Movie review: Generation Iron

In this article I’ll be reviewing the film ”Generation iron”. It was released in 2013, and directed by Vlad Yudin. The movie gives a peek inside the lives of professional bodybuilders, as they prepare for the biggest competition of the year. The movie is starred by the top bodybuilders in the world: Phil Heath, Kai Greene, Dennis Wolf, Branch Warren and a few others. Also special appearances are made by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ronnie Coleman and Lou Ferrigno. I decided to review this particular film because I like it, and through my personal interest in the sport, it was easier for me to review.

Because the film is a documentary, there is really no ”acting” involved. It is basically just following the daily lives of the top athletes, competing in the hardest of sport. The movie is pretty much a modern day-version of the film ”Pumping Iron” (1977), where the story was excatly the same, but the training methods and -most importantly- physiques were different. In my humble opinion, the older movie was better, because of the pure hard work and aesthetic physiques, whereas the stars in ”Generation iron” are like bloated balloon animals.

The movie jumps off with the smaller competitions, where the competitors have qualify themselves for the biggest one (Mr. Olympia). And in between the competition footage there are many interviews and training clips. For someone new to the sport, this movie will probably change your perspective quite a bit.

The bodybuilders also address the subject of steroids. They seem rather irritated, because people seem to just brush off their achievements by saying ”-Well he is on steroids”. But what they don’t see, are the bodybuilders early mornings, 2-3 workouts a day and stuffing plain chicken and rice in their faces six times a day.

The movie finishes with the Mr. Olympia competition, and it is won by Phil Heath. I would recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in bodybuilding.

The Hobbit there and back again

Hobbit there and back again is movie series based on novel written by  J.R.R Tolkien. Book was published on 21 september 1937. Hobbit movies are directed by Peter Jackson. Screenplay was written by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Guillermo Del Toro. They done three movies An Unexpected journey,The Desolation of Smaug and The Battle of the five armies. Films tell you what happend sixty years before Lord of the rings.
Filming started 2011 and ended 2013 in New Zealand where Jackson filmed Lord of the rings trilogy.
First movie An Unexpected journey began with a dinner of 13 dwarves one wizard Gandalf and Bilbo Baggins. That was company of Thorin Oakenshield. Names of the other were Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Ori, Nori , Dori, Oin , Gloin, Fili and Kili who were twins. Their purpose were to cather a company and reclaim their homeland of Erebor which is also called as a lonely mountain. Erebor was captured by dragon Smaug. The Most important actors of a company was Martin freeman (Bilbo) Ian Mckellen (Gandalf) and Richard Armitage (Thorin).
In the first part of trilogy the company gets themselves to a many serious problems. They got chased by orc group right after they came out from troll hole, but the company managed to escape because other wizard Radagast the brown helped them. Company ran to hidden valley of Rivendell witch inhabitants are elves whose leader are Elrond. When they Reached the Rivendell Elrond was not there ,but they found out that he and his soldiers just killed all the orcs that were hunting Thorin and his people. Elronds role in the movie is pretty small but important ,because he were one of few people who could read Thorins map that Gandalf had given to him. When they left from  Elronds house the company went to the misty mountains where they got caught by goblins because there were great thunder storm because of that they had to find place to stay over night ,but they accidentally went sleep to a goblins ”frontdoor”.Goblins took them to Goblin chief. Goblin chief  recognizes Thorin and send word to the Azog who is old enemy of Thorin. Thorin cut Azogs hand in ancient battle of moria. When orcs  decided to kill the company Gandalf came from nowhere and saved their lives.   While ago Bilbo lost the  company and ended up to a gollums gave. Gollum is strange creature and had lived in a mountains long time. Bilbo and Gollum sayd riddles to each other. Bilbo won the competition  by asking from Gollum ”what do i have in my pocket” and  Gollum gets mad he thinks that its unfair question. Gollumd had promised to show  Bilbo way out from mountains but he betrayed him , because he had lost his ring  which was founded by Bilbo earlier before they had met. Ring was powerful ring that made its carrier invisible. Bilbo put it in his finger and walked out from there. At the same time other were fought their way out from the misty mountains. The last scene of the movie was that Azog found Thorin but they climped to the trees their enemies tried to force the trees down and they succeed but at the last second eagles attacked and saved the company. I like this first movie pretty much. Screenplay follows the book pretty well and there is most important main events. In my opinion the succeeded with special effects especially stone giants in misty mountains and trolls turning to stone. New  Zealand is a great place to film this movies because it is so showy country.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                         Second part of the trilogy ”Desolation of Smaug” Started when company were escaping the seeking orcs but they noticed an other problem who is not enemy or friend. He is called Beorn acted by Swedish actor Mikael Persbrandt who has came famous from Swedish Beck -series and his less wanted drug problem. He is skin changer which means, that sometimes he is a great strong man and sometimes huge black bear. After all company managed to escape to Beorns house even though he tried to catch them.  when he is bear he is wild but the human form is friendly. Next they ahead their way to the Mirkwood where the wood elves live.  Beorn gave them a ponies because if they would have to go on foot orcs could easily catch them. When the company  reached the Mirkwood Gandalf left them. Gandalf was asked to go to high fells of Rhudaur  because the necromancer (Benedict Cumberpatch) seemed to something else what he pretended to be. At Same time Bilbo and his fellows tried to walk through to forrest but giants spider captured them but missfortunately elves captured them when they managed to escape from spiders. Elf who captured them was Legolas  Greenleaf whose actor is Orlando bloom who is also knew from acting in lord of the rings and Pirates of the Caribbean. He took them to his city where elvish king lives. Dwarves eneded up to prison ,but Bilbo succeed to get them free because he did not get caught. They escaped by going down to river but it almost failed because or ambushed them. the elves came and slayed down many orcs  and orcs decided to escape. Dwarves hired ferryman to smuggle them to the lake town where they could get weapons and other supplies. They spend couples days there and then they went to the mountain. When they managed to go in the mountain first Bilbo tried to find the Arkenstone without success. His only success was that he woke up the dragon and barely managed to stay alive. They tried to kill a Dragon but they failed it and dragon came up with an idea to destroy lake town and that is where the movie ends. In my opinion this second part is better than first. Both movies where edited very good.  I recommend these movies to everyone.

