Summer in the City

Summer in the City is a novel written by Candace Bushnell. It was published in 2011. It’s a sequel to Candace Bushnell’s previous book ”The Carrie Diaries”. She has also written all the ”Sex and the city” books. There is also a TV series and two movies which are based to her books.

The book tells about 17-year-old girl named Carrie Bradshaw, who moves to New York for a summer, so she could go to a writing class. Everyone who has ever watched or read Sex and the City TV series or books, knows about Carries friends Samatha, Miranda and Charlotte. In this book you find out how they all met each other. Carrie experiences a lot of things and gets involved to many kind of situations. Everything starts from the situation when she gets in New York in the very first time and someone steals her bag and all the information about where she should be living for the next few months. All she has is a address of a woman called Samatha Jones, who is Carries schoolmates cousin and lives in New York. That’s how she met Samatha. They become friends and after Carrie gets kicked out from the place where she lives, she moves to Samathas place. Carrie meets Miranda, when Miranda founds Carries stolen bag and returns it to Carrie. Carrie doesn’t have many friends in New York yet so she asks Miranda for a coffee and that’s how their friendship starts. After being in New York for a while she meets a playwright, over 30-year-old Bernard Singer, and starts to date him. His lifestyle and scheme of things are quite different than Carries and that causes a little bit troubles. These and lot of other things happens to Carrie in this book, but those you will find out if you read the book yourself.

The narrator of the book is Carrie herself, so the things are described for her view. In the book are mentioned a lot of people, but the main characters are Carrie, Samatha, Miranda, Bernard, Carries dad and her sisters, Victor, who is the teacher of the writing class and Ryan, Capote and Lily, whom are Carries classmates.

I chose this book because I have read this in Finnish for a couple times already and I like it a lot and I thought that it would be nice to read this in English too. I have also read Candace Bushnells other books and I think that her books are awesome. The book was quite long but something was all the time happening in it so it wasn’t boring at all. Every time when I started to read it, it hooked me and I just couldn’t stop reading. And it’s a sign of a very good book.

James Bond: You Only Live Twice

James Bond: You only live twice is a novel written by a man, who was actually an agent himself,  Ian Fleming. It is the 11th James Bond book and was published in the year 1964.

Like all James Bond books, You only live twice represents the genre of spy fiction. It also seems to have quite a bit of action in it, but spy fiction is enough to tell the genre.

James Bond is an obvious main character of the story. You can tell that just by looking at the book cover. There are many characters that work with Bond or against him. The biggest of the side characters in Tiger Tanaka, a Japanese fellow who is with Bond right from the start of the book.

The English in the book is really fine and has some quite unique words that some might not know the meaning of, but it didn’t affect the reading of the book that much. For example:”James Bond wrestled with his chopsticks and slivers of raw octopus and a mound of rice and watched the jagged coastline, interspersed with glittering paddy-fields, flash by”. The story is told by an omniscient narrator, which seems fitting for the book. It’s nice to know all the Bond’s thoughts and to know some bits of the past too.

I really didn’t know what to expect from the book. It’s been a while since I saw the movie and I haven’t ever read a book in English before. But I really liked the book, the fancy words and the describing of places and the narration was spot-on. It was nice to read in English too. Like I mentioned I haven’t read an English book so I have nothing to compare it to, but for me it felt really nice. Maybe I should start reading more, and in English ofcourse

The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner

The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner is a fantasy novella by author Stephenie Meyer. The book is published in 2010. It tells about a newborn vampire, Bree Tanner, who also performs in the third book of Twilight, Eclipse. She is the narrator of the book, so it is written from the viewpoint of Bree. The novella follows her on the road to her death.

Bree was fifteen years old girl when she became a vampire. Riley found her living in the streets. He offered help and took her to his leader Victoria, who turned her into a vampire. Victoria was planning to create an army of newborn vampires to destroy Bella and the Cullens, who killed her lover. Bree and the other newborn vampires were living in a cave. They were told lies about vampires and they didn’t knew what Victoria was up to. Later Bree fell in love with Diego, an older vampire of the Riley’s vampire gang. Bree tried figure out Victoria’s true plans with Diego. Soon they realised that Victoria had been lying to them about everything. They decided to run away from the army with Bree’s other vampire friend, ’Freaky’ Fred, but Diego wanted to tell Riley that Victoria had been lying to him. He didn’t return from his meeting with Riley. Bree was told that Diego was joined in to their army. When the battle with The Cullens began Bree realised that Diego has probably been killed by Victoria and Riley. She surrendered to the Cullen’s, but in the end the Volturi destroyed her.

The main theme of this book is friendship. The characters have to solve who they can trust and who they can’t, who truly is their friend and who isn’t. Other themes is, for example, revenge and war.

