Maa johon en kuulu (The world where I don’t belong)

PLAY REVIEW

Director: Anne Mäkinen

Written by the working group of the project Tuulta purjeisiin

One free evening of mine I accidentally came across this play. For a long time I had been tempted to go and watch it. The idea of it was so interesting and I had heard so many praises about it that I knew I had to see it. Fortunately I did.

The basic idea is simple but brilliant: the script is written by a group of young people involved in this project, Tuulta purjeisiin. The project is for unemployed young adults who in some way or another need guiding in their lives (http://www.pori.fi/kulttuuri/tuultapurjeisiin-hanke.html). The script consists of stories from their own lives. The fascinating part is that an actor never performed in his own story.

Because of the extremely different kinds of stories in the play, the plot was not unambiguous. However there were some clear unifying factors between the scenes. There was some kind of a crisis in every story and all of them contained an attempt to criticize the society for the people’s unequal chances in succeeding in life which depend so strongly on the basis in which a person is born. I personally think they managed to share the thought very well. The crises in the stories varied between drug addictions, depressions, severe harassments and many other sad incidents.

Some stories stood out more than the others. The ones that got stuck in my head were Laura’s and Kaneli’s stories.

Laura was a sweet little girl whose parents got separated and her dear dad left her alone with her irresponsible mother. Six months later the dad was found dead lying under a tree. This story really touched me deeply because I couldn’t imagine losing my own dad in an accident. But this made me realise that world is a cruel place and these kinds of things can happen to anyone, anytime.

Kaneli, on the other hand, was a reckless rebel who just had a bad luck – and company. She had a habit of getting in strangers’ cars during a party night. Because of that habit, she unfortunately had to experience for instance a violent car crash and a ruthless rape. I think this was the most outrageous story of them all. I had a hard time trying to internalize that it is a true story, meaning that it actually happened to one of these amazing actors, these normal people with vulnerable minds.

Though the play was filled with sad storys, it had glimpses of humour here and there. I was especially delighted by the scene, where the actors were impersonating souls (but actually looked more like sperm cells!) in a programme called Soul of Finland. They were dealt different features like prizes even though they were something like ”drinking problem” and ”mentally ill parents”.

Focusing also on the technical aspect of the play, I noticed that the costumes of the actors were remarkably plain but effective. They were wearing only pure white clothes. This way they all seemed so innocent and equal. The lights were inventive and handled professionally. The set was almost nonexistent, but more would have been unnecessary. There was just the right amount of everything.

One thing that I realised as late as after the show was the fact, that the play consisted almost entirely of monologues. That sounds very boring, but I didn’t even notice it since the storyline was so intriguing all the time. It didn’t bother a bit.

The acting was suprisingly high quality considering the backgrounds of the actors and actresses. I know from experience that it isn’t easy in any way to express and empathise those kinds of heavy emotions, and that’s the thing I valued the most in this performance. It fealt real in my heart. It made me laugh and cry and fear many times. And most of all it made me think.

Disney’s ”Frozen”

The movie Frozen is an animated movie, loosely adapted from the tale ’The Snow Queen“ by Hans-Christian Andersen. With this movie, Walt Disney Pictures created a new great box office hit, directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. As it is an animated movie, there are just synchron speakers, but with Kirsten Bell, Idina Menzel and Jonathan Groff it has a good cast anyway.

The movie tells the story about two princess orphans, Elsa, who has the power of conjuring ice, and Anna. Elsa can’t really control her power, so after a accident she excludes her sister and every other human except her parents, who drowned at a boat trip, from her life and at her crowning day she can’t hold herself back anymore, exposes her power and runs away. The movie differs from other animated, and especially other Disney Movies in that way, that one time, it’s not all about the big love which need to be found, it’s about the importance and strength of family, when Anna goes after her sister to bring her back home, while teaming up with the mountain man Kristof and taking a lot of risks. On her way, she meets speaking stones, a snow monster and snowman Olaf.

Considering the pressure that lays on a child movie to facilitate children the right values, Frozen was a comprehensive victory. With the snowman Olaf, who is on my opinion the real star of the movie, Disney brings along a lot of humour, and makes the movie a real success. But it also tells the story about betray and that you cannot trust everyone, even if he claims to be the big love of your life. Apart from the story, the whole animation and details are just stunning, for example, right on the beginning the workers on the ice or the sea storm scene, where the princesses parents are drowned, the kings town itself, the dresses, or the hairstyles, which are my favourite. The songs in this movie didn’t annoyed me, as it happens often when I watch child movies, I really wanted to join and sing with them. All in all, Frozen brings together important childhood lessons, emotional highs and a funny event for the whole family, in a light format where you can just have fun, no matter your age.