Inferno by Dan Brown

Inferno is a novel released on Mai 14, 2013, written by the US-American author Dan Brown. The thriller is the forth book in the Robert Langdon series. It follows the international bestsellers Angels and Demons, The Da Vinci Code and The Lost Symbol.

The main characters are Robert Langdon, the doctor Sienna Brooks, a man just named “the provost” and the WHO-general director Elisabeth Kingsley.

The main part of the novel is set in Florence, Italy, where the Harvard University professor Robert Langdon wakes up in a hospital without any memory of the last two days, suffering from a head shot wound. As a women tries to kill him he and Sienna escape and tare trying to find out the reason for people obviously chasing Langdon. On their research, they find a strange object attached to Roberts belongings a map of hell based on Dantes novel “Inferno”, which leads them into the deep world of old florence and Dante, always chased by the authorities. As they find out the connection between Dante, “Inferno” and Bertrand Zobrist, a billionaire geneticist, they find out about a possible plague which is supposed to kill a big amount of the world’s population. Their research takes them, with the help of a strange assistant of Elisabeth Kingsley’s, further to Venice, where Robert and Sienna get separated as Robert get caught and Sienna escapes. Now, in the hands of their chasers, the hears the truth about the pursuit and Sienna, who was the love of the plagues creator Zobrist, dying from suicide a week ago in Florence. Now they have to fear that Sienna finds the plague earlier then they and helps to release the plague. The search goes on in Istanbul, Turkey, because Langdon’s first guess, Venice, was wrong. In a video, that Zobrist created short before his death, he specified the date of the release as the following day and gives the final clue to the location, the Hagia Sophia. There, they have to witness, that the bag, where the plague was held, is already broken and the plague released.
It discovers that Sienna didn’t brooke the bag, she even tried to stop the virus, but it was too late. She just didn’t want to cooperate with the WHO because she fears that some governments will use the information as a weapon. She also informs about the type of the virus, which changed the human race forever.
The main point of the book is by no mains gripped from pure air, as it is the world’s overpopulation and how the human race will go down on itself and also, how powerless and ignorant we are stopping it.
(“The human mind has a primitive ego defince mechanism that negates all realities that produce too much stress for the brain to handle. It’s called denial.”- Dan Brown, Inferno)
One other point is the danger of human ambition to improve ourselves mire and more not seeing what dangers for our society that would bring.