I really like the Twilight, The Vampire Diaries and all the other vampire series but this book wasn’t that good. This was too confusing and not so interesting like the others. I expected a little bit more.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s stone

Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s stone was one of the first novels I read. The plot is so perfect that it gets also a little bit older readers hooked up. The book is touching, exciting, fun and for me it brings a lot of memories from my childhood.
Harry Potter and the Philosopher´s stone is the first novel in the Harry Potter series. The book serie includes in all seven books. Books are written by the British author J.K.Rowling. The idea of Harry Potter was born, when she once travelled by train. First Rowling wrotes the story about Harry for fun, but little by little the book was finished. Twelve publishers rejected the book before Bloomsbury Publishing interested in it. In the end the book was published. Today the Harry Potter – serie is one of the best-selling book series in history and it have been translated into over 70 languages.
One Harry Potter – book tells always about one year in Harry´s life. Harry is the main character of the book. His parents have magical powers and so he has too. He just don´t know it before he turns to eleven and gets a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy. In school he meets Ron and Hermione, his two best friends and experiences many incredible adwentures with them. Harry and his friends and classmates are learning elements of magic. Hogwarts School is huge and full of exciting things. Secrets are fulfilling the whole place. Harry, Ron and Hermione get into their life´s biggest adventure when they try to clear those up. In the end Harry meets the most dangerous dark wizard, called lord Voldemort, who killed his parent´s, when he was only a one-year old baby. Harry fights against Voldemort and delays his returning to the power. This is the main story of the book, but it includes several other plots and characters too.
Many of you have certainly read this book as a child. I sincerely recommened you to do it again. The reading experience is really very different. You can find a whole new story and the plot is opening to you in a brand new way.

The fault in our stars

The fault in our stars is the multi-million worldwide bestseller and that’s explain why so many of us (english students of course five), chose this book to read. Not only because the book is just 300 pages but because it is very intelligently and funnily written and I don’t know any girls who wouldn’t have even a little bit interested to the epic love story.  This epic love story is written by John Green who gave his first inspiration to write this book when he was working in the children’s hospital. Easter Earl, a girl who died at the age of 16 to thyroid cancer and was also Green’s friend, was one of those children who inspired Green to write this novel.

The book is published in January 2012 and it has also been made the film in June 2014, which is based on the book. I think the film raised the popularity of the book even more and I myself for example found the book after I had seen the movie.

The fault in our stars is the story about 16-year-old girl Hazel Grace Lancaster, who suffers from thyroid cancer. Her illness is incurable and her doctor recommend Hazel to go Cancer Kid Support Group. In support group Hazel meets a boy Augustus Waters, who is embodiment of the perfect boyfriend except that he has a cancer too. Young couple bring together a book named An Imperial Affliction, which tells truthfully about cancer and dying. However John Green’s book doesn’t bathe in misery on the contrary he manages to tell the story about cancer sarcastic funnily without being tasteless. You can also notice from the book it is based on real events because the author can describe the feelings of cancer patient so credibly. “I’m a grenade and at some point I’m going to blow up and I would like to minimize the casualties, okey?” says the main character at the desperate moment and in my opinion this is the good evidence about how well John Green knows what it feels like to be sick. I will not spoil you how the book will end but I recommend to prepare several of tissues.

Critics have praised the book all over the world and especially they have liked new perspective of cancer and romance. The fault in our stars is called melancholy, philosophical, intelligent and touching. The Time magazine is criticized the novel “damn near genius”. So decidedly this book is readable!

I think this novel describes perfectly the real life with a good days and also not so good days and after reading The Fault In Our Stars everyone can put the things order of importance in our life. At least I woke up after the book how happy I should be on my health. Because “the world is not a wish-granting factory” as the book several times mentioned.

The short second life of Bree Tanner

The short second life of Bree Tanner written by Stephenie Meyer tells about newborn vampire, Bree Tanner who lives in Seattle. Before Bree met Riley she was a young homeless girl but then Riley took her to Victoria. Victoria change her into vampire. Diego has been vampire for eleven months and now they have become friends with Bree and maybe even more. They live in a cave with other vampires and they wonder why Victoria has changed them into vampires. After a while they realize that she wants them to her army which fights against the Cullens so they start to practice. Riley told the other that Cullens want their land and kill them. The battle begins but Bree find out that Riley had lied about the Cullens. Bree is so upset and she is sure that Diego is dead because she doesn’t feel his existence. When Bree faces the Cullens she surrenders and explain that Riley had lied to everyone. Cullens could save her and teach the rules but the Volturi doesn’t accept it. The book ends when the Volturi kill her.

Bree Tanner is the protagonist and also the narrator of the story. She was almost 16 years old when she became a vampire. Diego was 18 years old when he became a vampire. He is Bree’s friend and he falls in love with her. Riley is the leader of the newborns. Victoria gives orders to Riley to create an army to her. Fred is Bree’s friend.

The book was okay. I don’t like that much vampire books but this was good one. I think that the theme would be revenge. The book has a surprise ending because I thought that Bree will be saved and she learn to live like Cullens. But the end was totally different than I imagined.

Pride and prejudice

I`ve read one of the most popular book by Jane Austen, Pride and prejudice. Then I thought I have to see some movie about book so I decided to watch in 2005 released movie.
The director is Joe Wright and the leading role is Keira Knight, who is played by Elizabeth Bennet, the second of five daughters of country gentleman. The Bennet`s family lives in Herforshire, near London and the whole village gets a little bit exited when new faces move in Herforshire. The one of the new gentleman is Mr. Darcy (Matthew Macfadyen), handsome, rich but pride and unpleasant man. Here begins maybe little cliché, but still delightful love story between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy.

