A Shocking Accident

A Shocking Accident is a short story written by Graham Greene. The story tells about a boy Jerome whose father gets hit by a pig and dies. Jerome is quite young when this happens. Jerome’s housemaster Mr. Wordsworth tells him the news. After telling the to Jerome Mr. Wordsworth quickly goes to the window and turns his back on Jerome. Jerome doesn’t know the reason for this. I have a feeling that his was going to start to laugh and tried to hide it. Telling about Jerome’s father’s death was hard to Jerome. People used to be amused when he tried to tell the story. He had two ways to tell the story:  keep the story short or try to make an interesting story really boring.

Jerome doesn’t really know much about his father. Nevertheless he worshipped him. His father used to travel a lot and didn’t spend much time home. Jerome thought his father was a member of the British Secret Service. When growing up Jerome realized he was not. Jerome still respected his father.

Good night everyone !

Jerome grows up, meets and nice girl called Sally and gets engaged, and lives a normal life. He hasn’t told the story of the death of his father to Sally because he is afraid how Sally would react. Jerome doesn’t also want Sally to meet his aunt, with whom Jerome lived after the death of his father. When Sally finally meets the aunt and the aunt tells the story to Sally, Sally reacts exactly the way Jerome wanted: She was horrified and didn’t laugh. Also Sally’s question ”What happened to the pig” made Jerome happy because it was the same one Jerome asked when he heard the way his father died. And what happened to the big ? The story doesn’t tell. I have a feeling it got eaten with good wine and cheese.
