American Psycho

American Psycho is a novel written by Bret Easton Ellis. It’s about a successful 20-something old man named Patrick Bateman who’s telling about his life in first person. His life is typical upstart life, despite the fact sometimes he kills people in the most imaginative ways.

The narration is very detailed. When Patrick goes out to rent a movie, the scene might last for ten pages. Not to mention the murder scenes, they are really vivid and every single detail is told. Most of the time this is only a good thing, but at times it gets really boring. Nevertheless, the detailed narration suits this book very well.

American Psycho is very violent so it’s not suitable for everyone. It has had much criticism towards it and its sales have even been restricted in many countries.

I liked the book, but I have to say I expected more from it. I’ve heard so much good about I thought it would be great, but it was only good. I found the book a bit difficult to read, there were too much sentences that felt never-ending and the language was not too vibrant. There were some excellent parts in book, but way too much just-average parts.

Being a fan of gore and splatter movies I thought the killing scenes were the best stuff this book had to offer to me. I also liked the fact the reader can’t be sure if Patrick actually kills people or is he just fantasizing about it, or is he crazy and imagining the whole thing. I also liked how the book narrated the dark side of business-life in the 80’s.
