The Hobbit or There And Back Again

The Hobbit is a fantasy novel written by an english author, J.R.R. Tolkien. Considered as the father of contemporary fantasy, he aimed at creating a whole new world for his books. The book was released in 1937, and it has stood the test of time.

Tolkien introduces us to Middle-Earth and the small and jubilant Hobbits. The story starts off in the Shire: the home of Hobbits. Hobbits aren’t really fond of adventures. They like to live in peace and potter around in their everyday lives. Bilbo, our main character, is visited by Gandalf, a great wizard. He needs a burglar to steal the symbol of authority, the Arkenstone, from a dragon. Therefore, the themes of this book are the safe ordinary life, versus new experiences and adventures.

Bilbo is aversed upon the thought of joining an adventure. The dwarves doubt that the small hobbit has the spirit in him. Bilbo proves them wrong by promising to do what is told, just so they would think of bilbo as a fierce and a bold hobbit. Bilbo has two sides. The first is the brave and adventurous side, from the line of the Tuk family. The other side is earth-bound and peaceful, from the line of Baggins. Bilbo’s relationship with Gandalf, the lingering wizard, is warm and almost fatherly to Bilbo towards the book’s end.

The dwarves are a warmhearted and a proud race. They are friendly with Bilbo, like naturally with all hobbits in Tolkien’s books. Their favorite things to do are singing, protecting their reputation and eating.

I myself liked the book very much. The narration drags you into Middle-Earth. This book has pretty much everything: tension and fright, drama and action.

Glee – the Beginning

Glee – the Beginning is a warm-up book for the TV series Glee, which is a musical comedy about McKinley high school’s teenagers. The book was released in 2010 (same year as the show came up), and it was written by Sophia Lowell.

The main characters of this book are the Glee members Rachel Berry, Kurt Hummel, Mercedes Jones, Artie Abrams and Tina Cohen-Chang. For them high school isn’t easy. Especially when the popular kids of the school are trying to ruin all the good things they have in school. For example choir, Glee club. That makes even harder to make glee success. Glee is also known as musical TV series, where the actors and actresses sing nearly the whole time. Of course that’s a little hard to include in a book, but still you can feel the music around you almost the whole time while reading the book.

Besides the Glee members, the book is about the popular kids in McKinley high ; cheerleaders and footballers. As all of you who have ever watched Glee might now many of the footballers and Cheerios are eventually joining Glee club. But during this book almost everyone of them is trying to ruin glee members’ life. They still have their own problems. Finn Hudson the quarterback of the football team, who is dating Quinn Fabray, the head cheerleader, has a secret crush on Rachel Berry. Quinn in turn doesn’t actually even like Finn, just the picture of him together with her. Quinn’s actual love is the football team’s bad boy Noah ”Puck” Puckerman, which doesn’t quite picture Quinn’s dream boyfriend, so that’s why she is dating Finn. It was exciting to see how these relationships were before the series. And especially how the relationships move ahead.

For me it’s easy to imagine these characters because I’ve watched the TV series also. And I have really began to like them. But for a person who have never heard about glee might these characters be a little weird, at least I felt that way at first. But I’m sure everybody can find a character to identify with glee. Glee has every kind of students; latin, gay, black, white etc. And it tells about everyone’s secrets and fears which makes it easy to identify with.

The narration of this book changes from time to time. Usually one chapter is told by one of the main character; thoughts, feelings and words. Chapters were named according to the place and time were something was about to happen. Because of that you could usually guess who was the chapter about to tell. For instance choir room was often told by some of the glee kids. Like Rachel trying to train the other Glee kids look better on the stage.

I would recommend this book to a reader who likes comedy. And especially a teenager who likes to read about same kind of things are happening into her/his life. It was also easy to read at least for me, because I think the american accent the whole book is using is easy to understand because of present day’s big selection of american TV series. And even though it sometimes includes hard to understand words you eventually learn who to filter the less necessary words and you still get the main point.

Predator

Predator is a crime fiction novel written by Patricia Cornwell. Patricia Cornwell writes Dr. Kay Scarpetta-series and the Predator is 14th of them.

I haven´t read any of these Scarpetta-books before and it really annoyed me the whole time because I didn´t knew anything about the characters and their past. Patricia Cornwell clearly thought that everyone who reads this book has also read all her books. A lot of things (mostly the relationships between the characters) remained as mysteries to the end. I didn´t like Cornwell´s  style of writing, I think she just isn´t a good writer. Her describing was pale, it didn´t touch anything inside of me. It was very confusing that the story teller changed between the main characters  all the time.

The idea of the plot is pretty good, but it´s execution was horrible. It just didn´t work out. The whole book was very disorderly and the reader couldn´t catch the main points. Plot just jumped around with no clear goal. I think the best thing about crime novels is absolutely that you can also be one of the detectives and guess who will be the criminal and crime novels can be extremely hooking.