The Impossible

The Impossible film is based on true story of a tourist family in Thailand 2004 when the tsunami hit there. It is directed by Juan Antonio Bayona and written by Sergio G. Sánchez and María Belón. The genre is drama/thriller.The movie is also Oscar nominated for the best performance by an Actress in a leading role Naomi Watts. It is realised in 2012.

In the film there is a family including mother Maria (Naomi Watts), father Henry (Ewan McGregor) and three sons, Lucas (Tom Holland), Thomas (Samuel Joslin) and Simon (Oaklee Pendergast). They are spending their Christmas holiday in Thailand in Khao Lak. At the day three which was the Christmas day  they were at the pool enjoying from the sun and suddenly the weather turns windy and animals started acting weird. It took only a few seconds when the water of tsunami hit to the hotel where the family were.

After water had hit the hotel the family drifted apart. Luckily Maria who was wounded from trash in the water and Lucas found each other. They struggled in the water until some people found them and got them to the hospital. While at the same time Henry was with Thomas and Simon searching Maria and Lucas. In the end of the movie the family luckily got together and they got home.

It was breathtaking to watch the movie and think of the people who were actually there when it happened 2004. The movie was so well made that you could imagine that you were there at the same situation fighting for your life and searching for your family. In my opinion it was very rough but worth of watching. I recommend this movie to everyone because I really liked it and it was so realistic and touching. There was a bit of special effects and they were realistic and amazing.

Mockingjay part 1

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay part 1 (directed by Francis Lawrence) is the third part of The Hunger Games –trilogy. The film is based on the novel Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins.

I had also read the novels and, to be honest, at first I found it a bit odd, that the third part would be released in two parts. It almost seemed like that the producers were only thinking about the money.

The plot simplified is that Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) struggles with the question, wheather she should be the Mockingjay –the symbol of a rebellion- or not. She understands that if she stood for rebels, the President Snow (Donald Sutherland) would hurt her loved ones. This dilemma is the main theme of the film: is it right to reject the person you love for the common good?

In my opinion the film was suprisingly violent and rough. There wasn’t lack of big booms and special effects in the film. For sure that did the trick in the movie teather, but I’m not so sure how it works in small televisions  for example. There were also lots of bones, wars and dead human bodies in the movie. That was weird for the film, which is almost phenomenon among lots of teenagers. The love triangle between the main characters Katniss, Peeta (Josh Hucherson) and Gale (Liam Hemsworth) received less attention in this part of the trilogy.

I was pretty satisfied with the acting of the leading stars. Especially Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hucherson managed to make their characters seem like they were about to go out of control.

The soundtrack of the Mockingjay part 1 was really good. Actually, the scene, were Katniss sang The Hanging Three –song, was the best part of the movie. The melody of the song was simple, and even a bit out of tune. It starts only Jennifer Lawrence singing the melody, but then a huge choir will join singing. Same time in the big screen a crowd of rebels marches towards the viewer. I think that was spectacular. I also found myself humming the song various times after waching the film.

To conclude, I think that Mockingjay part 1 had some good and touching scenes, along with the various effects and war parts. On the other hand, I’m still not convinced, why they wouldn’t have fitted with the rest of the scenes (that will be released in part two) into a one good movie.

Predator

Predator is a crime fiction novel written by Patricia Cornwell. Patricia Cornwell writes Dr. Kay Scarpetta-series and the Predator is 14th of them.

I haven´t read any of these Scarpetta-books before and it really annoyed me the whole time because I didn´t knew anything about the characters and their past. Patricia Cornwell clearly thought that everyone who reads this book has also read all her books. A lot of things (mostly the relationships between the characters) remained as mysteries to the end. I didn´t like Cornwell´s  style of writing, I think she just isn´t a good writer. Her describing was pale, it didn´t touch anything inside of me. It was very confusing that the story teller changed between the main characters  all the time.

The idea of the plot is pretty good, but it´s execution was horrible. It just didn´t work out. The whole book was very disorderly and the reader couldn´t catch the main points. Plot just jumped around with no clear goal. I think the best thing about crime novels is absolutely that you can also be one of the detectives and guess who will be the criminal and crime novels can be extremely hooking.

