Full Stop

I choose as my short story Full Stop, because the beginning seemed weird without punctuation marks, and then I realized that the story consists of letters, which was interesting.

The main character is Carmen. She writes letters to her grandma and very often sends money to her (she uses the money to something very other than it’s ment to). Grandma always writes back, without punctuation, and is always thanking God about everything. Grandma had raised Carmen, and her real mom tries to correspondence with her. Carmen’s mom had got sick, and she wants to go to surgery in Carmen’s homecity. One day mom appears to her place, and tells Carmen a very different version of Carmen’s childhood, than she had heard from her grandma.

Grandma’s reaction to Carmen’s first letter is rather provident and. She is also a bit stingy, because even if she’s quite old, she wants to paint the house herself. I would also say that she really is a good christian. In her nine letters, she mentioned God for at least 18 times. That’s a lot that.

Carmen’s mom’s and grandma’s  versions of her childhood were different. I somehow believe more grandma’s version, because she has taken care of her granddaughter for the whole Carmen’s life. On the other hand, grandma said her own daughter as a snake. That doesn’t sound as a good christian’s talk.  After all, it really is very hard to trie to say which one is telling the truth. In the last letter grandma says that she will put up the burglar bars which she had resisted at first. Maby it’s just that when the thieves had gone to a house of someone she had known, she really understood the situation. That they are able to go in her house, and rob it.

Carmen’s brother, Richie, doesn’t keep in touch with grandma. In the letters Carmen and grandma didn’t talk about Richie very much. But I still do think, that Richie’s reason for not keeping touch with grandma could be that he is more in connection with his mom. Maby he just believes another person than her sister does.

This short story was nice and a bit funny too. Sometimes the letters were hard to read without commas and other marks. I liked it very much and recommend it to others too!

Stand by Me (1986)

I choose the movie, Stand by me, because it’s definitely one of my favourite movies. It also isn’t that recent. The movie came out in 1986 and it is based on Stephen King’s novel; the Body.

The movie begins from the year 1986. Gordie Lanchance has just heard, that his childhood friend, Chris, has died. He starts remembering his youth, how he and three of his friends, Chris, Teddy and Vern, left their small hometown to go looking for a body, and become local heroes. Also a gang of older  boys had planned of discovering the body. Young , twelve-year-old boys decided to go and find the body on foot, even if the distance was dozens of kilometers. On the way happens many risky things and they experience all the moments of joy and sorrow. Boys find the body, but so does the gang of older boys. Then, with a gun that Chris had brought, Gordy frightens the gang away. Boys decide to make an anonymous phonecall to the authorities. They go back home, and say goodbye to each other. It was their last summer together.

Characters are really significant in this movie. It doesn’t have any miraculous special effects, so it’s all about them. As a group of friends, Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern are brilliant.                                                                                                                                 Gordie, the storyteller, is very clever, but also rather shy. He is very much afraid, that his parents don’t  care about him, because his older brother, who was very well-thought-of, died a while ago.                                                                                                                       Chris is a very peaceful person, though missunderstood. He comes from a family that has a criminal backgroud. Chris tries to seem as a tough person outwars, but in reality, he likes school and wants to succeed there.                                                                                 Teddy is the real adventurer of the group. His father has ended up to a mental hospital, and Teddy can’t stand if someone insults his father.                                                                Vern is a bit coward, and maby the most naive (thouhg they are only twelve). He would always want to choose the safest route and he says wrong things at the wrong time.     Ace is the gang leader, ”the bad guy”, who never thinks about anyone else than himself.

On my opinion, actors in the movie are very appropriate to their roles. It’s a pity, that some of the actors haven’t succeed very well after Stand by Me. Kiefer Sutherland (Ace’s actor) is surely the most famous nowadays. Another noted actor is Corey Feldman (Teddy), who has acted for example at the Lost Boys. River Phoenix (Chris) died in 1993 of an overdose of drugs. Before his death he had time to act in movies like Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and My Own Private Idaho. Wil Wheaton (Gordie’s actor) has been in Big Bang Theory’s seasons from 3 to 5. Jerry O’Connell (Vern’s actor) has been acting in movies like Scream 2 and Kangaroo Jack.

The movie’s soundtrack is light-hearted and it has many well-known 50’s tracks. They’re not maby known by name, but when you hear it, you’ll recognize it (for example;Buddy Holly: Everyday, The Chordettes: Lollipop and Ben E. King: Stand by Me).

By thinking, that this movie is based on Stephen King’s novel, you might think it is some kind of a thriller. Despite King’s name, it’s a drama, that tells about friendship and a big adventure.