I am bookworm and I never drop out the book I´m reading, because then the books starts to haunt me because I don´t know the end of it.  If this wasn´t a school project I would have returned this book to the library after the five first chapters . Just because this book is incredibly boring. I still somehow hoped that maybe, maybe it could get better at the end of the book. I´ve never been so wrong. The end of the book is the most terrible thing about the book. It feels like that the writer just quickly gathered everything and calmly told who was the horrible raping slaughterer. It all just happened so quickly (like in thirty pages) that it made me feel like ”Hey, wait, after all this boring nonsense you just end this stupid book like this?!

The fellowship of the ring

The fellowship of the ring is the first part of three-volume epic novel The lord of rings. It´s written by J.R.R Tolkien. The book was published on July 1954.
The fellowship of the ring centralizes in the fictional universe of middle-earth and it takes place in the Middle Ages. The atmosphere is dark but hopeful: The hobbits mankind face multiple consequences but still they find joy and happiness in the darkness. The Harrator is in the third person and it is all-knowing. The story starts from a small village called Shire. There two of the main characters, Frodo and Sam get mission to destroy the Ring. Their journey to destroy the ring is the main plot of the book but it has multiple side plots.
The developes mainly around Frodo and Sam´s journey but stil most of the book tells about three heroes Aragon,Legolas and Gimli. They mainly fight against evil wizard Sacron´s troops but their actions are meant to help Frodo and Sam in their mission.
The book has multiple themes and probably the most important of them is the corrupting influence of power. The ring has almost chlimited powers and it seems that it is immensely difficult for many characters to resist the temptation to steal the ring for themselves and use it for their own purposes. No matter what the wearer´s purposes, good or evil, the Ring´s power always turns the wearer to evil. The story is full of examples of those who are correpted by the Ring. for example Gollom who once was a young boy named Smeagol who the Ring turned evil and obnoxious creature.
The main characters of the book are the hobbits Frodo and Sam, the wizard Gandalf the grey and the ranger Aragorn. Frodo is the ring-bearer whose task is to destroy the ring. Frodo has a great ability to resist evil. He is brave, wise and unfailingly polite. Unlikke the most Hobbits Frodo is curious about the world out of Shire. Aragon has a great amoount of power and knowledge under a humble exterior. Aragorn does a display a sort of vulnerability. Durin the story Aragorn slowly transforms into the king he is destined to become.
To my mind the highlight of this book was in the last charapter when the ring overtakes Boromir´s, who is one of the Frodo´s protectors, mind and makes him try to kill Frodo during the battle against the ores. This leads to Boromir´s death by the arrow of the ore.
The text is hard to read and it´s hard to keep up with the plot but when the story went on, the book shatched me in to it. it ended up to point where i lived within in the emotions of the book, if characters felt sad or happy, i did too.

Black Beauty

The book that I read is Black Beauty and it is written in 1877 by Anna Sewell. Black Beauty is a very old story about a black horse, who travells around the England during her life. The story is narrated from Black Beauty’s perspective. It is a novel.

Anna Sewell has written this novel beacause she wants to tell  people about animals welfare and how to treat them kindly, respectly and sympathetically. The book represents its genre very well. Black Beauty is very good book for them who wants to find out what horses life includes, for example pulling heavy carriages and galloping. Anna Sewell’s book Black Beauty is one of the best selling books of all time, and it also made an affect on me.

Main characters are Black Beauty, Farmer Grey, Squire, John Manly, Ginger and Merrylegs.

Black Beauty tells about a horse’s lifestory  from its  youth to grown up. Anne Sewell is trying to accomplish better animal rights and their welfare in this book. That might be one big reason why she has written this novel from horse’s perspective. Author describes people, things and  places very exactly in this book. Narrator is inside in this story and for example horses can speak to others, but occasionally she is external. There are horses, farmers, grooms, families and riders in this book, which makes the story interesting, versatile and attractive. Events in this book are in chronologial order, so this is quite easy to read, understand  and follow the plot. In this book is even  little bit horror for example when The Black Beauty is in the horse stable, it starts to burn and they all start to panic.

Writer takes a stance on animals welfare, health care and their future. She also tries to get readers convinced that animals need a better treatment.

I would give rating 8/10 to Black Beauty, because it is a stirring story about loyal horse, who gets sometimes bad treatment from cruel people. Its a  book that everyone should read.

Miss Molly

The book I read was Miss Molly and it is written by Jenny Oldfield. Miss Molly is part of “Black Pearl Ponies”-serie and this book was published in 2011. Book tells about pony called Miss Molly.  Main characters are Keira and her dad, whose home is Black Pearl Ranch, where they help training ponies.  Keira has a talent with ponies and she can think the way a horse thinks, and her dad is hopeful  that some day Keira can take his place and continue his job with ponies, in ranch. One of main characters is also Sable Lucas, whose parents plan to give her a surprise on birthday – pony.  In my opinion, all characters in book seem real.