I am bookworm and I never drop out the book I´m reading, because then the books starts to haunt me because I don´t know the end of it.  If this wasn´t a school project I would have returned this book to the library after the five first chapters . Just because this book is incredibly boring. I still somehow hoped that maybe, maybe it could get better at the end of the book. I´ve never been so wrong. The end of the book is the most terrible thing about the book. It feels like that the writer just quickly gathered everything and calmly told who was the horrible raping slaughterer. It all just happened so quickly (like in thirty pages) that it made me feel like ”Hey, wait, after all this boring nonsense you just end this stupid book like this?!

Sweeney Todd

Sweeney Todd – The Demon Barber Of Fleet Street is a musical horror film. It was published at 2007 and directed by Tim Burton, who is one of the world-known directors. Tim Burton had directed many famous films, like Nightmare Before The Christmas and Sleepy Hollow.

This movie has very famous actors: Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter as Nellie Lovett and Alan Rickman as judge Turpin.

This movie is based on a legend of serial killer named Sweeney Todd. Movie takes place at the 19th centurys London.

The plot shortly: Sweeney Todd returns in to London, after 15 years, to revenge judge Turpin’s terrible plan. Turpin had falsely charged and banished this barber from London, to get his wife, Lucy. Sweeney Todd settled down to his old barber shop, right up the meatpie bakery. He heard about his wife, who had poisoned herself and about the child his wife got. He ends up killing his own wife and meatpie baker Nellia Lovett, who told Lucy was dead.

This is a great movie, because Tim Burton is my favourite director and Johnny Depp my favourite actor. I like the idea of the film, because I love horror and musicals. The soundtrack of the film is very different in every part of it. Johnny Depp is shining in his role, and Helena Bonham Carter is crazy woman as always. They play well together.

Alice in Plasticland

Alice in Wonderland is one of my all-time favorite stories. The world of the story is really fantastic, and the amount of imagination that is required to create something like that amazes me. I think that Disney´s animation version of Alice in Wonderland is the best animation I have ever seen.
I also like Tim Burtons (director) movies, especially films like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands, because he has created such curious worlds at them.
You might think that when you combine two things that you like, the result would be very good. Unfortunately that is not the case with the Alice in Wonderland movie (2010).
Tim Burton´s version of Alice in Wonderland doesn´t add anything new to the story. Actually it just keeps repeating the same things that have already been seen in Disney´s version. Original story is meant to be crazy and senseless, but Tim Burton´s 2010 version is trying too hard to make Alice in the Wonderland to a rational story. Plot is like in every Hollywood movie, it has a hero and of course the final battle at the end. This doesn´t fit to the Alice in Wonderlands “curious” world.
In my opinion computer-animation made the characters and the world look too ”plastic”, thought I have to admit that the special effects in the Tim Burton`s version were really amazing.
Only good thing in the movie is actors, thought their work is hard because of the awkward script. For example Alice is meant to be nineteen years old in the movie but the characters lines are too childish. Johnny Depp as The Hatter was lovely (of course he was, he is the Johnny Depp) and I also liked the White Queen (Anna Hathaway) very much.
All and all movie lacks this magical feeling of fairytales, and the “curiousness” of the original story. I was disappointed in it, but on the other hand, if I wouldn´t be so familiar with the original Alice in Wonderland, maybe this Tim Burton´s version wouldn´t be so bad.

The Vow

The movie is about a man (Leo Collins) and a woman (Paige Collins) who fell in love with each other. Their life together was perfect until they got into a car accident. The woman got a brain trauma as a result of which she lost a small part of her memory. She did not remember her husband at all. Leo tries to help Paige to remember all that was in their life before the accident. And he decides to re-conquer the heart of Paige again. Unable to get the love of his wife for the second time, he gives up. But in the end, after many trials, they come back together again.
Channing Tatum, who plays the main male role, was perfect. He is handsome and since the movie is mainly for girls he was a perfect choice. His character was gentle and very caring. In the middle of all the suffering he stayed patient and let Paige recover from the accident. But leading female act Rachel McAdams was not so great. They just did not look good together. In the beginning of the movie Paige was very likeable person but after the accident she changed in to a boring and annoying one. There was nothing to complain about the side characters.

The filming of the movie was good and professionally made. Music was chosen to the movie so that it fitted to different situations well. The film score, written and composed by Rachel Portman and Michael Brooks. The Vow is based on the actual relationship of Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, who wrote a book about their marriage, also known as The Vow. Chicago gets to show off in a number of shots, particularly in the Grant Park lakefront area, but most of the film was shot in Toronto.

The Desolation of Smaug is the second part of the Hobbit-trilogy, first is The Hobbit- An Unexpected Journey and the next and the final one will br The Hobbit- There And Back Again.  The Hobbit is the trilogy written by J.R.R Tolkien and movies are directed by Peter Jackson.

