Why, Honey?

I read short story ”Why Honey” which is written by Raymond Carver. The whole story is a letter from worried mom, a letter in which she describes her whole life with strangely behaving and lying teenager boy. Receiver of the letter is unknown man, who has written first for this mother. The letter starts out, Dear Sir, and ends with, how did you find me?

The mother goes on to explain what a liar her son was, and that growing up he lied almost constantly. There is no father figure in this story. The son was first a normal boy who always got good grades. But when he turned fifteen he started to lie in every case. His mother just cant understand why her son lies to her in topics like how much he earned money in work. because of plenty of son’s lies, little by little her mother seems to assume that whatever her son is doing, is something criminal. when her son buys a hunting knife and shooting gun, her doubts was confirmed. She also finds a bloody shirt from her son’s car. Son didn’t want that his mother is always spying him, so he moved away.

In the letter, when the son had left, the mother describes how she read all the things about his son in the papers: how he take part to the marines, married a girl, got himself into politics, and was elected as a governor. The mother didn’t ever seen her son after he went away.

In the end of letter the mother describes how she is afraiding all the time and how she moved away and changed her address and got a secret phonenumber. In my opinion the mother was much too suspicious of everything. The son haven’t done anything what can be proved, and it was mother’s own fault that her son left her. But I think that one unknown man who first wrote to the mother and to whom mother is now writing, is her son.