Sable Lucas’s parents want to give her a big birthdaypresent: Miss Molly. Miss Molly has some problems and pony is little bit nervy. So, Sable’s parents brought Miss Molly in Black Pearl Ranch and allow Keira and Keira’s dad  only three weeks to train the pony.  Problems cannot be avoided and along the journey happens suprising things. Miss Molly’s big problem, horror of trailers, solved. But what happens then? The biggest part of story take place in ranch. Book events take time some weeks, maybe three or four weeks. Events are told in chronological sequence. The narrator in the story is all the time neutral, outside of the book.

I think that main theme of this novel is something like “never give up”. Problems will be solved! With ponies, it is important to be persistent. In my opinion, the best part of the book is whole story about Miss Molly’s training. I was maybe too old to read this book, and I can recommend it  maybe for 10-12 years old girl who like horses.  I felt language was quite easy to read, and I can noticed that book is headed for kids. When I started read an English novel, I think reading will be very difficult. At first it was little bit hard, but then reading in English started to go.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s Stone is written by J.K. Rowling and it was published in 1997 by an Bloomsbury book publishing. The Philosopher´s Stone is the first book of the seven part book series, and it´s translated to many languages. It is a fantasy book.

The wizard world is celebrating their victory of one of the most scariest dark wizard, Voldemort. At the same time, one-year-old Harry is being taken to home of  his aunt Petunia- and  Vernon Dursley, because this little boy´s wizard parents died at the attack of Voldemort. Something strange however happens, and Harry didn´t die like Voldemort had planned. Voldemort disappears, leaving a lightning-shaped scar to Harrys forehead.

Harry who is scrawny and black haired, brave and careing, lives 10 years in a closet under his aunts stairs. Right before Harrys 11-birthday, he starts to receive mysterious letters. Vernon destroys all of them, and when letters literally start coming from doors and windows, they escape. Now they think they are safe, but however, Hagrid finds them and gives Harry a letter, where is told what happenned to his parents. The letter also included an invation to Hogwards. Now Harry starts his first adventure.

Harry arrives to magical castle Hogwards with his friends, Ron who is red haired, quite tall and so loalty and Hermione who is curly headed, smat girl. Harry met them while the train journey to Hogwards. At Hogwards, children are devided to different houses based on their trait. One of the houses is Gryffindor, where all the three friend´s managed to get. When they had started their studying, many strange things start to happen, like the stairs move by themselves. However, there happens that kind of things, that raises children´s doubts about Mr. Snape. Children think that Mr. Snape wants to steal the Philosopher´s Stone, which is hidden in the castle, and it´s made of the elixir of life. Now the children´s real adventure begins, and ends with an unpredictable way. Along the adventure, Harry starts to remember things from his past.

Harry Potter books are one of the most popular bookseries´s in the world. It is full fiction, but it´s written so well, that it seems very real, because the writter descripes the characters and the inviroment so well. The book is so compelling, that you just have to keep reading it, you just cannot stop. The only bad side of the book is, that sometimes you lose your sense of time. Time in the book goes much faster than you think it goes. The message of the book is, that in life, anything could happen.

Winnie-the-Pooh

The book I read was Winnie-the-Pooh and it’s written by A.A. Milne. Winnie-the-Pooh was first published in 1926. The Book is illustrated by E.H. Shepard, you can find his drawings easily from Google. The book contains ten stories: Winnie-the-Pooh and some Bees, Pooh goes Visiting, Pooh and Piglet go Hunting, Eeyore loses a Tail, Piglet meets a Heffalump, Eeyore has a Birthday, Kanga and Baby Roo come to the Forest, Expotition to the North Pole, Piglet is Entirely Surrounded by Water and A Pooh Party.

I have seen all these stories as Disney’s filmed versions, so they were familiar to me. One story is about twenty pages, so they seem like bedtime stories. Stories are in chronological order, but narrator doesn’t tell strict times when something happens. Every plot comes out at last from the story’s name. In Winnie-the-Pooh and some bees Pooh is trying to steal honey from bees. Pooh goes visiting tells how Pooh went visiting Rabbit, and get stuck on Rabbit’s burrow. Pooh and Piglet go Hunting is story about fool Pooh who erred his own footsteps, and thought it was Woozle or Wizzle. So they tried hunt it whit Piglet. Eeyore loses a Tail is Winnie-the-Pooh story that I know the best. Poor Eeyore has lost his tail, and Pooh found it from Owl. Piglet meets a Heffalump tells how Piglet is trying to catch a Heffalump, and digs a trap for it with Pooh. They put honeypot in the bottom of the pit as a lure. Hungry Pooh goes after honey, and gets into the trap. In Eeyore has a Birthday, Eeyore has a birthday like the name of the story tells. Kanga and Baby Roo come to the Forest tells how Kanga and Roo came to the forest, and how the others didn’t like the idea first. In Expotition to the North Pole Christopher Robin wants to find the North Pole, and goes search for it with his friends. Finally Pooh finds the North Pole. Piglet is Entirely Surrounded by Water and so Pooh and Christopher Robin rescues him and so Christopher Robin organizes a party for clever bear who saved his friend; Pooh Party.