My point of view is that this book was truly amazing to read. It was like a blockbuster, just in a written form. Though it’s difficult to read, it was really exciting. I must admit that I read it twice to understand the entire plot and the connections and the second time, because not that much time passed, it got a bit boring but for my understanding it was worth it. The plot seemed to be based on a good research and true facts. That is one thing I truly admire Dan Brown for, because no matter how far from reality the story might be, the base has always something of historical facts in it. So if you’re interested in history, I can thoroughly recommend “Inferno” or any of the other Dan Brown novels.
So don’t hesitate and read the book and form yourself an opinion of this great book, because donÄt forget:
“There comes a moment in history when ignorance is no longer a forgivable offence….a moment when only wisdom has the power to absolve”

-Dan Brown, Inferno

Divergent

Divergent, written by Veronica Roth, is the first part of the dystopian novel trilogy. To summarize the plot, the world has been destroyed and splitted into factions: selfless Abgenation, harmonous Amity, intelligent Erudite, honest Candor and fearless Dauntless. The heroine of the book, Beatrice, has to decide the faction, where she will spend the rest of her life. Then Beatrice has to prove her choice right; that she is capable to adapt the faction she has chosen.

Divergent is the story of the main character’s growth. Beatrice has to leave her Abgenation family (mentally and physically) and start a new life in Dauntless. The theme of the novel is her act of becoming independent and brave. She will go through the iniation process and she has to prove that she is brave enought for her new family.

Initiates who doesn’t integrate their new factions, are discarded from the whole community. That might symbolize our pressure of uniformity in society. The book criticizes the fact that being abnormal is sometimes considered even dangerous. In the story the main character Beatrice is told to be divergent (she has features of three factions instead of only one). She has to hide her divergency if she wants to stay alive.

To be honest, the faction system of the novel is a bit naive. The fact that divergents are so unique and dangerous sound hilarious to me. Obviously, the reader should identify Beatrice and find divergence normal, but I regarded that she was so normal that it was almost boring. How could that be so dangerous that she should be killed?

The most of the other characters of the book weren’t such touching either. Their personalities felt distant and unclear. Maybe there were too many characters to identify them. Beatrices mother, though, was interensting character: too bad, that she was killed too soon to be known better.

The main character, Beatrice learns to criticize the corrupted leaders of Dauntless: is it really brave to be violent and reckless? She understands that sometimes acting selflessly is bravery. Sometimes it is braver to sacrifice your own reputation to save someone.

Even though the motto of the faction system is ”faction before blood”, one of the important themes of the novel is that we have major need for our family and friends. Despite Beatrice has left her Abgenation family physically, she can trust them when life gets rough in her new faction. Friends are important for her too.

Divergent has been compared with other dystopian novels, for example The Hunger Games, that I have also read (http://www.risingshadow.fi/artikkelit/kirja-arvostelut/551-arvostelu-veronica-roth-outolintu). I have to agree, that there were some similarities in the stories. For instance, they both have female main characters who have to grow as a person and save the corrupted and splitted world.

Of course, like other novels of dystopian genre, Divergent also has a romance. Beatrice falls in love with the initation instructor, Four. Their relationship symbolizes forbidden love: Four is important leader person for Dauntless faction and Beatrice is just young and weak initiate from Abgenation. Fortunately there wasn’t a love triangle (regular in dystopian novels) in this book though.

The language of the novel is easy to follow and fluent. The book was easily read and even though it wasn’t the best novel I have read, I probably will read the sequels of the book.

Movie review: It’s a Wonderful Life

The 1946 movie directed by the legendary Frank Capra and starring James Stewart and Donna Reed is a holiday classic whose popularity has continued throughout the decades. It tells the story of a kindhearted, hardworking man named George Bailey, who one Christmas Eve contemplates taking his life after having encountered numerous difficulties that could potentially put his friends and loved ones at risk. He is prevented, however by his guardian angel Clarence, who, after hearing George’s wish that he would never have been born, shows him what the world would really be like if he had his wish- making George realize just of how much importance he is to others and how they want to repay him for all the good he has done them.
The movie is as thought-provoking as it is heartwarming, with a charming and humorous storyline. The overall feel of the movie is lighthearted and hopeful, and it reminds us of something we often tend to forget: the fact that each one of us is special and important and that we have been born for a purpose.
Not only is the story good, but the excecution and portayal of it further amp the overall quality of the production. The actors are believable in their roles, the milieu is fitting, and the attire and grooming are tasteful and authentic. The cons would be the fact that some of the events and scenes are a bit erratic and scattered, which is the result of going very briefly over some longer periods of time in the story. I do not not see it, however, as being any major fault, it is in fact even necessary for the sake of the storyline.
All in all I would say that ”It’s a Wonderful Life” is a very good movie that I would recommend to anyone. It is a remarkable film to enjoy with the family during the holidays, and it definately adds something special to your Christmas!
