their journey at the Lonely Mountain.

On their trip they notice that the Orcs follow them. Later Bilbo notices that massive black bear is also tracking them. The bear proves to be a skin-changer named Bearn. Bearn saves them from Orcs and company get a permission to sleep in Bearn’s house.

In the morning Gandalf leaves Bilbo and Dwarves and heads his way to Dol Guldur. Before that he ushers Bilbo and Dwarves to Mirkwood.  Gandalf warns them to remain on the path and tells them to wait for him before entering the Lonely Mountain. The  Dwarves lose their way in Mirkwood and giant spiders catch them, but Bilbo uses the One Ring and frees the Dwarves.

Later Elves, who live in Mirkwood, jail them to dungeon. Again Bilbo saves them and manages to escape riding in empty wine barrels. However, Orcs attack and in the battle one of the Dwarves, Kili, wounds bad.

Bilbo and the Dwarves arrive at the Lake Town named Esgaroth. Fisherman Bard gives them bed. Later it is uncovered that Barn is a last ruler of Dale, and he own only one  weapon which can wound the Smaug: Black Arrow.

From the Esgaroth Bilbo and Dwarves reach to the Lonely Mountain. There they must meet dangerous and terrible monster: a huge dragon, Smaug.

Summary:

The movie happens in the fantasyworld Middle-earth, where lives the Orcs, the Hobbits, the Elves, the wizards and witches, giant spiders, skin-changers, the Dwarves, Nazguls and many else.

The Desolautio of Smaug publiced 2013 in November. Main are Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), Smaug (Benedictus Cumberbatch) and Bard (Luke Evans)

Evaluation:

When I saw the movie, my first reaction was surprise. The special effects were awesome. If I had to choose one character which I would  identify with, it would be Thorin Oakenshield because he is brave, tough and fundamentally goodhearted.

Maybe my favourite part was the part when the Dwarves and Bilbo escaped from the Elves castle. It’s unexpected and thrilling.  Film evokes an ” I can’t wait the next part”-feeling. The movie ends with an exciting scene.

However, sometimes the movie isn’t easy ro follow.  There are so many character and places and all of them have so difficult names.

Still I loves the movie and I want to see final part of the trilogy.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino (1994) is a thriller film. As we know this movie is the first big hit Tarantino produced.

The movie story takes place in L.A. and is about two killers or more specific hitmen (John Travolta-Vincent and Samuel Jackson-Jules) who are supposed to get back a suitcase that was stolen from Marsellus Wallace(Ving Rhames) a major kingpin who is working with a boxer who failed to throw a fight and now is planning to flee the city. These two hitmen are in running into a dew unexpected detours along the movie road. Vincent takes care of Wallace’s daughter (Mia-Uma Thurman).
Some of these people redeem themselves and some don’t and all meet an appropriate ending due to their choices.
Inside the movie we can find an amazing crew doing a great work on the character work, for example John Travolta and Samuel Jackson, they did complement themselves in an incredible way. Both of them have an amazing style and Uma Thruman is not that far from them. Going deeper to the characters we find that Vince (John Travolta) was a heroine yonki, he has traveled all around europe and he is a very loyal ”worker”. Then we have his bro, Jules (Samuel Jackson) he also works in the same gang as Vincent, Jules was a very important part of one of the best scenes in the movie, when he is reading the bible. And at the end we have the daughter of the kingpin Mia Wallace (Uma Thruman) cocaine and cigarette user, she also appears in one of the best scenes, when she inhales heroine instead of cocaine, after it an amazing adrenaline shot scene is done to save her life, she and Vincent are in love of each other.
The film contains a mix of American rock and roll, pop, soul and some similar music. The soundtrack consists of 9 songs from the movie and seven songs from the movie were not in the cd soundtrack of the movie, there is one remarkable song, Girl, you’ll be a woman soon, this song was one of the hottest at the moment (1994) and in my opinion the music type really connects with the movie topic.
In conclusion Pulp Fiction can be considered as a master piece because it was made with a ”low budget” and it was something really different from the normal movies at that time. In my opinion everyone must watch this movie.