Main characters are certainly Pooh Bear, Piglet, Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga and Roo. Their traits are the same as we all know from Disney’s animations. Pooh is charming but fool and Piglet is as small as always. Christopher Robin is clever little boy, Eeyore is melancholy, Rabbit maybe little bit annoying, Owl is smart and Kanga is worried about Roo all the time, like mothers should. As we all know, characters don’t grow, even though they have birthdays.

The book starts when Christopher Robin asks narrator to tell stories about him and Pooh. Narrator is unknown, but knows what characters feel and what happens around the forest at the same time. The text was easy to read, it didn’t contain hard words, but sentences were really long. It was hard to keep up when sentences just went on and on.

Harry Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban

On year 1999 J.K.Rowling published her 3rd Harry Potter book ”Prisoner of Azkaban”. This fantasy story  was for example the Winner of the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year on the same year it was published. Harry Potter is unusual teenager boy living in England with his annoying Uncle-Vernon and his family. Harry is a wizard, studying in Hogwarts magic school. Also Harry’s best friends, two other main characters, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are in Hogwarts. Ron is an emphatic and positive boy from nice wizard family. Hermione is very intelligent and talented in magic, even her parents are not wizards. These three seems to be an ordinary real life teenagers, just with ability to do magic.

Prisoner of Azkaban tells a great story of Harry’s 3rd year in Hogwarts magic school. Harry is used to be in troubles in every year and this one wont give exception. Harry’s godfather, Sirius Black, convicted from killing many peoples, has escaped from highly-secured prison, Azkaban, and his after Harry. Even Hogwarts can’t protect Harry from Sirius, but in the end of the book, circumstances changes and new sides from many people are revealed. Harry, Ron and Hermione gots their hands on many situations and cases, for instance in time travelling and attack by dementors.

The narrator of the story is not Harry himself, it’s unknow but all the time going with Harry. Main themes is of course magic, fantasy and entertainment to the readers. Anyone can read this book, but the main target group is young people. Potter book series are also made for it’s fans, because it has lots of them who’s all the time waiting for new book. Harry Potter continued in year 2000 with the 4th book and ended 2007 when J.K.Rowling published 7th and last Harry Potter book ”Deadly Hallows”.

I enjoyed the whole book but the most from the part where Harry ja Hermione was time travelling, helping themselves to survive from challenging situations. It was so exciting, unreal and it was written good. I recommend this book for everyone who likes fantasy and enjoys spending time with books. The language is quite normal British english, but it includes many unusual words. Thats why it’s good to know the idea before reading it. Harry Potter stories are usually quite longs, so maybe this is not the first book to read in english. For me it wasn’t that hard, because I knew the story, most of the terms and I didn’t got bored while reading.

The Last Spin

I read Evan Hunter’s short story The Last Spin that was published in 1960. Hunter’s indigenous name is Salvatore Lombino, but he is also known by many other stage names, for example Ed McBain, Richard Marsten, Hunt Collins, Curt Cannon and Ezra Hannon. He has written a manuscript to Alfred Hitchcock’s movie The Birds and hundreds of other books.

The Last Spin is a short story and it tells about two boys who belong to the opposite clubs and they are forced to settle an argument over territory. The way to settle that is not very beautiful. The boys are playing Russian Roulette, so they can avoid big street boppins. At first they are real enemies. But the closer they come to the end the closer the get to each other. Boys notice that they have quite a lot of things in common. Alternately they put the gun to their temple and squeezed the trigger. After every squeezing the mode became more relaxed and deeper. But as always, in the end things didn’t go like boys planned.

The main characters, and the only characters, in the story are these two boys from different gangs. Tigo, the boy from the club of green jackets, is always the boy who starts conversation and also the game. He seems to be more experienced in this kind of things. Danny instead belongs to the club of blue jackets. He is more reserved and also afraid of what will happen. But of course he can’t show Tigo his suspicion. The story is placed in the beginning 1960’s in America where different gangs were very mutual phenomenon.

Language in this short story isn’t very difficult but there are some strange and new words. But the same words could be found all over the text so after you have checked them once from the dictionary, the end of the text is quite easy to read. The story is anyway good and interesting, but you need to read it twice to understand it, because at first you have no idea what is the text about.