Plot:  The movie starts when old mage Gandalf and a Dwarf named Thorin Oakenshield meet at the Inn of the Prancing Pony. Gandalf suggests that Thorin should get mystic jewel, the Arkenstone, to himself and take the Lonely Mountain back to the Dwarves control from mean dragon, Smaug.

After year, Thorin, his 13 Dwarves, Gandalf and a snitch Bilbo Bagging start their journey at the Lonely Mountain.

On their trip they notice that the Orcs follow them. Later Bilbo notices that massive black bear is also tracking them. The bear proves to be a skin-changer named Bearn. Bearn saves them from Orcs and company get a permission to sleep in Bearn’s house.

In the morning Gandalf leaves Bilbo and Dwarves and heads his way to Dol Guldur. Before that he ushers Bilbo and Dwarves to Mirkwood.  Gandalf warns them to remain on the path and tells them to wait for him before entering the Lonely Mountain. The  Dwarves lose their way in Mirkwood and giant spiders catch them, but Bilbo uses the One Ring and frees the Dwarves.

Later Elves, who live in Mirkwood, jail them to dungeon. Again Bilbo saves them and manages to escape riding in empty wine barrels. However, Orcs attack and in the battle one of the Dwarves, Kili, wounds bad.

Bilbo and the Dwarves arrive at the Lake Town named Esgaroth. Fisherman Bard gives them bed. Later it is uncovered that Barn is a last ruler of Dale, and he own only one  weapon which can wound the Smaug: Black Arrow.

From the Esgaroth Bilbo and Dwarves reach to the Lonely Mountain. There they must meet dangerous and terrible monster: a huge dragon, Smaug.

Summary:

The movie happens in the fantasyworld Middle-earth, where lives the Orcs, the Hobbits, the Elves, the wizards and witches, giant spiders, skin-changers, the Dwarves, Nazguls and many else.

The Desolautio of Smaug publiced 2013 in November. Main are Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf (Ian McKellen), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), Smaug (Benedictus Cumberbatch) and Bard (Luke Evans)

Evaluation:

When I saw the movie, my first reaction was surprise. The special effects were awesome. If I had to choose one character which I would  identify with, it would be Thorin Oakenshield because he is brave, tough and fundamentally goodhearted.

Maybe my favourite part was the part when the Dwarves and Bilbo escaped from the Elves castle. It’s unexpected and thrilling.  Film evokes an ” I can’t wait the next part”-feeling. The movie ends with an exciting scene.

However, sometimes the movie isn’t easy ro follow.  There are so many character and places and all of them have so difficult names.

Still I loves the movie and I want to see final part of the trilogy.

Pulp Fiction

Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino (1994) is a thriller film. As we know this movie is the first big hit Tarantino produced.

The movie story takes place in L.A. and is about two killers or more specific hitmen (John Travolta-Vincent and Samuel Jackson-Jules) who are supposed to get back a suitcase that was stolen from Marsellus Wallace(Ving Rhames) a major kingpin who is working with a boxer who failed to throw a fight and now is planning to flee the city. These two hitmen are in running into a dew unexpected detours along the movie road. Vincent takes care of Wallace’s daughter (Mia-Uma Thurman).
Some of these people redeem themselves and some don’t and all meet an appropriate ending due to their choices.
Inside the movie we can find an amazing crew doing a great work on the character work, for example John Travolta and Samuel Jackson, they did complement themselves in an incredible way. Both of them have an amazing style and Uma Thruman is not that far from them. Going deeper to the characters we find that Vince (John Travolta) was a heroine yonki, he has traveled all around europe and he is a very loyal ”worker”. Then we have his bro, Jules (Samuel Jackson) he also works in the same gang as Vincent, Jules was a very important part of one of the best scenes in the movie, when he is reading the bible. And at the end we have the daughter of the kingpin Mia Wallace (Uma Thruman) cocaine and cigarette user, she also appears in one of the best scenes, when she inhales heroine instead of cocaine, after it an amazing adrenaline shot scene is done to save her life, she and Vincent are in love of each other.
The film contains a mix of American rock and roll, pop, soul and some similar music. The soundtrack consists of 9 songs from the movie and seven songs from the movie were not in the cd soundtrack of the movie, there is one remarkable song, Girl, you’ll be a woman soon, this song was one of the hottest at the moment (1994) and in my opinion the music type really connects with the movie topic.
In conclusion Pulp Fiction can be considered as a master piece because it was made with a ”low budget” and it was something really different from the normal movies at that time. In my opinion everyone must watch this movie.
