Summer wars (originally サマーウォーズ) is animated movie directed by Mamoru Hosoda and scripted by Satoko Okudera. Summer wars, putting it simply, is about saving the real world from Love Machine, avatar who took over the virtual world OZ. This Love Machine is controlled by no one. It learns itself and likes to play games.
I like it how every character is important to this movie. Even though there is so many of them. Main character is Kenji Koiso, a match genius. He receives an e-mail with a mathematical code and cracks it. Love machine steals his account and avatar from him and attacks with it, causing widespread damage in OZ and lot of troubles in real world. My favourite character is Kazuma Ikezawa and of course his avatar King Kazma.
He is 13-year-old boy who uses all his time to train his avatar in OZ. Second favourite character is Wabisuke Jinnouchi, a cool and sardonic 41-year-old computer expert who created Love Machine (I also like this avatar very much, poor thing) and sold it to USA.
There are a lot of soundtracks in this movie, but my favourite is King Kazma’s OST (07). I don’t know why, maybe just because it reminds me of King Kazma and it’s used in the best parts of the movie.
The main reason why I choose this film was because I adore its animation. Red lines and simply colouring is just beautiful and really well done, I really like it. Summer wars is animated by Madhouse. I adore Mamoru Hosoda who is a Japanese film director and animator. First films he got public attention was two films in the Digimon Adventure and 6th movie in the One Piece series. And not to mention The Girl Who Leapt through Time. Studio Ghibli also commissioned Hosoda to direct Howl’s Moving Castle, but he left the project during the early production stages.
It’s en excellent movie, too bad I’ve only seen it once in japanese without any subtitles at all. Nevertheless I enjoyed it a lot since the beautiful animation alone is enough to entertain you until the end of the movie! I’ve seen a couple of other works by the same animator and adore his works as well ( especially all the fight scenes ), and that’s probably the main reason why I loved the movie so much.