My first impression was “awww, this was so cuty!”. In movie there was more connection between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth than in book. But yes, the book was published the first time in 1813, so I guess that kind of connection, what we in present day keep normal, would be too brave. Also the book was sometimes a bit unclear so the movie helped explain the plot.
But I think the book was still better, because there was more different plot twists. The movie touched just skin in the plot and let “did that just end?”- feel. When I read the book the excitement was whole time in attendance and stayed many days. But like I said earlier the movie was also good with own good sides.

But what was my favorite thing in the movie? The director didn`t chance too much the original plot! It`s always blessing to the readers when the directors don’t make too much own things to the plot. We have too much examples when a movie has just name of the book but nothing else. So if you want sophisticate yourself without reading the book, I recommend this movie. You will get some kind of opinion what was “Pride and prejudice”.

Antonio Proximo (played by Oliver Reed) is an old gladiator and buys and trains slaves to become famous gladiators. Antonio buys Maximus and he is forced to fight in gladiator arenas. Maximus only desire is revenge and he fights his way to bigger arenas to face the new Emperor, Commodus…

Gladiator is epic historical drama film. Movies soundtrack is made by Hans Zimmer and its amazing. Characters in this movie are the best I have ever seen. Every character is believable. Special effects in this movie was big step ahead. All the sword fights and arenas looked realistic. One of the cast members, Oliver Reed died during the filming so he was made with computers in last the scenes. Also this is the best movie I have personally ever seen.

The Holiday

The Holiday (2006) is a American Christmas-themed romantic comedy film written, produced and directed by Nancy Meyers. It’s a story about Amanda Woods (Cameron Diaz) and Iris Simpkins (Kate Winslet), two women who temporarily exchange their homes to escape heartbreak during the holiday season. Iris was in love with her boss for many years but now when she hears that he’s engaged to another women she thinks that she must get away for awhile. Amanda just broke up with her boyfriend Ethan who was cheating her with his secretary, and she wanted also get out from her own life over holidays. So she contacted Iris and they decided to swap homes for two weeks. Iris ends up to Amanda’s Los Angeles home which is huge, beautiful and expensive, while Amanda ends up to Iris’s lovely, little cottage in Surrey, UK. Amanda gets bored after just few hours arriving there and books a flight to home for the next day. Later that night Iris’s brother Graham comes to there without knowing that Iris isn’t home and somehow Amanda and Graham end up sleeping together. Meanwhile Iris is enjoying Amanda’s house and she meets Amanda’s friend Miles and they starts to spend some time together. She also meets Arthur Abbott, the old men who’s standing lost at the corner and Iris helped him home. Iris finds out that Arthur was a screenwriter back in old days and they become fast friends. I could tell you a lot more about this movie but if i would, it wouldn’t be so great to watch that after you would already know everything that happens in this movie..

I have seen this movie for many times already and I think that it’s every time as good as it was at the first time. This is that kind of movie that I have to see every Christmas holiday. It’s just every years tradition. The cast in this movie is great! So many good actresses in one movie. And the story line is good too. I especially like the parts in the movie where Iris and Miles are playing music and the parts where they show the place where Iris lives in Surrey, it just looks amazing. I just really love this movie and I recommend this movie to everyone, you have to watch this at least once in your lifetime.

Never Back Down

Never Back Down, also know as The Fighters, is a action movie released  in 2008. This movie was directed by Jeff Wadlow and it was written by Chris Hauty. The main actor in this movie was Sean Faris as Jake Tyler. The movie hasn’t been a big hit around the world since it has mostly met only negative reviews. Still the movie made over 60 million dollars around the world (40 million in theaters ) against a budget of 20 million dollars.

The movie starts with a scene where Jake is having a football match and someone in the opposite team says something rude about his father who died in a drunk driving accident. Jake gets really mad and attacks this guy instantly. After these events Jake has to move to a different city. Attempting to fit in, at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Jake goes to a party where he is unwillingly pulled into a fight with the fighting MMA champion at the school, Ryan McCarthy. Originally, Jake does not wish to fight until Ryan taunts him about his father. First Jake doesn’t want to be any kind of a fighter or anything else like that, but after he realizes that his whole family could be in a danger because he being involved in some fighting stuff. Jake starts intense training with his new master Jean Roqua. Jake knows that he has to beat Ryan before he really hurts his family or friends.

I have watched this movie like million times and i still enjoy watching it. At first this movie seemed like it was just guys beating other guys over and over again, but after when i watched this movie for like the second time o realized it was not just fighting, not at all. The movie of course includes a lot of fighting but that how this Jake feels about fighting is incredible. In the movie there is this ’Beatdown’ event where Jake tries to beat Ryan. This Ryan gets disqualified and when Jake hears about this he immediately walks away from the event because all he cares about is to fight Ryan, nothing else. This movie is entirely very well made and the actors are really good and i just really like it.
